Why do people wear their work lanyards in the supermarket

SplodgeWaddler · 15/11/2021 17:45

Am I the only one that finds this odd? Lots of people seem to do this in one of my local supermarkets, mainly women of a certain age. Sometimes clearly identifying where they work. I always zip mine away in a pocket of my bag.

I try to remember to tuck it into my clothes so people can't see my name. If I took it off I'd be in danger of losing it knowing me!

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 15/11/2021 18:08

Also, what's the "certain age" I'm 31...

Faevern · 15/11/2021 18:09

@RosieLemonade

My sister once dated a man who wore his constantly. Even on weekends at restaurants.
I know someone who has his car fob on his so yep he wear it a lot.
Yourstupidityexhaustsme · 15/11/2021 18:09

For the same reason I am often still wearing it at bedtime. It’s warm and comfy around my neck and I simply forget it’s there!

Hankunamatata · 15/11/2021 18:10

Iv stopped taking off until I'm in the house so I don't lose or forget it. I change coats or bags, don't always take the car so my lanyard is behind front door on a peg and it goes back there.

Snuggledupforwinter · 15/11/2021 18:10

My security pass on my lanyard opens the door at work. When sleep deprived I have been known to try and use it to tap in on the Tube and open my front door! Blush

bloodywhitecat · 15/11/2021 18:11

There are days I struggle to remember where I parked the car or what car I am driving, remembering to take my lanyard off is the least of my worries.

HikingforScenery · 15/11/2021 18:11

I take mine off as soon as I leave work, we’re advised to.

In my previous role, I sometimes forgot but would remove it as soon as I realised.

It’s also possible that some people are very proud of their job and wear it everywhere they can with pride? Nothing wrong with that either

pinkcattydude · 15/11/2021 18:12

Are we supposed to hide where we work. If it’s very cold and I don’t have a coat I wear a fleece emblazoned with our logo and my lanyard. Ooops

NeedsCharging · 15/11/2021 18:12

I just looked down and yep...Still wearing mine even though I got in from work at 10 past 4!
Totally forgot Blush

PlanDeRaccordement · 15/11/2021 18:12

People forget. And it’s not just women.

There was one man who stormed the US Capitol building with the mob and despite obscuring his face a bit, neglected to remove his work lanyard. The photos of him with that buffalo headed shaman man are hilarious. His lanyard was how the FBI identified him and then arrested him...and his work sacked him.

But anyway, I always remove mine as it’s a security risk for public to see it and perhaps try and counterfeit it.

Pumpkinstace · 15/11/2021 18:13

You'd hate me op.

I have magnetic marketing material stuck to my car and I leave it on there on my day off because I'm lazy.

Hankunamatata · 15/11/2021 18:13

I'm terrified of losing mine as its the only way to get in and out of work carpark and access work buildings and different floors/offices. If you don't have lanyard then you cant really work that day

derenstar · 15/11/2021 18:14

I opened this thread thinking oh shit, someone must have seen me in the local Aldis on my way home from work today! I am a woman of a certain age.

I simply forget and also I simply don’t care.

Mortifiedloostory · 15/11/2021 18:14

Because they can't be arsed taking them off, I imagine. At least that's why I used to do it when i wore one.

Take off, put in bag/pocket, get back to work, forget it isn't round one's neck, scrabble about, panicking about being late baack and/or that you've lost it, can't remember if in bag or pocket, have to put bag down and rummage, holding up a queue perhaps...

Or, just leave the bloody thing on :)

SarahJeffers341 · 15/11/2021 18:14

Because I’ve just left work and forget it’s on. Can’t believe you don’t have anything better to worry about!

Maireas · 15/11/2021 18:15

Are you A Woman of A Certain Age? We need to know.
LeicesterIntheMorning · 15/11/2021 18:15

@MattHancocksSexTape

Because they aren’t as clever and amazing as you.

Faevern · 15/11/2021 18:16

It's my super power you see, on a morning just before I start work I'm just me, then I put the lanyard on and with a quick twirl I am in work mode, ready for anything. I can't take it off until the end of the day because I will turn into a toad or something.

Either that or I just forget it's there.

seadreams · 15/11/2021 18:16

Well I wear mine to the supermarket, so if by woman of a certain age you mean mid 20s then sure... I frequently go to the supermarket on the way home in the evenings and I've no reason to take it off. I keep my apartment fob and my tesco clubcard on it too so why not?

Bluntness100 · 15/11/2021 18:17

What the hell is women of a certain age? What a silly thing to say.

Personally I’ve always kept mine on since I was in my twenties, does it matter?

whataballbag · 15/11/2021 18:18

Because so far I’ve lost 4 door passes and 3 smart cards so I’ve trained myself to only take it off by the door hook.

Not arsed about people seeing it or knowing where I work. The green uniform gives it away a bit

MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 15/11/2021 18:18

Dps doesnt leave his side because he's a pain in the arse who would lose his own shadow.

Ricetwisty · 15/11/2021 18:18

Is that a specific industry? I’ve never heard of that before.

Actually you just made me think, it’s funny because we have a whole process for what to do if we lose a notebook but no one has ever mentioned a pass being a potential security issue. But they don’t say the organisation name on them tbf.

Not an industry as such, a department where everyone wearing one will have a certain level of clearance- either the person themselves or the design of the ID could be of interest. Still people aren't arsed though!

simonisnotme · 15/11/2021 18:18

because if i dump it in the car i will forget it
