To ask if you drink in pints or halves?

If you drink beer / cider / lager etc, do you drink in pints or by the half pint?

I know that historically 'ladies' were frowned upon for drinking a pint.

Now times are moving on is it more acceptable to drink a pint, do you and what are your views generally?

Mine is that if I want a pint I will have one. Saves going to the bar twice. But at the same time I don't want to be judged by others for it.

I've been drinking pints since I started drinking in pubs underage in the 1990s.

I've gone to beer festivals were you can have different measures so you can taste the beer, cider and perry. I only like the former.

StormyCornishSeas · 25/11/2021 14:18

Normally halves. I'm a slow drinker but like a cold drink.

SpangoDweller · 25/11/2021 14:18

Pints, always.

Youdoyoutoday · 25/11/2021 14:20

Why do you think people care? Are the village elders going to banish you? Confused

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 25/11/2021 14:21

Bottles. Halfs are too small but I often have to use 2 hands for a pint glass as my hands are really small.

ThereAintNoSanityClause · 25/11/2021 14:48

Usually halves although I feel slightly wimpish, but a pint seems an awful lot of cold liquid in winter.
If it’s hot then a pint.
I drank pints as a student in the eighties so it’s nothing new.

Ariela · 25/11/2021 15:18

Halves: I'm driving.
Pints: I'm walking (pub down the road)

PositiveLife · 25/11/2021 15:23

Usually pints. Maybe half if I'm driving. Very occasionally I'll have halves if there's a few beers I want to try (rare these days as selection tends to be far more limited in the pubs I go to)

aradicalnotion · 25/11/2021 15:27

My dad rolled his eyes (but I think was secretly proud, which is just as odd really Grin) when I started drinking pints. However that was in 1990.

I still always drink pints. Sometimes I even order bitter and sometimes I'm even wearing trousers when I do it.

I'm astonished this would still be an issue worthy of comment for anyone.

Orangesox · 25/11/2021 15:30

Pints but it’s usually bitter shandy or Pepsi Max because I take a large amount of meds, and I’m always the designated driver Grin

StrawberrySanta · 25/11/2021 15:40

Must be a generational thing as my mum wouldn't dream of having a pint of cider and black, she would only get a half. If for some reason she ended up with a pint by mistake she'd likely ask for a half pint glass to pour some out 😂

merryhouse · 25/11/2021 16:05

Pints. I'm 52. I also have large hands (can play a tenth on the piano). MiL has small hands and prefers smaller glasses - or ones with a stem. (MiL is doing pretty well standing at the bar, tbh - where/when she was growing up Women Didn't Go Into Pubs.)

Quite often H & I would order two pints of the same thing, and be given one in a straight glass and one in a curved. H likes the curved one so he'd always pick up "the ladies' glass" Grin

One of my friends started work in a Traditional Company in the nineties, and her bosses refused to buy her a pint. They'd buy her two halves...

LittleMysSister · 25/11/2021 16:06

Usually pints, unless I only want a small drink.

Don't care about being judged, care more about saving the money buy buying one pint instead of 2 halves one after the other Grin.

RightOnTheEdge · 25/11/2021 16:12

I work in a pub and most people women drink pints. No one cares.
I don't like any of those drinks but I drink Pepsi Max in pints if that counts?

JammieDodgepot · 25/11/2021 16:19

Pints. I have been drinking pints for over 40 years. I have occasionally been judged. I couldn’t give the furry crack of a rat’s arse.

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 25/11/2021 16:21

I'm a craft beer wanker, so if I'm drinking in a tap room or beer festival or somewhere there's lots of different beers, I'll usually have halves or 2/3s, or even sometimes 1/3s just so I can try more, especially if the beer is stronger....a pint of anything over about 5% abv is going to be too much for me!
If I'm drinking mass market lager in a pub then it's usually pints.

stalkersaga · 25/11/2021 16:23

Pints! Who the fuck orders a half when they really want a pint? What is this, 1950?

I no longer use them to demonstrate my ability to down in one, though.

nannybeach · 25/11/2021 16:26

Half, then it would take ages to drink,it would be the same with water. I can't drink with a meal.

Yutes · 25/11/2021 16:29

Who frowns upon ladies drinking pints?

I don’t know anyone in my circle that would frown upon it.
I remember being in Europe (France, Spain) and a lot of the women will have halves I suppose.

But have what you like and like what you have.

Plantsandpuddlesuits · 25/11/2021 16:32

Just a half for me, find a pint really heavy (I'm really petite). However I'll have 2 consecutive halfs 🤣

A couple of years ago though we were in a small village pub on a walking holiday (in the lakes) and they had a range of local cider so I ordered one which sounded nice (just a half 🤣) and it happened to be the strongest one. The landlord literally looked at me, clearly clocking my petite-ness, looked at my husband and said to my husband are you sure it's ok for her to have that it's awfully strong?! Wtaf?! At the time I just laughed it off and my husband was like yeah she's fine but now I look back and wish I'd of given the landlord a piece of my mind! And ordered a pint while I was at it the cheeky sexist idiot!

cranberryhaddock · 25/11/2021 16:39

@AgedVellum

If anyone in your vicinity feels you are somehow less of a woman for drinking pints, you should get better drinking buddies.

When I was a student in the 90s, there were a couple of old man pubs that refused to serve women pints in my city. In one about eight of us got male friends to go in and order eight pints, and then filed in and took their places and drank them. Unfemininely.

I love this!! Grin

Pints all the way for me, provided I'm not driving of course.

5foot5 · 25/11/2021 16:42

When I was younger I often drank pints. TBH this was sometimes done to make a point. I remember in my first job after graduating, early 1980s, I was about 22 and looked much younger. We had a team outing to the pub and one of the senior men asked in a very patronising way, as if I was about 6, "And what would 5foot like?" I took great delight in asking for a pint of bitter and watching his surprised expression. Funnily enough the man who would become DH was in the same team and was also there and I remember his conspiratorial grin - he didn't like pompous patronising man either.

These days I am heading towards the big 6 - 0 and I think if I drank pints I would be up all night. I prefer a big glass of wine Grin

MaggieFS · 25/11/2021 16:45

I've been drinking pints for more than 20 years. I think the times moved on some time ago!

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 25/11/2021 16:48

In my youth I'd drink pints. Nowadays my alcohol tolerance and pelvic floor are both greatly diminished, so halves it is. I am an uncultured type who prefers cold fizzy lager, which I'd rather not let get warm and flat while I nurse it for an hour.

Bluntness100 · 25/11/2021 16:52

Neither for me , I always have a bottle if I’m going to have a beer, I don’t really like fraught. However if I’m at a festival it’s always a pint as bottle not an option.
