Why do people wear their work lanyards in the supermarket

SplodgeWaddler · 15/11/2021 17:45

Am I the only one that finds this odd? Lots of people seem to do this in one of my local supermarkets, mainly women of a certain age. Sometimes clearly identifying where they work. I always zip mine away in a pocket of my bag.

Are you A Woman of A Certain Age?
We need to know.

I am 44 is that of certain age Grin

I dont know if it makes a difference but I remember to take it off more at 44 than I did at 24...there was many a time back then after night shifts I slept in the damn thing!

PGordino · 15/11/2021 18:19

@Ricetwisty

Some ids it's a disciplinary offence to wear it off site, yet the supermarket is still swarming with people who forget- wonder how they remember to get dressed in the morning.
We don’t. We fall asleep in work clothes and with lanyard on. Saves time in the morning.

Maybe this thread should go in Mumsnet classics.

Somanysocks · 15/11/2021 18:19

Now I want a lanyard to wear at the supermarket (cos I'm 'of a certain age').

VolumniaScreech · 15/11/2021 18:19

Mine says "BBC" on it. I wear it in Tesco so that people think I'm special not because I give it no thought at all

ColinTheKoala · 15/11/2021 18:19

@FuzzyPuffling

They are "Women of a certain age"???

As soon as you hit 40 or 50 or whatever age you deem "certain" you instantly forget who you are and need to wear a lanyard so you can constantly refer to it.

RandomLondoner · 15/11/2021 18:20

If a lanyard is part of your work attire, why would you take it off if you go out to lunch? It's more than zero work to store it away and get it out again, and there's no benefit to offset that cost, that I can think of.

LubaLuca · 15/11/2021 18:20

To make sure I don't forget mine, it's stitched into the neck of my liberty bodice (which I'm stitched into from September to July). I'm of a certain age, you see.

I can't believe this would bother anyone! Seriously, it's such an unimportant thing, including for the person wearing the lanyard. It is not affecting a single person anywhere at any time. I'm sure I've been to all sorts of places with mine still around me neck.

rainyskylight · 15/11/2021 18:20

Because the more you take it on and off the more chance you have of losing it. A bag can be stolen or left on the bus. It is much safer to keep it around your neck until home.

FuzzyPuffling · 15/11/2021 18:21

Mine says "CEO of the Whole World"
I like people to know who they are dealing with.

lockdownalli · 15/11/2021 18:21

HOW DARE THEY????

Bloody women of a certain age!!!

Outrageous behaviour. Jesus fucking christ

WestendVBroadway · 15/11/2021 18:21

Because I can't be arsed to take it off until I get home. @SplodgeWaddler Sometimes clearly identifying where they work
Imagine the shock and disgrace of identifying where you work. Let us ban anyone from going into a supermarket on their lunch break, or after their shift with their work uniform on lest it give away where they work.

I’ve still got mine on - sat on the sofa 2 hours after I got home!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/11/2021 18:22

My DP puts his on in the morning as he walks out the front door, then hangs it on one of the key hooks in the vestibule as he returns. Not only does he wear it in the supermarket sometimes, he always wears it on the bus. Possibly okay because he is male though?

user1471443411 · 15/11/2021 18:22

I don't think they're doing it to show off, just genuinely forget as they've had it on all day. Mine irritates me and I usually whip it off the minute I'm outside, but even then I sometimes forget and only realise halfway home.

Shasha17 · 15/11/2021 18:24

I don´t have a lanyard but I very much doubt i´d bother to take it off and put it away if I did. I lose things a lot. I´d probably keep it on and then hang it up by the front door when I got home.

PeanutButterJamming · 15/11/2021 18:24

I just forget to take it off when I’m rushing home from work via Sainsbury’s for a mad dash for something for dinner. No real mystery.

Women ‘of a certain age’ tend to work hard and cook for their families, not worry about what they’re wearing to the supermarket.

BogRollBOGOF · 15/11/2021 18:24

I'm glad I once forgot to take it off before going to the pub one evening. I'd also forgotten my driving licence and while I'm not "une femme d'une certain age" my occupation and minimum of 4 years of university to get that far was accepted as being old enough to be allowed my pint of cider Grin

BlackboardMonitorVimes · 15/11/2021 18:24

I hate the fact that my lanyard uses my breast as a slope and dangles off the end annoyingly. This forces people to stare at my breast to read my name. I hate it. I despise the patriarchal system that designed a piece of work attire specifically for men.

I do sometimes forget to take it off at the supermarket and sometimes the person at the till has said hello to me using my name. I couldn't get worked up as much about that.

Are you wearing a lanyard?
ColinTheKoala · 15/11/2021 18:25

I am a Woman of a Certain Age.

But I've just realised the downside of WFH, I only get to parade my lanyard around occasionally Sad

JustJustWhy · 15/11/2021 18:25

Because often after work I'm too tired to wipe my own arse, never mind worry about some busybody looking at my lanyard.
