To get a fucking huge bed?

I'm about to move to icu and I've been told I'll be doing night permanently for 4 months, 4 nights at once mom-Thursday. That's fine with me it's a bit more money, but we've just moved into a new house and we've got the worst bed ever. It's an 'occasional double' so bloody tiny. I hate it. We stayed in my in-laws spare room recently and it was heavenly. A king size bed from John Ryan by design which honestly felt like sleeping on a cloud.

So coming back to now. I've measured up and it would be doable to put a superking size zip and link bed in our room, but I'd have to lose my bedside table. I'm thinking of saying it could be our Christmas present to each other Blush a night where we don't wake each other up and kick each other repeatedly!

Would you if you could? It would be amazing but Will I miss my table? It has no drawers so I'm not losing storage, it has an Alexa, a lamp and a cup on it 99% of the time and my neom well-being pod. I do have a very low and deep window sill near by too though so maybe I could just put it all there?

We have a 7ft square bed, so much space - best thing ever! We have no bedside tables or other furniture, just a wall of fitted wardrobes.

tillytoodles1 · 02/12/2021 21:27

Do it. I'm a widow but still sleep in our king size bed on my own. When I stay at my daughter's house I sleep in a double bed and that feels a bit cramped.

BarelySurviving · 02/12/2021 21:43

I currently have a standard double, which I share with my partner who is 6'7, and we often co-sleep with our daughter who is 10 months old. Mine and my partner's arses are usually hanging off either side of our bed while our daughter is spread out and enjoying as much space as she wants! I plan on treating us to a super king eventually, sounds like heaven to me, but at the moment there's always more important things that need buying. We used to have a king size a long time ago, but downsized for our previous place... now we have more than enough room in our current house! So enjoy your new bed, I think it's worth every penny. Nothing unreasonable about it.

Fwiw, we only have one bedside table because there used to be a moses basket instead by the other side of the bed. I bought a bedside caddy that hangs onto the bed frame for storing things in on one side instead of a bedside table, which is so practical and handy. If you don't already, you can get one and slot in water bottles, books, phones, glasses, etc.

I have a very tall DH and our king wasn't cutting it. We've got a super king and it's the best thing we ever did! I can roll over (5 times) to cuddle with him and then roll away and sleep!

@dontletthemugglesgetyoudownn

The update that I'm sure absolutely no one is interested in.. the bed is here and it is amazing!!! I hope the dogs, DH and I can all now sleep without touching each other. Although tbh I don't think the older dog can jump on it as it's very high!!!

Honestly though it's like sleeping in a hotel bed!

Feedback tomorrow please Grin
Allthatglittersandgold · 02/12/2021 21:58

I don't know how a couple sleeps soundly in anything other that a superking. I think we need to go bigger actually.

Hurray, hurray! I am so glad for you!

High is good; it's easier to get in and out of a high bed. Does it have space underneath for storage? If it does, get several small containers, because they are easier to get out than big ones. And label the blessed things so you don't have to get four out before you find what you were looking for.

Just saw this thread, congratulations!

We bought a ridiculously expensive euro king when we got married from AndSoToBed (5'9" rather than 6'). We loved it, but then changed to a super king a few years ago. Those 3" make all the difference.

I love the fact that DH can roll over and breathe in my direction, and I'm not face to face with him. I do still have a spare pillow that I can erect as a wall if needed. Sometimes I reach out to check he is still there (often disappears to another room), and I have to reach across the full extend of no mans land before touching him.

Unfortunately the slats on my side have started to go a bit (I'm too fat, I suspect), and it does feel like I am sinking into a shallow grave on my side of the bed. Ikea does slats which will fit, but they don't have them in stock for another week. I think I'm starting to quite enjoy sinking down into the depths of the bed.

WRT duvets - we used to have a winter / summer duvet which consisted of 2 duvets that can clip together. Instead, we had took a duvet each, and bought multiples of sets of sheets. We recently reverted back to a shared duvet, which does feel a little bit more intimate.

RandomMess · 02/12/2021 22:34

Happy sleeping!

If I let my dog on the bed she wants to touch me 🙄 hence she is in a crate and the cats shut away downstairs!!

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 02/12/2021 22:38

We have a super king with separate single duvets and love it. Only downside is staying away from home in something smaller is rubbish.

@dontletthemugglesgetyoudownn So glad you are updating and woohoo that the bed has arrived. Please update tomorrow. This thread has inspired me, and we’re now seriously thinking about buying a bigger bed too 🛏😴💤
Mrsmch123 · 02/12/2021 22:57

I couldn't go back to a "normal" bed now. I've had my super king for about 5 years. I contemplated getting a smaller one when I had my baby back in July because of cot space and being able to shuffle up the side but decided against it and husband just climbs up from the bottom.

Helpstopthepain · 02/12/2021 23:01

I work nights and upgraded our bed because of it. I adore our bed. It is a humongous marshmallow.
It’s my best friend.
My bedside table only really houses perfume, an eye mask and night cream. I could do without them if I had to.

AlbertCampion · 02/12/2021 23:27

We got a super king a couple of years ago and I love it soooo much. Can I ask those who have separate duvets - do you each have doubles, or will singles do? I am currently menopausal and alternate between tossing and turning and sweating buckets, so separate duvets might be the answer for us!

GaslighterDenier · 02/12/2021 23:32

Hope it's as lovely as you wished OP! We have an emperor bed and I would sell a limb before I got a smaller bed Xmas Blush

saltinesandcoffeecups · 02/12/2021 23:33

We bought a nice set of wooden stairs so or sickly dog could get into bed, we sadly lost her and we’re going to move the stairs but looked around at our cats of various ages and figured we’d leave them.

Congratulations a new bed is a wonderful thing.

HeatingOnHeatingOff · 02/12/2021 23:40

This is our super king. We have only had it a week. Dh doesn’t like it as he says he feels too far away from me. It is like being in a bed on your own.

To get a fucking huge bed?
Gertie75 · 02/12/2021 23:43

Hopefully you're sound asleep now in your new big bed.

We bought a kingsize this year and I love it, we started off with a kingsize duvet too but firstly the covers were hard to find, I could see sets I loved but they often didn't do the king, secondly I hated changing them because it was heavy and thirdly dh used to annoy me when he rolled over and let cool air in.

We now have two singles, it took a couple of nights to get used to it because I must have got into the habit of pulling it when I rolled over so with the single it meant I created a gap behind me but I now roll over easily and keep covered, we've had different types too, dh had a 10tog microfiber one and I've got a lovely 13.5 feather one.

DancinOnTheCeiling · 02/12/2021 23:57

@AlbertCampion we have IKEA singles. I think they’re slightly bigger than normal singles. We have different togs as well (my duvet is thinner than DH’s) which works well.

Offmyfence · 03/12/2021 03:44

@TuftyMarmoset

What puts me off is the struggle to put on a duvet cover any bigger than a double!
Get two singles, it's worth it!

We have a super king which I'm unable to sleep in right now and while it's amazing it makes me very picky about going away anywhere which has anything smaller!

We have an ultra luxury mattress too, and a goose down topper 😊

AlbertCampion · 03/12/2021 07:23

Thanks Dancing! Smile

MaryShelley1818 · 03/12/2021 10:05

Well done on your new bed!!
We have a Super King and I absolutely love it! We all have big beds in this house though, DS age 3 and DD age 10mths both have a small double each.

TurquoiseDress · 03/12/2021 10:07

YANBU

Do it!

I'd love to get a Super Kingsize one day! once we get a bigger bedroom/house...
