My aunt doesn't want me to bring my dog to Christmas day

My Aunt has told me that she doesn't want me to bring my dog on Christmas day. There are going to be 22 of us so I can understand maybe she is worried about it being overwhelming, but my dog is very clean and well behaved and has been at most large family gatherings without issue.

Should I just respect her wishes or AIBU to push back and least ask why? Sad to think of my dog alone on xmas day (yes i am a crazy pet parent).

Yabu. Her house, her rules. The dog doesn't care that it's Xmas. If you are worried about leaving the dog either don't stay long or don't go at all.

Dishwashersaurous · 23/11/2021 16:58

Er. 22 people. Of course you can't take a dog.

She has said no.

You can choose not to go . But you can't take your dog

AnkleDeep · 23/11/2021 16:58

She's made it clear already. To push back would be rude, just accept her decision.

Billybagpuss · 23/11/2021 16:59

Seriously you feel the need to ask, your aunt has 22 people for Christmas and doesn’t want a dog in her house, that’s her perogative. Take dog for a lovely long walk in the morning see if a neighbour can let it out for a wee mid afternoon and you’ll be back early evening. It’s one day the dog will cope. I say this as a dog owner.

SnarkyBag · 23/11/2021 16:59

YABU unreasonable to push back. YABU to consider leaving dog alone for any extended period of time Xmas day or not.

I say that as a dog owner

SprayedWithDettol · 23/11/2021 16:59

Is this a reverse OP?

FrownedUpon · 23/11/2021 17:00

Her house. It’s up to her. Loads of people don’t like dogs and will see your dog as a nuisance. I’d get used to it.

Glenthebattleostrich · 23/11/2021 17:00

Accept it, and I say that as someone who prefers my dog to everyone apart from my child (although that could change if the child doesn't clean her room soon).

Outfoxedbyrabbits · 23/11/2021 17:00

Should I just respect her wishes

Yes, of course you should!

Peace43 · 23/11/2021 17:00

I wouldn’t go and leave dog home alone all day. My DPs live 5 mins walk away and DDog goes home over the Xmas dinner time as frackers freak him out. Can you attend for part of the day without doggo? They don’t know it’s Xmas!

ilovesooty · 23/11/2021 17:00

Of course you respect your aunt's wishes. She doesn't have to offer hospitality to your dog if she doesn't want to. You either arrange for your dog to be looked after, stay at home or attend for a brief time only if that's feasible.

PussyCatEatingPigsInBlankets · 23/11/2021 17:01

It doesn't matter how well behaved you think your dog is.
You need to respect her decision and choose between lunch or your dog.

Walkingthedog46 · 23/11/2021 17:01

22 people on a Christmas Day? Sounds like hell to me. I’d stay at home with my dog and enjoy the peace and quiet!! 😂

521Jeanie · 23/11/2021 17:02

I wouldn't want a dog in my house either, even for half an hour.. I have a cat. It wouldn't be fair.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 23/11/2021 17:03

If you turned up at my house with a dog when is expressly asked you not to you would be told to go home. Dog is not welcome, her house her rules. Either accept them or don't go.

Blackkitty · 23/11/2021 17:04

I don’t think it would be unreasonable to ask why since you are upset enough about it to post. To be honest, I’m surprised she didn’t say why when she told you not to bring him.

Ultimately it’s her decision as it’s her house so you’d be unreasonable to try and change her mind. But you wouldn’t be unreasonable to reject the invitation because of it.

I wouldn’t want to spend Xmas day without my dog either.

GeidiPrimes · 23/11/2021 17:06

My dog's my best mate, but I wouldn't ever insist on bringing him where he's not wanted. Not pleasant for dog or host. Some crazy people don't like animals in their home. Perfectly reasonable.

Bring him back an extra special doggie-bag to ease the guilt

PleasantBirthday · 23/11/2021 17:06

Why would you imagine your pet would be invited? Of course you shouldn't push back, you should be extremely embarrassed that she had to mention it.

DarlingFell · 23/11/2021 17:07

Don’t leave your poor dog alone all day on Christmas Day. Really pisses me off when people leave dogs, social creatures, who all suffer some degree of separation anxiety (no matter how ‘easy going’ you try and tell yourself your dog is) for longer than 4 hours. It’s bloody cruel. Don’t own a dog if you cannot commit most of your time to that dog.

AnotherMansCause · 23/11/2021 17:07

Because it’s her house & she’s said no? Because one of the other guests is allergic or scared of dogs? Because there will be young children present?

DappyApple · 23/11/2021 17:07

Right well if this is not a reverse then Yabu. You’ve been told not to bring the dog. Absolutely no need to “push back” as demand to know why.

What is it with some dog owners that think everyone should love and accommodate their dog without any regard to to how they are not always comfortable with it!

lastqueenofscotland · 23/11/2021 17:08

I’m a dog person and think you are hugely unreasonable

Blackkitty · 23/11/2021 17:08

It sounds like OP’s dog has been at family gatherings before I so don’t think it unreasonable to think dog can come again or that she should feel embarrassed about it.

You can't assume that someone wants your pet at their home in the first place, but then to put them in the awkward position of having to tell you that you can't bring a dog to a meal for 22 people? Really, an adult should know, not wonder if they should be pushing back.
