I seen this when I was in store today and it just didn't sit right with me. I do have a neurodiverse DD so that might be colouring my view slightly.

If anything, it’s the other way round

BraveGoldie · 25/11/2021 07:21

I hadn't been aware of the word specific to autism. That is very interesting and makes a lot of sense.

I actually noticed that it's specified as a ladies' jumper - so thought the issue was that it's implying women are prone to emotional collapse in contrast to men!

@Dontbeasnowflake

Hows this anything to do with autism karen, some snow flakes cry about anything.

If anything a meltdown is akin to a mental break down.

Nothing wrong here

Is there anything less imaginative than the terms 'snowflake' and 'Karen'? You can do better than that surely?
Dontbeasnowflake · 25/11/2021 11:18

That's the problem with today's society, people are overly sensitive and get upset over the slightest thing were they'd need to be.

I wish people would stop getting worked up a the time there's worse things happening in the world.

No need to get offended over everything.

Thank you for your insight. Hmm

You should have just said if you want some attention Dontbeasnowflake.

DaisyandSimeon · 25/11/2021 11:52

The neurodiverse community do not own the term meltdown, I'm afraid so its not unreasonable to have a humerous jumper like this.

Personally I think medical professionals should come up with a correct medical term for the extreme loss of control experienced in certain situations, by people with neurodiverse conditions. The term meltdown is imprecise and poorly defined.

I am on the autistic spectrum, I worked in a school for severely autistic children for 11 years, my nephew is autistic - trust me I am very aware of what an Autistic meltdown can be.

If this jumper were to be showing the same slogan but illustrate that the snow man was in distress having a metal meltdown then it would be in poor taste, but this is not the case. The happy half melted snow man is simply melting and trying to bring a bit of cheer.

There are times I find Christmas overwhelming - my whole family meets up and although it is lovely, it is also so busy, and load, and demanding - sometimes I fell like I am going to have a mental meltdown. Seeing a jumper like this on those occasions might actually make me feel much better about the situation.

Please don't assume that all autistic people would be offended by this jumper - I am not. I understand that some people might find it in poor taste, but lets not judge those who don't.

The world is becoming so confusing with so many things becoming a taboo or inappropriate, one feels afraid to have fun for fear of the repercussions. Perfectly harmless statements taken so far out of context its is frightening.

There is nothing to indicate the context of this jumper is to ridicule those who suffer from mental meltdowns and certainly when I first saw it I did not think of a mental meltdown. I just thought it was a cute play on words and I know my nephew would feel the same way.

Chouetted · 26/11/2021 15:11

I think it's hilarious - the snowman is literally melting down.

One of my autistic traits is a very literal interpretation of phrases, so this tickles me.

EyeBallisticSquid · 26/11/2021 18:07

My ten-year-old who has ASD thought it was hilarious...

I don’t use “meltdown” for my ASD Teen …. I say “overwhelmed” … works better for us

GodIsAVegan · 27/11/2021 11:25

Funny that you’ve named changed to tell OP she’s insulted by trivial things, maybe that’s because you’ve got worked up about things on here before that people could say the same about. Or have you just signed up to mumsnet to tell OP this. Hmm

OP has said it just didn’t sit right with her but had also said maybe it’s just her, she hasn’t come across in any way as outraged or that bothered at all, just mentioning it to see what others thought. It’s other people that just want the drama.

hardyloveit · 27/11/2021 11:29

Oh god op please don't say your the customer who has made the news with this. Flipping heck so now any word is offensive??
My kids have meltdowns, I've been known to have to them! What the hell is the world coming to?

RussianSpy101 · 27/11/2021 12:27

@hardyloveit as part of their additional needs or just kids having tantrums?

5keletor · 27/11/2021 12:31

I'm autistic, have had a few meltdowns in my time and will undoubtedly have more in future. I can't find it in me to be remotely offended by this jumper.
