To ask if you drink in pints or halves?

If you drink beer / cider / lager etc, do you drink in pints or by the half pint?

I know that historically 'ladies' were frowned upon for drinking a pint.

Now times are moving on is it more acceptable to drink a pint, do you and what are your views generally?

Mine is that if I want a pint I will have one. Saves going to the bar twice. But at the same time I don't want to be judged by others for it.

Whichever I feel like at the time. Usually a pint.

CornishGem1975 · 25/11/2021 17:01

The only thing I've ever had a pint of is water.

PumpkinPie2016 · 25/11/2021 17:01

Personally, I would never drink from a pint glass in a pub - I was always told that a lady doesn't drink pints and for some odd reason, it has stuck Grin

I don't judge other women who do though - It doesn't matter to me.

coogee · 25/11/2021 17:05

im a half drinker, DH drinks fast than me so i have half to his every one

My husband is too but I just get another drink when I want one, not when he finishes his.

Oneofthosedreadfulparents · 25/11/2021 17:07

Pints if the beer's pretty standard, halves if there's plenty of interesting options.

Neither of those decisions based on anyone else's opinion of me.

TheOriginalEmu · 25/11/2021 17:08

I’ve always drunk pints. It’s cheaper and less trips to the bar.

yougottasmilesobright · 25/11/2021 17:17

Always pints

drunkensailorette · 25/11/2021 17:20

Depends how thirsty I am and how long I'm staying out. I'm not a very good drinker!

If we've been for a walk and are just stopping for one, I'll have a pint. If we are staying out for a few I'll have halves (DH will drink one pint to my half) I could have pints and make them last but they can start to go warm and flat if you hang on to them for too long.

OneTC · 25/11/2021 17:26

My first pub job in the 90s and we were taught to serve men in standard pint and half pint glasses and women got stemmed versions.

I never used to bother with the stemmed glasses unless requested and occasionally people did complain that they didn't get what they expected

Bimblybomeyelash · 25/11/2021 17:27

Now times are moving on

It’s 2021! I’ve been drinking pints for more than twenty years, and I certainly didn’t feel
like a trailblazer!

MarmitesMyMate · 25/11/2021 17:33

Pints.. I don't care what anyone thinks either

Iliketeaagain · 25/11/2021 17:33

@Amberflames

When I worked in a pub in the 90s there were plenty of men who would always stress if they were ordering a half that it was for “the Mrs”. This was often done by requesting the half in a “ladies glass”.
My DH thinks it's hilarious to do this... he's not British and thought it was funny when he saw it on east Enders once. If I ask if he has any cash if I don't and need it for something, he also thinks it's funny to say "buy yourself something nice darling" like Phil Mitchell.

Eastenders isn't allowed in my house any more Grin

But back to the question, if I'm having beer or cider, it's always a pint.

GrandTheftWalrus · 25/11/2021 18:01

I've always drank pints. Love a pint.

When me and the ex used to go out he would drink vodka and coke and I'd have a pint. 90% of the time the vodka would be handed to me and the pint to him.

WildRosie · 25/11/2021 18:24

I think we can all drink whatever we like, wherever we like. Pint, half, wine glass, flower vase. Anything. Man or woman. These are some of my pint glasses.

To ask if you drink in pints or halves?
WildRosie · 25/11/2021 18:31

This thread reminds me. I mentioned on here a while back a restaurant that would ONLY serve draught beer in half-pints to women and men. Laughable nonsense.

Usernameisgone · 25/11/2021 18:34

I drink pints. I like them!
My exH used to refuse to buy pints and would only let me drink Half's because pints were unladylike!!
My current partner happily buys me a pint and him bottles 🤣

ImInStealthMode · 25/11/2021 18:38

Always pints, but until relatively recently I'd get a raised eyebrow if ordering one in my parents local (small town Northern) pub where the majority of ladies still drink halves.

MushroomHunter · 25/11/2021 18:40

My go to is a pint of Guinness… not one person on this plant could stop me from consuming it as my first drink at a restaurant or a night out!

OhGiveUp · 25/11/2021 18:40

I drink halves, but only because I'm so slow at drinking them that a pint would go flat and warm due to me taking so long.
I have been known to have the same half sat in front of me at the end of the night that I started it with.
Many years ago, I was really thirsty on entering a pub and I asked DH for a pint then downed it in one. He was so shocked that he just stood staring speechless.
He's never let me forget ' the time you downed a pint in one ' 😂
I don't judge anyone on their choice of glass, you could drink from a gallon bucket for all I care.

Scbchl · 25/11/2021 18:42

I only really drink pints of cider and blackcurrant and really only at festivals and music concerts and yes I'd drink the pint.

tttigress · 25/11/2021 18:43

It was pretty standard on the 90s for women to drink pints

Heartdogs · 25/11/2021 18:44

Always pints, for nearly 30 years.

Level75 · 25/11/2021 18:47

I remember ordering a pint and a half in an old man's pub. The half came in one of those 'ladies' glasses with a stem. The bartender looked freaked out when I drank the pint and DH had the half. He actually apologised to DH for the glass. This must have been 15 years ago - hopefully things have changed.

Snowisfallinghere · 25/11/2021 18:50

I find it difficult to drink a pint of anything - whether it's water, soft drinks, beer... It's just such a lot of liquid. I can feel it all sloshing around in my belly. I certainly couldn't manage more than one pint of anything unless it's really spread out and I'm eating lots of salty food in between. I can drink several smaller glasses of alcohol but not pints of anything. It's not to do with being ladylike or not, it's about what I can actually manage comfortably.

TBH women are, in general, smaller than men, so it makes sense that women might order smaller drinks on average, compared to men. We also tend to need fewer calories and eat smaller portions. (I'm NOT saying all women do, or should, eat smaller portions and order smaller drinks, just that it makes sense if they do on average).

JudgeJ · 25/11/2021 18:55

I know that historically 'ladies' were frowned upon for drinking a pint.

Oh, memories of college in the late '60s, one pub wouldn't serve ladies with pints but would happily serve you with two halves at the same time! Another pub, more enlightened, would happily serve you with a pint but only in a straight sided glass, not a handled glass. Happy days!
At my brother's shot-gun wedding I got the dirtiest looks from his prospective MIL because I took a pint of bitter to the table, talk about sucking a lemon.
