Why do people wear their work lanyards in the supermarket

529 replies

SplodgeWaddler · 15/11/2021 17:45

Am I the only one that finds this odd? Lots of people seem to do this in one of my local supermarkets, mainly women of a certain age. Sometimes clearly identifying where they work. I always zip mine away in a pocket of my bag.

I wear a lanyard, hand sanitizer and a stopwatch round my neck. I put them on when I get dressed and take them off when I get home and get changed.
I'm a woman of a certain age, I'll lose/forget them if I start taking them off willy nilly!
I've enough shit to remember without all that.

AgathaAllAlong · 15/11/2021 18:26

Because it costs money to replace. Mine goes on in the morning, off when I get home, or it gets lost.

BlackboardMonitorVimes · 15/11/2021 18:26

@boireannach

I’m a woman of a certain age - AMA
How old are you? No one seems quite sure what a certain age is.
ColinTheKoala · 15/11/2021 18:27

@DPotter

Lack of pockets in women's clothing
Yes, more prosaically, this is the main reason I think.
MrsLargeEmbodied · 15/11/2021 18:27

indeed who cares,
i try not to, tbh, in case someone recognizes my name!

Hospedia · 15/11/2021 18:28

But I've just realised the downside of WFH, I only get to parade my lanyard around occasionally
.you could always wear it to answer the door to the postie and the Hermes driver? For true authenticity you could get a visitor book and make everyone - including your family- sign in and out at the door.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 15/11/2021 18:28

i put mine in my handbag ideally

PupInAPram · 15/11/2021 18:28

I'm showing off that I can still hold down a job, despite being a decrepit old biddy a woman of a certain age.

From experience,.Usually it's habit, or you just forget to take it off plus after getting used to wearing it, it becomes part of your outfit until you get back.
RonSwansonsChair · 15/11/2021 18:29

I could easily still be wearing it hours after I get home - maybe I should get one that says Mam so everyone in my house knows who I am?

OP, did you not read the previous thread whereby women left it on going to the supermarket just to make others feel inferior?? Maybe that's why?

Lulu1919 · 15/11/2021 18:29

I forget I'm wearing one !!!

DriftingBlue · 15/11/2021 18:30

It drives me crazy that DH comes home still wearing his. We are not allowed to step foot outside the building wearing our work lanyards so I always find it really strange.

sometimes the visitor log is good idea as you can track the activities ect.
LittleDandelionClock · 15/11/2021 18:30

Maybe they CBA to take it off, or as a few posters have said, they want to show off where they work, (or show that they have a job!)

What baffles me is vicars wearing their dog collar/vicar apparel when they are not 'vicaring.' I see this a LOT.

I see them with it on in the supermarket, and at the pub or in a cafe/restaurant, and if ever there's a vicar on a quiz show (The Chase, Tipping Point, Catchphrase etc,) they ALWAYS wear their dog collar. Why? Confused

You don't get police officers and firefighters wearing their uniform when they are not on shift, or anyone else for that matter. So why do vicars do it? Confused

Whereismumhiding3 · 15/11/2021 18:30

I don't take mine off until I get home or I'd lose it. I need it to access doors and car park barriers in multiple buildings and wards. It's hard to notice and a bit of a tangle under scarf, if have unusually stopped off on the way home.

It's part of my routine putting it on in the morning when leaving and taking it off when walking through the door, straight into the pot it lives in with my keys.

Haven't RTFT so someone may have already mentioned this, but whilst forgetting to take your ID off is probably a no issue if you're walking home it's a very bad idea to wear a lanyard/ID badge whilst you are driving. If you have an accident and your air bag deploys, extremely nasty injuries can result. It never occurred to me that there was any issue with going home with my badge round my neck until I found put the hard way. Reading afterwards I discovered that it is quite a well recognised mechanism of injury but I had never heard of it or been warned of any danger. My lanyard had a metal clip which probably made it worse, but people have been seriously injured just by plastic ID cards. I don't wear anything round my neck in the car now.

Do you have the link to the thread please

What a weird thing to notice

Arrowheart · 15/11/2021 18:35

In answer to your question if you're the only one who finds this odd, YES YOU ARE!!!

Why does it bother you? I can't get my head around your OP at all. You must find a lot of stuff odd if this is an example.

PrtScn · 15/11/2021 18:35

We aren’t allowed to wear our lanyards outside of work, not even to wear it in the car on the way to work, especially if keys are attached to it. Apparently it’s dangerous;

HeronLanyon · 15/11/2021 18:36

This may sound crazy but I think I see the wearing of them out and about as being kind of branded by their workplace - less of an individual - more entrapped by employers. Obviously I can see it’s convenient but I just can’t shift that thought. Worked for a long time before they existed. Might feel differently if they’d always featured. Also I’m predominantly self employed.
Also have general concerns when partic women travel home with full name and place of work showing. For me that would be security/safety issue.

SnowyPetals · 15/11/2021 18:36

I am a woman of a certain age. Sometimes for work events I wear a polo shirt with my name on it. And my full name - surname and all. I don't always cover it up whilst out in public. It's so people know my name in case my certain age brain forgets when I get lost.

DontTellThemYourNamePike · 15/11/2021 18:36

Somebody would have to be wearing nothing but a lanyard for me to notice.

SpookyPumpkinPants · 15/11/2021 18:36

@MattHancocksSexTape

Because they aren’t as clever and amazing as you.
