Why do people wear their work lanyards in the supermarket

SplodgeWaddler · 15/11/2021 17:45

Am I the only one that finds this odd? Lots of people seem to do this in one of my local supermarkets, mainly women of a certain age. Sometimes clearly identifying where they work. I always zip mine away in a pocket of my bag.

People who don't carry handbags where do you put your purse, phone, keys, make up and so on.

My coat pockets. I use my phone to pay for things and it is usually in my hand, lip gloss goes into my inner coat pocket which is usually next to my ear buds if they’re not already around my neck and my bus pass in another pocket while my lanyard is either in a pocket or also around my neck. I don’t carry my house keys because my husband wfh and/or is going to be home with our boys anyway by time I get home.

I've always worked in security sensitive areas and if we were found with our lanyards on outside of the building we worked in, it would be a disciplinary offence.

Sunflower lanyards have become a social shorthand for "I've got special needs and am mask exempt", but apart from that, there should be no excuse for wearing works ID (which often double as key cards) outside of work.

boreon · 16/11/2021 13:22

My work attire does not have pockets, so it has to be around my neck on a lanyard. I don't feel like a tagged animal or feel like I need it to belong !

GrannyWeatherwaxsHatpin · 16/11/2021 13:23

Refusing to wear one one be a disciplinary matter where I work.

In my previous job you had to display your pass as you walked through the doors; security would stop you and ask to see it if you didn't. Much easier not to have to go through the "Stop please where's your pass/rummaging at the bottom of my bag only to realise it's on my desk and I'm already late for a meeting" rigmarole by just leaving the damn thing round my neck.

People who don't carry handbags where do you put your purse, phone, keys, make up and so on.

I've got my keys and my phone in my pockets. What else do I need?

maddy68 · 16/11/2021 14:17

Because I will lose mine if it doesn't go back in the right place at home

Itsanewdah · 16/11/2021 15:21

because we need to wear ours until we gave left the premise and I don’t want to take it off while walking

AliceAbsolum · 16/11/2021 15:24

Lazyness on my part and also not realizing it was a problem

BruiserWoods · 16/11/2021 15:29

I'm so amazed it annoys some people! Well, the op.

liveforsummer · 16/11/2021 15:35

mainly women of a certain age.
Us tired peri menopausal women start to get forgetful! Grin

liveforsummer · 16/11/2021 15:36

I don't carry make up or a purse. Plenty room in my pocket for keys and phone

luckylavender · 16/11/2021 15:38

I put mine on when I leave the house and pop it back in my bag when I get home.

liveforsummer · 16/11/2021 15:38

I don't think it would suit a renegade like you who clearly fights against the system by keeping your pass in your pocket.

@FuzzyPuffling

They are "Women of a certain age"???

As soon as you hit 40 or 50 or whatever age you deem "certain" you instantly forget who you are and need to wear a lanyard so you can constantly refer to it.

I keep one. just for supermarket shopping, from my old job of 12 years ago with a special card I had made in it with job title of ‘Chief Executive’ in big letters. Makes me feel so important so people wouldn’t guess I’m a SAHM within nothing to do but lounge on the sofa and eat crisps all day Wink.

CrackersDontMatter · 16/11/2021 15:58

Because it goes in a specific place as soon as I take it off otherwise I would forget it.

CrackersDontMatter · 16/11/2021 15:59

Also, mine is not a keycard.

notbloodylikely · 16/11/2021 17:25

As a lanyard-wearing woman of what I suspect might be a certain age, these responses are brilliant!

Morgysmum · 16/11/2021 17:32

I mainly forgot to take mine off, I would hop on the bus. Read my phone, or do nothing. Then hop off the bus to get something at Tesco. Forgetting about the lanyard.

notbloodylikely · 16/11/2021 17:33

Also, in answer to firesidefox and any other rebels without a cause, we have to wear ours round our necks, not because we are under the control of the overlords, but for safeguarding and security reasons. I’m sure that’s why most people have them…

Alexbob · 16/11/2021 17:36

I often forget I'm wearing it. And then if I realise in the shop I can't be faffed trying to take it off because with my bag and scarf and clothing layers and hair I'll end up accidentally hanging myself or pulling my top up and exposing a boob or something. No one needs to see that...

trappedsincesundaymorn · 16/11/2021 17:46

Because if I take it off I don't get the 10% "carers discount" the local independent shop offers. Grin

TSSDNCOP · 16/11/2021 17:51

I've never seen a farm animal with a lanyard.

I carry mine about as it irritates my neck and snags my clothes as it has annoying keys on it too. Plus I'm tall and all the key mags are low so I have to take it off to gain entry.

Sometimes I have it dangling from my back pocket. I like to think that's quite jaunty.

I keep meaning to buy a thing like I had in a previous job that was on a retracting elastic, but it's been three years and I haven't gotten round to it yet.

nousernamehere01 · 16/11/2021 17:52

My partner does this, but there's no point him taking it off because both his work polo and fleece have the name of the business on anyway!
Also he just forgets, if you're wearing it all day I imagine it feels normal.

purplebunny2012 · 16/11/2021 17:58

Does it really matter that much to you?
I take mine off as soon as I'm in the car because I've been wearing it all day, but I couldn't care if others are wearing theirs or not

Kittysummer · 16/11/2021 18:00

Some people forget who they are and need a lanyard to tell them
