Why do people wear their work lanyards in the supermarket

Am I the only one that finds this odd? Lots of people seem to do this in one of my local supermarkets, mainly women of a certain age. Sometimes clearly identifying where they work. I always zip mine away in a pocket of my bag.

OP posts:

It's never even occurred to me to remove it. Why is it so hard to believe that people forget they are wearing their lanyards?

I forget I'm wearing my cardigan - I don't need it in the supermarket but i wouldn't suddenly remove it.

I'm not sure what the relevance is of being able to see where you work. Many people wear branded uniforms, are they supposed to go home, get changed, then pop back out for milk?

Smuuuurfette · 16/11/2021 19:47

99% of the time I forget I’m wearing it

lovingmysummer · 16/11/2021 19:47

I used to pop it down my jumper when I left the office but now I don't bother. So my reason is I'm lazy.

Bangolads · 16/11/2021 19:48

No one cares but you it would seem 🤦🏼‍♀️

Empressofthemundane · 16/11/2021 19:49

Tired, busy, absent minded?

pollymere · 16/11/2021 19:52

I'm lucky if I remember to take it off when I go to bed 😂

Elsielouise13 · 16/11/2021 19:55

Because I love how it colour coordinates with my work shoes, complements my eyes and loudly shouts to all who care to squint at my chest ‘just how I important I am’…

Not.

gunnersgold · 16/11/2021 20:05

Because my neck is like my bag, I carry stuff around it .
Literally though who gives a shit 🙄🙄

Etonmessisyum · 16/11/2021 20:19

Can’t say I’ve noticed, I’ve seen people wearing them in the playground but wouldn’t look close enough know what the persons name is or where they work I don’t really care either. I have an id badge for work (nurse on ward) but it’s clipped to my pocket, can’t stand seeing staff with them dangling in kids faces etc and we have no pocket on tunic chest to put it in. Mine gets wiped down and put in bag at end of my shift.

mommybear1 · 16/11/2021 20:23

Or they are on a break, or they have just left work or who cares 🤷🏻‍♀️ does it matter?

notbloodylikely · 16/11/2021 20:38

Maybe now we can have a mumsnet lanyard users’ club. Like Mini drivers wave at each other? We could tip each other a wink perhaps. Or a ‘certain age’ squint?

Overtired201984 · 16/11/2021 20:41

@FromMumToMeAgain

I keep one. just for supermarket shopping, from my old job of 12 years ago with a special card I had made in it with job title of ‘Chief Executive’ in big letters. Makes me feel so important so people wouldn’t guess I’m a SAHM within nothing to do but lounge on the sofa and eat crisps all day Wink.
This is HILLAROUS , Love it !!! What a legend 🤣🤣🤣
Firstinlastout · 16/11/2021 20:42

Ha ha watched a punk band in October singing about this very thing, song was called Lanyard Wankers!Grin

itsallgoingpearshaped · 16/11/2021 20:43

ODFO, OP. 'Women of a certain age' ... ffs. Get a life.

BoredZelda · 16/11/2021 20:44

Because my husband doesn’t have a handbag to put his in and if it fell out of his pocket into the wrong hands, there could be a national security incident.

JoeMaplin · 16/11/2021 20:45

I have to wear mine out and about as need to be identified for visits to clients and when out and about training clients.. Im out all the time, often stop at supermarkets to use the loo. Im hardly going to take it on and off just to go in the shop! Also I sometimes wear work branded clothing or high vis so the badge and lanyard are the least of my worries.

HeronLanyon · 16/11/2021 20:48

firstin that made me feel I’d gone back to the early 80s. Love it.

Bebethany · 16/11/2021 20:51

@ SplodgeWaddler I find this bizarre that you’ve taken the time to post this, it’s ridiculous?

CaptainChannel · 16/11/2021 21:06

I often pop to the supermarket after work. I don't take off my lanyard. Tbh I don't like to take it off before I get home because I have a particular place for it at home so it doesn't get lost. If I start taking it off in cars and supermarkets and stuffing it in pockets or bags I'll never find it.
If I go on a non working day I obviously don't wear my work lanyard.
It's weird that you've even noticed this.

Bleachmycloths · 16/11/2021 21:11

They forget they’re wearing them.

ItsAlwaysThere · 16/11/2021 21:13

@3scape

I used to keep my bank card behind my I'd card in my lanyard so I could tap and go for lunch purchases as I don't do handbags. But after work I'd always leave it in the car.
Genius!
Sidehustle99 · 16/11/2021 21:20

Because us women of a certain age need them to remember our names and where we work!Confused

Summerrain123 · 16/11/2021 22:03

Because when you get to a certain age, you don't give a crap about what people think. It's very liberating. It wouldn't even occur to me to take mine off until I took the rest of my work outfit off. How odd that it bothers you.

welliesarefuntowear · 16/11/2021 22:11

I like to wear mine because it has a cheeky accent colour against my nylon workwear blouse. It looks tres chic. So I make sure I'm in Tesco dressed like this. Not because I've done 10 hours at work and looking for a microwave meal and some bog roll before home.

Drivingslowtosavefuel · 16/11/2021 22:17

We have a rule that we must remove ours as we leave the building, for security reasons (unlikely IMO, but they think there is a small risk of wearers being targeted for violence if people dislike the organisation)
