Mine is Chez Bruce been several times and always been faultless and accommodating.

The George Inn, Middlezoy, Somerset! Thats the name of the steak pub.

Its a 17th century pub and for those that like history, it was also a HQ for one of the sides (cant remember which) during the English civil war.

So my most recent best meal is here chamisse.com/. Very unassuming looking restaurant in London, but so calm after the crowds and amazing Lebanese food. As it wasn't busy the owner was happy to talk us through the food including an amazing aubergine salad with pomegranate jus. The chicken main was so tender, and he came with a takeaway box because I couldn't finish it all.

I used to have posher tastes but the trouble with paying so much for dinner is that I have high expectations, and then it's impossible for a restaurant to deliver on that consistently.

I do have a fondness for Six By Nico. There's always one course on their six course tasting menu that is incredible and I like the way they change the menu every six weeks, so the experience differs. Unfortunately as I've been so often, some of the dishes begin to seem a bit samey, but the service is always good.

Oh, and we're also really very partial to one of our local family-run Japanese restaurants, Sakura, in Weston-super-Mare.

SSSSSHHHHHH I know the Soho restaurant and if anyone says the name I will be FURIOUS
Why would you not want other people to go to a restaurant you like? That seems a bit wanky, tbh.
WoodburnersRUs · 19/11/2021 16:21

I ❤️ Andrew Edmonds - excellent value and not All that hard to get a table.

ColinTheKoala · 19/11/2021 16:24

Pied a Terre was lovely and so was the Pollen Street Social. I also liked Murano.

Another great place was the Grapevine in Odiham in Hampshire, sadly no more.

And I actually really like Pizza Express! It's decent and better than all the independent Italians round here which are overpriced and a bit rubbish.

There's also a place in Dublin by the river which is like an old bookshop - that was really nice too. Forgotten the name!

ColinTheKoala · 19/11/2021 16:24

It was The Winding Stair. I think it might have actually been recommended to me by someone on MN.

ColinTheKoala · 19/11/2021 16:25

Also the Sisters in Glasgow.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 19/11/2021 16:25

There’s a cafe on Porthmeor beach St Ives (not Porthminster which is nice but not as good) that serves the nicest tapas - so fresh and fragrant.
Also love Palomar in Soho and agree the Fat Duck blew me away.

Minorissue · 19/11/2021 16:25

The French Laundry

PigeonLittle · 19/11/2021 16:25

Breakfast at a swanky hotel. Dinner was absolute shite, but the breakfast was such a lovely mix of posh service, crockery etc and a down to earth environment and food.

Sometimes I have a nice little dream I get to go back.

And MANY years ago I had the most perfect steak frites in a Cafe Rouge. Very simple, cooked perfectly with garlic butter and a cold glass of rosè. Good friends. I spent a huge sum on a steak dinner this year and it didn't compare to that memory.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/11/2021 16:26

The Ubiquitous Chip in Glasgow.

I like it there too Smile but it’s a bit out of reach in time and cash these days.

Mine was a little independent in Newport Pagnell, long since gone. They did the best steak in the world.

friedeggandsauce · 19/11/2021 16:31

I know it's a chain but Wahaca was lovely, loved the small plates, lots of great flavours

lawandgin · 19/11/2021 16:35

Geranium in Copenhagen was fabulous about 7 years ago. The most expensive meal I've ever had, but what an experience. I think it was something like 15 courses with wine pairing and we were in there for about 5 hours! The setting was odd though at it was at the sports stadium!

Kenneldogsrock · 19/11/2021 16:37

The Gallo D’oro in Funchal. Locally, it’s the Corn Mill in Llangollen

ParishSpinster · 19/11/2021 16:37

The White Rabbit in Todmorden - astoundingly good tasting menu.i think it is closed now? It was an excellent meal.

The Kitchin in Edinburgh. Beautiful food and Tom Kitchin was cooking too. Really good cocktails as well.

thepastisanothercountry · 19/11/2021 16:38

A little resturant somewhere in the back streets of Venice - I was never able to find it again as if it magically appeared and disappeared. The staff were lovely in several languages, the food was melt in the mouth sublime and the service was superb - the bill was £40 for 2 of us including a litre of wine and I'd happily have paid 3 times as much - we left a huge tip.

Also visited this place with a friend a long time before this review came out. A major treat - can't wait to go back sometime (if we can get a table that is) [[https://www.theguardian.com/food/2021/oct/24/jay-rayner-restaurant-review-chakana-birmingham-it-is-all-kinds-of-fabulous]]

Chakana

ParishSpinster · 19/11/2021 16:42

I went to the Drum and Monkey in Harrogate, it was about 12 years ago though! The food was lovely and it was a very welcoming place.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 19/11/2021 16:47

Lots of them, depends what you are looking for..
El Bulli ( no longer around )
Le Louis XV ( something else)
French Laundry
Fat Duck a few times, not so into it these days
Nobu
Le Manoir
San Lorenzo
To name a few.

The only one i thought was junk on this list was Sat Bains, been a few times and really don’t rate it. Most of the places above are far superior. Horrid place itself, poor service, arrogance personified.

ThinWomansBrain · 19/11/2021 16:53

The Fat Duck at Bray

MotherofTerriers · 19/11/2021 17:00

Lalique restaurant at the Glenturret distillery
Aizle in Edinburgh
Undersea restaurant at Hurawalhi

KatherineJaneway · 19/11/2021 17:02

Geranium in Copenhagen is the best meal I've ever eaten.

Sat Baines is the best meal I've had in the UK
