To get a fucking huge bed?

I'm about to move to icu and I've been told I'll be doing night permanently for 4 months, 4 nights at once mom-Thursday. That's fine with me it's a bit more money, but we've just moved into a new house and we've got the worst bed ever. It's an 'occasional double' so bloody tiny. I hate it. We stayed in my in-laws spare room recently and it was heavenly. A king size bed from John Ryan by design which honestly felt like sleeping on a cloud.

So coming back to now. I've measured up and it would be doable to put a superking size zip and link bed in our room, but I'd have to lose my bedside table. I'm thinking of saying it could be our Christmas present to each other Blush a night where we don't wake each other up and kick each other repeatedly!

Would you if you could? It would be amazing but Will I miss my table? It has no drawers so I'm not losing storage, it has an Alexa, a lamp and a cup on it 99% of the time and my neom well-being pod. I do have a very low and deep window sill near by too though so maybe I could just put it all there?

Superking is amazing and I have no regrets about how much space it takes in my room, you'll love it!! Husband and I have our own duvets as well and it's bliss! 😊

Katieandthekids · 12/11/2021 07:31

We have a super king size. It's the best thing. Go for it.

Katieandthekids · 12/11/2021 07:32

@dontletthemugglesgetyoudownn

How thick am I? A fucking shelf!!! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ right I'm ordering it!
🤣
hidinginquote · 12/11/2021 07:34

Good for you OP, you won't regret it! Apart from whenever you go and sleep somewhere smaller than a super king!

dworky · 12/11/2021 07:34

Definitely do it, we spend a third of our lives in bed so comfort is of utmost importance.
You can always get a small hinged shelf at the side of the bed if you miss the cabinet.

EventOfTheSeason · 12/11/2021 07:37

I'd have suggested a king but then you mentioned the dogs, so yes I think it will be amazing and you'll just get used to less floor space.
I'm excited for you as someone who is patiently awaiting a new sofa after a few months of 3 of us on a 2 seater.

Svalberg · 12/11/2021 08:05

We have a reading light that clips onto the headboard, from IKEA, saves lamp space elsewhere

Pottedpalm · 12/11/2021 08:25

Best thing you will ever do! We have a superking, one quilt. Changing the cover is a bit of an effort but we do it together and have perfected our strategy.
I won’t stay in hotels with less than king beds; if that’s impossible we go for twin beds. It always amazes me how many tv dramas depict couples in a standard double, so cramped unless you are sylph like.
And yes to the shelf!

Peacocking · 12/11/2021 08:31

100% good move. You'll spend waaaymore time lying down in your bedroom than standing up so bed space is more important 😁

I put up little ornamental sconces on the wall either side of the bed, just big enough for a little £7 brass lamp from b&q ), drink and a phone charger.

I absolutely love my bed, despite having to tip-toe around it while heating in. Also, get a thick memory foam mattress topper two or three inches deep and a really lovely duvet. It's like sleeping on a giant cloud. Bliss.

middleager · 12/11/2021 08:37

I really regret getting our SK bed 10 years ago.
It is the best bed ever, so comfy, no signs of the amazing mattress going.
Unfortunately....

It takes up so much space. I can't have proper bedsidr tables, or a wardrobe. It's a pain to change and dry the big sheets, some of them ping off. The mattress is so chunky that my nice SK heated mattress cover pings off etc. But the damn bed keeps on going and we can't justify changing it for a more practical double or king.

Noodleted · 12/11/2021 08:39

Do it! We have a king but no pets. It's brilliant. The John Ryan by design mattresses are amazing too. Only thing to note is that they are super thick so you need to get deep fitted sheets. We've also got some of those elastic things that go underneath to stop the sheet coming off.

Peacocking · 12/11/2021 08:42

(Pro-tip...write T and S in permanent marker on the edges of the superking duvet to denote sides and top. The lengths are just a little bit different. It will save you much future frustration when putting duvet covers on)

Yes!!
If we could squeeze a bigger bed in our room I would.

Lorw · 12/11/2021 08:50

Do it. You spend half your life sleeping, it’s worth the investment.

CottonSock · 12/11/2021 08:50

We ditched headboards and have the lights elsewhere in room on a remote control switch. It's nothing fancy this remote, just a socket switch.

LolaButt · 12/11/2021 08:58

Check this out for decadence. I sleep in a SK…. alone!

You’ll never look back OP!

incognitodorrito · 12/11/2021 09:00

I spilt with my DH last year abs the first thing I bought was an emperor sized bed to accommodate me, DD, DS and D dog. The room would look so much bigger without the bed but I don’t care and it makes me smile every night ! D Dog has also been relegated downstairs and kids have own beds now but it was lovely the first few months to all cuddle together and get used to our new home and life.

Bagelsandbrie · 12/11/2021 09:01

We have a huge bed in a small room. Dh has skinnier legs than me so has about 4-6ins to squeeze in round the edge on his side…! He doesn’t need a bedside table but I have a little shelf attached to the wall on my side. We love our bed- ours is from Warren Evans and it’s the best thing I’ve ever treated myself to!

incognitodorrito · 12/11/2021 09:06

Forgot to add, ours is a Hypnos divan bed, it even has a safe hidden in the base. They are normally £££££ but I found an exdisplay model on eBay.

Houseofvelour · 12/11/2021 09:07

I love my superking. It's been a game changer!
We got one with a TV in it for extra luxury and curling up in a comfy bed with a cup of tea and GBBO is just amazing! Do it!!

TuftyMarmoset · 12/11/2021 09:14

What puts me off is the struggle to put on a duvet cover any bigger than a double!

TotallySuper · 12/11/2021 09:19

We have a superking, you don't need a zip link one unless you choose to and normal superking size bedding and duvet fit perfectly. I would never get a smaller bed now. Enjoy!

1stTimeMama · 12/11/2021 09:22

Get it! We have a king sized bed, and are looking at getting a new frame when we redecorate our bedroom. My husband, who I believe took leave of his senses for a moment, suggested we get a SMALLER bed, as wouldn't it be nice and cosy?!
I'm sure the look on my face said it all, but i made sure there was no uncertainty by saying absolutely no way will we be doing that. If anything, we should consider a bigger one!

BashfulClam · 12/11/2021 09:25

Do it! I love our new super king, it feels like we are sleeping in different postcodes! We get bedding from next (I just like their quality but it is expensive).
