Why do people wear their work lanyards in the supermarket

SplodgeWaddler · 15/11/2021 17:45

Am I the only one that finds this odd? Lots of people seem to do this in one of my local supermarkets, mainly women of a certain age. Sometimes clearly identifying where they work. I always zip mine away in a pocket of my bag.

@WhiteVanWoman91

I’m with you, OP. Even worse are the ones who actually wear their work clothes.
Twats! Fancy not going home to change before going to the supermarket! Who doesn't take spare clothes to work to change into if they need to nip on their dinner hour. Pft.
TuftyMarmoset · 15/11/2021 18:00

I need mine to get out of my building so I usually don’t end up taking it off until I get home. I make sure to take it off in shops if I’m not wearing my coat though because I’ve been mistaken for staff in several places even though they have a distinct uniform that was nothing like my clothes 🤦‍♀️

Shrimpseyelashes · 15/11/2021 18:00

Eh? How is this even a thing to get worked up about?

Belledan1 · 15/11/2021 18:01

I don't put mine on until I am getting off the bus in the morning as it lets me in the building and dont want to be tipping my bag out in the street but I might pop to the supermarket on the way in. I always forget on the way home to take it off. I am in my 50s

KeyWorker · 15/11/2021 18:01

People should be reminded not to wear lanyards in the car, they can cause chest wall trauma if the air bag is deployed.

Ricetwisty · 15/11/2021 18:02

Some ids it's a disciplinary offence to wear it off site, yet the supermarket is still swarming with people who forget- wonder how they remember to get dressed in the morning.

Jensonfromtheblock · 15/11/2021 18:02

I wear mine because I am so proud of my amazing place of work.

loudbatperson · 15/11/2021 18:02

I would guess it's just so they take it off and put it in a set place at home to reduce the chance of forgetting it the next day (humans are creatures of habit after all).

Although I wonder if this is a thinly veiled dig at workers of a particular national services, who seem to annoy people by receiving certain discounts and when queue skipping when long quest were a thing. I have seen a couple of instances of people assuming NHS staff have their lanyard on to try and get special treatment.

I do not work for the NHS btw, nor does my work require me to wear any type of lanyard.

Chakraleaf · 15/11/2021 18:03

Usually in a massive rush

melj1213 · 15/11/2021 18:03

I work in a supermarket and couldn't care less whether someone is wearing a work lanyard or not except if they're being abusive/rude to our staff, in which case I find that a pointed look at their lanyard to find out their name/employer usually gets them to back off when they realise that they aren't an anonymous brat but can actually be identified and there may be consequences.

I have only ever had to contact an employer once and that was because they were being very abusive and using their position to belittle my employee ("I am XYZ at ABC company so do as I say because I am very important" etc). What they weren't aware of was that a relative of mine is one of the directors of said company and was not impressed to find out their employee was bringing the company into disrepute with their behaviour and the employee was pulled in and told in no uncertain terms that they needed to formally apologise and never again use their position to abuse retail staff, or they would find themselves without a position in future.

maddiemookins16mum · 15/11/2021 18:04

I’m 57, I’m so confused and incapable now that I wear mine to bed.

ItsLittoralViolins · 15/11/2021 18:04

mainly women of a certain age

It's because their lanyards are steeped in HRT and can be clutched, along with the pearls obvs, when attempting to use difficult technology like tills and exits.

Starlightstarbright1 · 15/11/2021 18:04

I put mine on when i get dressed. Eat my breakfast with mine on..easier than forgetting it.

I also wear it till i get home and get changed

trilbydoll · 15/11/2021 18:04

Because I don't carry a bag and I've already lost one work pass in a public place, I don't want to do it again!

MintyGreenDream · 15/11/2021 18:05

I do it because
1.ive forgot or
2.dont care if people know where I work.
Why would I?

RosieLemonade · 15/11/2021 18:05

My sister once dated a man who wore his constantly. Even on weekends at restaurants.

Raaaaaaarr · 15/11/2021 18:06

Because they are busy and don't have time to think about pointless shit like this.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 15/11/2021 18:06

I don't even notice what other people are wearing.

They've probably just forgotten

supersop60 · 15/11/2021 18:06

I am a lady of a certain age and my brain is obviously beginning to atrophy, so I keep mine on in case I forget who I am. People will help me because I am very very important.....

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 15/11/2021 18:06

Because mine is round my neck to get through doors at work. Its not just a lanyard - its a door opener (NHS) and I forget to take it off when I'm popping to the supermarket on my way home.

I also wear my work hoodie. I'm 36...not sure if that puts me in the defined "certain age" bracket.

IDGAF

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 15/11/2021 18:07

I tend to forget I'm wearing it because I've had it on all day.
If I'm driving I take it off because it gets caught in my seat belt and annoys me, but if walking it's just part of my outfit for that day and I pay it no mind, unless I need my fob to get back in the building.

RuggerHug · 15/11/2021 18:07

OP do you work somewhere you have to take them off once you're outside the building? Because I worked somewhere for years that it was drilled into us that we weren't to have it on us or visible once we left the building because if we 'identified' ourselves as staff it affected security and insurance stepping in. If you've had that it does seem odd seeing them out of place.

TuftyMarmoset · 15/11/2021 18:07

@Ricetwisty

Some ids it's a disciplinary offence to wear it off site, yet the supermarket is still swarming with people who forget- wonder how they remember to get dressed in the morning.
Is that a specific industry? I’ve never heard of that before.

Actually you just made me think, it’s funny because we have a whole process for what to do if we lose a notebook but no one has ever mentioned a pass being a potential security issue. But they don’t say the organisation name on them tbf.

Mellowyellow222 · 15/11/2021 18:07

Because they forgot.

I have never noticed that it is only women of a certain age though!

Maybe they are sued to wearing necklaces

Hapoydayz · 15/11/2021 18:08

I noticed at my work that it was mainly the men that still had theirs on in the pub after work.
