Why do people wear their work lanyards in the supermarket

Am I the only one that finds this odd? Lots of people seem to do this in one of my local supermarkets, mainly women of a certain age. Sometimes clearly identifying where they work. I always zip mine away in a pocket of my bag.
@KittenKong where did you get your suffragette lanyard? I quite fancy one of those
eBay. I’m sure there are loads of nicer ones though!

plumpylumpydumpy · 15/11/2021 17:52

I wear mine because it has an emergency call button on the back and sometimes I'm carrying money.
I might also pop in shops on the way back from delivering the money so I am still wearing it!

RiskyCookie · 15/11/2021 17:52

I'm rushing and tend to just go in as I am. Lanyard and all.

521Jeanie · 15/11/2021 17:52

I take mine off and hang it straight by the front door at home - if it was tucked into a random bag or pocket, I'd forget it the next day.

BarryTheKestrel · 15/11/2021 17:53

Mine can give me discount in a variety of places so if I'm going there, I won't take it off. However I tend to take it off on leaving the building and put it into my bag so I don't misplace it at home.

But frankly, what difference does this make to anyone's lives?

PieMistee · 15/11/2021 17:53

Because they have more important things to think about.

Like what cake to buy for tea.

Cocolapew · 15/11/2021 17:53

Because I know there's not person in the supermarket who gives a shiny shit where I work.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 15/11/2021 17:53

@FuzzyPuffling

They are "Women of a certain age"???

As soon as you hit 40 or 50 or whatever age you deem "certain" you instantly forget who you are and need to wear a lanyard so you can constantly refer to it.

I've needed a lanyard since around the age of 20 and always keep it on so the certain age must either be young or a really large bracket
Spiceup · 15/11/2021 17:54

"Women of a certian age", with a million more important things than removing their lanyard to think about, I'd imagine.

Although at my work they do send regular emails about how dangerous it is to drive in them, but I don't always remember to take it off.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 15/11/2021 17:54

They forgot to take it off. That's all.

mugglenutmeg · 15/11/2021 17:54

Mostly I take mine off, but sometimes I forget and end up wearing it while doing a grocery shop or putting petrol in on the way home.

Why does it matter to you?

GammyLeg · 15/11/2021 17:55

I wear mine everywhere, even to bed. It’s to remind me and everyone else how important and special I am. And yes, I am of a certain age (44).

Gladioli23 · 15/11/2021 17:55

I don't care about whether I have it on or now and I won't mislay it if it's round my neck!

DreamerSeven · 15/11/2021 17:55

I’m not sure what age you have to be to qualify as “of a certain age” but I obviously keep mine on so people think I’ve got an important job. How could they possibly know if I don’t wear my lanyard? Grin

Actually yes - I needed one in my first job because we had a snazzy building that had fobs for floors and certain corridors (it was a right pain to get around).

woodhill · 15/11/2021 17:58

I sometimes tuck mine under my coat, I need it on me to get back into the building, into car park and open doors

Pain if I lose it, goes in the glove compartment

WhiteVanWoman91 · 15/11/2021 17:58

I’m with you, OP. Even worse are the ones who actually wear their work clothes.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 15/11/2021 17:59

I don't think this has gone the way the op hoped

IncessantNameChanger · 15/11/2021 17:59

Losing mine was a security threat and it lived at home in a certain place so I would never mislay it. But I turned my card around so you couldn't see my name ( it opened the doors I never saw clients on site).

You couldnt tell from looking what I did for a living so I'm not sure it could offend anyone

malmi · 15/11/2021 17:59

Think of the specific reason why you take yours off.

Then imagine you simply don't care about that.

Now you know.

NothingIsWrong · 15/11/2021 18:00

If I lose mine it's utterly hellish trying to get a replacement and I work across several sites and am not well known at some of them, so I have to have it. Hence it goes on in the morning and comes off when I walk through the door.

peoniesarejustperfect · 15/11/2021 18:00

Pet hate of mine Grin Grin

Jackofallsorts · 15/11/2021 18:00

I refuse to wear one at work. Even though it's the regulation- I hate them.
