I seen this when I was in store today and it just didn't sit right with me. I do have a neurodiverse DD so that might be colouring my view slightly.

Funny that you’ve named changed to tell OP she’s insulted by trivial things, maybe that’s because you’ve got worked up about things on here before that people could say the same about. Or have you just signed up to mumsnet to tell OP this. Hmm

OP has said it just didn’t sit right with her but had also said maybe it’s just her, she hasn’t come across in any way as outraged or that bothered at all, just mentioning it to see what others thought. It’s other people that just want the drama.

This thread was featured in some daft rag so recent posters have probably actually joined MN to join in.
@hardyloveit as part of their additional needs or just kids having tantrums?
No additional needs. But I have close friends who have children with additional needs and a niece. None of those have been offended by the word meltdown!

FedUpMum40 · 27/11/2021 13:44

It’s a pic of a snowman melting, that is all

justasking111 · 27/11/2021 13:49

OH needs this because he insists on doing all the cooking 😂😂

GodIsAVegan · 27/11/2021 14:14

I haven't name changed anything. Tell me, is 'GodIsAVegan' your full name or just your first name

So this is your first post....ok. 👍 You’ve tried to make our OP is making a big fuss over this, if you read her posts, she’s really not. She mentioned it in a forum where lots of people mention lots of thing, many could be seen as ‘trivial’. There wouldn’t be many threads on here if it was all serious stuff.

And it’s my username, like yours is, unless you are actually named after a my little pony character. 🐴 🌈

Looks like a new word needs to be invented for an autistic meltdown to stop all this policing of language and talk of appropriation.
Any suggestions?

Yes, possibly. I did say that. Still no need to make out like OP has taken huge offence, she hasn’t. She’s been very calm and accepted some people think she’s unreasonable. It’s not her fault it’s been picked up by a newspaper.

I'm autistic. One of my children is autistic.
I don't find this offensive at all! I have meltdowns and shutdowns and they're not funny in the slightest...but I really can't get worked up about this. I thought 'meltdown' was used in lots of situations, genuinely didn't realise anybody thought it was exclusive to ND folk!

Oh for goodness sake.

It's a snowman who is melting.

It's funny and cute.

Everyone is looking for reasons to be offended these days. Just because SOME people don't find something funny doesn't mean it should be banned.

Couldn't disagree more! Wearing the jumper now, my favourite Xmas jumper so far!! And also, I'm autistic and I take no offence in it so I feel like we're taking this a bit far...
HereticFanjo · 06/12/2021 08:37

Meltdown is such a common word that no one group of people gets to own it. That said, it's interesting and sad to see how severe autistic meltdowns can be. It might be helpful for a specific clinical term to describe them - maybe there is one?
