Why do people wear their work lanyards in the supermarket

SplodgeWaddler · 15/11/2021 17:45

Am I the only one that finds this odd? Lots of people seem to do this in one of my local supermarkets, mainly women of a certain age. Sometimes clearly identifying where they work. I always zip mine away in a pocket of my bag.

Londoncallingme · 16/11/2021 18:04

Who would even notice let alone care?

Jontomsam · 16/11/2021 18:05

This is mostly because I’m that used to wearing it I forget it’s there! 🤷🏼‍♀️🤣🤣

purplebunny2012 · 16/11/2021 18:06

@Firesidefox

I think some people like a work lanyard as it feels like they belong somewhere.

I have always refused to wear one, keeping my work access pass in my pocket rather than around my neck like a tagged animal on a farm.

Mine is too uncomfortable for me to keep in a pocket whilst I'm sat at my desk, and if I take it off I forget to take it with me and can't get out of my office. Your attitude is very weird, I feel like an employee not a farm animal
waitingpatientlyforspring · 16/11/2021 18:10

@MrsTerryPratchett

Because I forget.

I once got a discount I didn't know about because of it though!

Me too! So it's worth forgetting sometimes. To be fair, I rarely take mine off before I get home m. Its part of my routine and I tend to misplace it if I don't follow my routine. I don't know why its such a bug deal.
HeronLanyon · 16/11/2021 18:11

I have sympathy with you firefox. I think it does something to our sense of self to spend so long with our workplace hanging around our neck. I don’t as almost wholly self employed but never wear anything around my next when I need swipe card. Obvs for some it’s sensible as used a lot all day but I’d definitely take it off when out and about in my own time.

XenoBitch · 16/11/2021 18:12

Because I just wanted to get out of work and go get some food. It was also by accidently keeping my lanyard on that I found out I could get discounts (NHS).

purplebunny2012 · 16/11/2021 18:13

Oh, and have you see the subreddit I Don't Work Here Lady? Seems these might be smart women of a certain age that don't want to get mistaken for employees of that retail establishment

lilstarr99 · 16/11/2021 18:17

I always forget to take mine off - I’ve often worn it until bedtime! Why does it matter to you so much to post it here?

Iseeyoulookingatme · 16/11/2021 18:23

I normally do my food shopping after work, I keep my lanyard on so I don't lose it and put it in the same place when I get home.

1forAll74 · 16/11/2021 18:26

I need one with name and address on, in case i forget who I am, and need to get home, as I am of a certain age !

Overtired201984 · 16/11/2021 18:32

Wow an actual post on this ! Because people who are busy and nip for a pint milk or bread after a full days work don’t have their work pass as the first thing on their mind 🙄

This is me 😂😂 it's just a normal part of working life to put it on now and I rarely take it off until I go for a bath
maybloss2 · 16/11/2021 18:48

I’m well past a ‘certain’ age and would wear only wear a lanyard to remind me it’s a work day. 😀
No, really who cares?
Are you of a ‘certain age’ ie young and have an enormous great bag with absolutely everything you ‘might’ need for, in my view, a weekend away, so have ample room to stash your lanyard?
Certain age indeed. 🤣

Tessabelle74 · 16/11/2021 18:51

How to say you're a millennial without saying you're a millenial

Gilly12345 · 16/11/2021 18:56

Because they probably hang it up in their bedroom when home and then it is ready for the next day with the next days clothes 🤔🤔🤔

Gilly12345 · 16/11/2021 18:57

What a daft question.

wellstopdoingitthen · 16/11/2021 19:02

Some people really do have nothing to occupy them...

I am someone who quite frequently forgets to take my lanyard off. I'm probably of a 'certain age' too.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 16/11/2021 19:10

I put mine on before i leave the house and take it off when i get home.

I need it to get through every door as well as to work the printer whilst at work.

If I took it off, id leave it where i put it and that would be inconvenient, so it stays round my neck

HTH

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 16/11/2021 19:14

@LethargicActress

Because they’re stopping in at the supermarket on the way home from work and they’ve forgotten to take it off. Or it’s just part of their routine to take it off and hang it up when they get home.
Yeah - that’s me (second sentence)
3scape · 16/11/2021 19:15

I used to keep my bank card behind my I'd card in my lanyard so I could tap and go for lunch purchases as I don't do handbags. But after work I'd always leave it in the car.

peboh · 16/11/2021 19:17

I always ended up forgetting I had mine on when I'd finished work, and usually did my food shop after.
I didn't do it purposefully to advertise where I work, as quite frankly I can't imagine people looking closely enough at me to see that information.

mamaandbabas · 16/11/2021 19:20

Find this very odd too OP. Personally think they are too lazy to take it off or it makes them feel important wearing it. Once saw a woman wearing her work uniform and lanyard all night on a Friday night out of the pub.

Thatwithbellson · 16/11/2021 19:25

I work in the local primary school. I don’t know why I would remove it when popping to the shops on the way home? I don’t intend on doing anything disreputable while buying bread and milk and I bump into half the parents from the school in the shop anyway so if I needed to keep my identity a secret, I’d shop elsewhere. If I lost it, however, whoever found it would have instant access to a school full of children so on balance, probably best I do wear it to avoid it falling out of my bag etc. Never really thought about it though- is there some unspoken rule on the slovenliness of keeping a lanyard on that has passed me by?

Eleganz · 16/11/2021 19:28

Your lanyard usually has your name and your employer's details on it. So any random in the shop now knows what you are called and where you work. With that info they might well be able to find out where you live and so on.

My employer actually advises people to remove their lanyards when they leave for the day as a matter of security during their induction.

Pelsall116 · 16/11/2021 19:32

Tend to WFH these days but when I was office based I tended to fit in a quick supermarket run at lunchtimes between the meeting last thing in the morning and the next meeting early afternoon; plus the card hanging from the lanyard was needed to get back into the building anyway. I didn't have the time to worry about taking the thing off and putting it back on.
