Why do people wear their work lanyards in the supermarket

SplodgeWaddler · 15/11/2021 17:45

Am I the only one that finds this odd? Lots of people seem to do this in one of my local supermarkets, mainly women of a certain age. Sometimes clearly identifying where they work. I always zip mine away in a pocket of my bag.

@StarlightLady

If it has your name clearly on it, your name is visible to all, it can lead to stalking issues. Society should not be like this, I quite agree but that is another matter.
Luckily us women of a certain age are largely invisible, so unlikely to be even noticed, let alone stalked....

My pet hate is people using the word lanyard when they mean ID card. The lanyard is just the fabric strap.

You have a point there. Is like when people were on about lanyards to exempt you from wearing masks. There was no lanyard that did that... it was the card at the end.

Women of a certain age are usually "unseen". People look through them because they are no longer valuable, usually barren and struggle to focus through the mist of hot flushes and mood swings.

How nice of you to notice us. When you join our club you'll know why lanyards are such an important accessory.

AnGofsMum · 16/11/2021 22:55

ODFOD!
What ‘certain age’? I’m 42 and often wear mine out and about, either because I forget I’m wearing it as I’m so used to wearing it all day at work, or because I don’t want to get into the habit of taking it off and leaving it in different places because it is important for my work and I would be in the shit without it.
I am not trying to impress anyone in the supermarket or even caring what other people think of me whilst I do my shopping.

cazzy71 · 16/11/2021 22:56

Wow. I tend to be busy finding vegan products, eco packaging and sugar free jams to notice such horrible people innocently displaying a name bagde.
( Checking lanyard - Oh no, panic mode, someone buying vegetarian dog food may now have a bit of plastic showing my head and work place in there trolley)

h2obaby · 16/11/2021 23:04

Why does this even register as a thought op ? Definitely need a hobby

shinynewapple21 · 16/11/2021 23:04

Because they have nipped into the supermarket during their lunch break and couldn't be bothered to remove it ?

Not me BTW - mine is always removed before going out in public - but that's just because of where I work .

ChampionOfTheSun · 16/11/2021 23:05

When I was 19-25 (an uncertain age) I had a lanyard that I had to wear for work with my till fob and certain pub keys on. I wouldn't take it off till I got home (10 minute walk) in case I lost it/them. I did sometimes shop in said lanyard and people did always ask me where I worked because of it, I had no idea I was being offensive with it. Wink I now have a lanyard with some ID on for my voluntary work role but that I do only wear whilst at work, else my toddler will destroy it. Grin

Is there any subject where it's not possible to mention one is a vegan 😂😂

First rule of Vegan Club, tell everyone about Vegan Club.

THEDEACON · 17/11/2021 02:09

Why does it matter to you ?

Whereismumhiding3 · 17/11/2021 02:23

Work lanyard is not an important accessory nor deliberately worn into supermarket. FGS people who are suggesting it is some kind of reminder we work or have value. It's far more basic a reason people leave it on.... because they were eating it at work and have just left work. Lanyard IDs are used for access in and out of work and through the day...

Those of us that leave it ion during lunchbreak pop out to shops or straight after work shopping on way home, haven't removed it yet because WE WILL LOSE IT and not be able to get back in- if we take it off and forget where we put it- we simply have a routine when we get home from work or go to work in the mornings to take it or to put it on, as it will live in one place in our hallway pot when taken off Smile

It's simples

That's why you don't see us wearing it at weekend. Smile

safariboot · 17/11/2021 02:25

@KittenKong

Because mine is a pretty suffragette coloured one and I like it.

Plus I need it to get in and out of the building and it’s a pain in the backside to rifle through my bag or pockets when my hands are full.

This make sense. I take mine off if I leave the office, but I don't need it for building entry. Also earlier this year a client assaulted one of my colleagues then returned with his friends to cause more trouble, so I'd rather not be any more identifiable than I already am.
Coffeeonmytoffee · 17/11/2021 03:00

I forget I’ve got it on!
The pain of losing it isn’t worth leaving it in the car - it takes ages to get a new one.
I forget.
Mostly I forget I’m wearing it.

Stigsmother · 17/11/2021 03:08

We're not allowed to have ours on show. It goes in the drawer at the end of the day

jentinquarantino20 · 17/11/2021 04:44

I only ever took mine off when I got home to get changed. It’s not a big deal.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 17/11/2021 04:49

@maddy68

Because I will lose mine if it doesn't go back in the right place at home
Ditto!
sofato5miles · 17/11/2021 04:50

Oh OP, you have cheered me up. In today's world that someone can have such a petty (and arguably sexist and ageist) thought AND then post on mumsnet reminds me how crackers Joe Public can really be.

Normal life is almost back

PupInAPram · 17/11/2021 04:55

Woman of a certain age, historically known as witches. Coming from the exact same hateful place in the modern brain I'm afraid.

Raffles1981 · 17/11/2021 06:10

I bought a retractable clip holder and when i leave work I clip to my bag.
I'm 40
