Why do people wear their work lanyards in the supermarket

SplodgeWaddler · 15/11/2021 17:45

Am I the only one that finds this odd? Lots of people seem to do this in one of my local supermarkets, mainly women of a certain age. Sometimes clearly identifying where they work. I always zip mine away in a pocket of my bag.

@ jontyl not with me it isn’t? For 99% of the other reasons given to OP, I. Can’t be bothered, what’s the point and it will get lost.

AryaStarkWolf · 17/11/2021 10:42

I just don't understand why it would even register with someone let alone bother them, such an odd thing to get upset about

crystal1717 · 17/11/2021 11:19

I love wearing mine to the supermarket. I wear it deliberately (after work). Not on days off - I'm not that bad! :)

I get treated substantially better with it on.

In the same outfit with no lanyard - on days off - derisive looks and bad service. With lanyard - I get the respect I deserve :)
I do have old clothes and rock the aged academic look.

crystal1717 · 17/11/2021 11:31

Just read the full thread and wanted to mention somewhat hesitantly - that the 'disdain and disapproval, changing to begrudged respect / camaraderie' effect of a lanyard - in the same outfit, is amplified at the school gate.
I forgotten about that bit.

Great post!! X

CoalCraft · 17/11/2021 15:22

I only realised when I got back in the car after last week's shop that I was still wearing my lanyard. I'd just forgotten to take it off.

Bebethany · 17/11/2021 17:30

@ KaycePollard well said, some people just have too much time on their hands!!

Plumbear2 · 17/11/2021 17:37

My kids wear there's if the government the supwrmarket for sweets after school. Sorry we didn't realise this was wrong 😉😂

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 17/11/2021 17:45

I actually wear two lanyards. My school one and one with my mask on it! Double the reason to offend I suppose!! I do now tuck both inside my coat when we are driving.

Bollocks989 · 17/11/2021 18:35

Possibly they are tired and exhausted working parents who have run in between 'x' and 'x' and need food and that hiding or removing lanyard wasn't too of their priority list

Mamamamasaurus · 17/11/2021 18:41

Because my lanyard ia blingy AF and I like to make school yard mums and other shoppers jealous. Why else?

Wouldn't the airbag be able to drive the lanyard I your chest regardless of whether it was over or under your coat?
ThirdElephant · 17/11/2021 18:48

*into your chest

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 17/11/2021 18:59

Actually it will now go into my bag until I get to work!

Blowingahoolly · 17/11/2021 20:12

I wear mine on holiday with a leopard print costume.

pictish · 17/11/2021 20:41

@jontyl

It's a status thing Wink
I just laughed out loud at that.
KittensWearingWoollyMittens · 17/11/2021 20:44

Because I am afraid of misplacing it. I must be of a "certain age", whatever the fuck that means

Far too much time on your hands Mrs
Latenightreader · 18/11/2021 07:08

I do have a bag, but it is a large and full bag so if I put my lanyard inside it would vanish into the depths and take a few mo(nths)ments to excavate. I really should clear it out...

Needsleep32 · 18/11/2021 07:25

I do this. I haven’t forgotten, I just take mine off when I get home. What’s the big deal?

FootieMama · 18/11/2021 16:10

YANBU, I use mine because is inconvenient to take it off but tuck the photo I'd in a pocket or inside my shirt. Employer actually recommend people to not have them in view in public places

Worldgonecrazy · 19/11/2021 09:49

I used to work somewhere it was deemed a security risk to wear them outside work, though some younger people were so thrilled to get a job with the BBC they would wear them clubbing !?

Now if I have it on it’s because I either can’t be added to put it in my rucksack or my menopausal memory prevents me.

StrongCoffeAvalanche · 20/11/2021 09:58

Anyone else irritated the OP didn't come back

FrostedCupcakes · 20/11/2021 12:22

Don't have anything better to do, do you OP?

MissCruellaDeVil · 20/11/2021 12:25

I'm a teacher, I often leave mine on until I get home, I also pop out at lunch time and don't bother to take it off. Who cares if they can tell where I work, someone could just as easily google my name and it would bring up the schools website staff page. I need the lanyard to open the gates and access the building, if I took it off I'd lose it!
