To get a fucking huge bed?

I'm about to move to icu and I've been told I'll be doing night permanently for 4 months, 4 nights at once mom-Thursday. That's fine with me it's a bit more money, but we've just moved into a new house and we've got the worst bed ever. It's an 'occasional double' so bloody tiny. I hate it. We stayed in my in-laws spare room recently and it was heavenly. A king size bed from John Ryan by design which honestly felt like sleeping on a cloud.

So coming back to now. I've measured up and it would be doable to put a superking size zip and link bed in our room, but I'd have to lose my bedside table. I'm thinking of saying it could be our Christmas present to each other Blush a night where we don't wake each other up and kick each other repeatedly!

Would you if you could? It would be amazing but Will I miss my table? It has no drawers so I'm not losing storage, it has an Alexa, a lamp and a cup on it 99% of the time and my neom well-being pod. I do have a very low and deep window sill near by too though so maybe I could just put it all there?

We have a superking, right now me, my husband, my six year old, the cat and a stuffed dinosaur are in it. We all have room without squishing the person near us.

SoyIglesiasPiggle · 12/11/2021 05:52

Good for you OP! We went super king over a decade ago and it was a revelation! Two adults and four cats fit quite well Smile
We have one duvet, and it’s a king size - that seems plenty big enough for us (I don’t like it reaching down to the floor on either side of the bed, and my DH tends to run hot anyway).

Enjoy your new bed!

Mummyoflittledragon · 12/11/2021 06:08

The Germans have superking or larger, ie 2m beds. We bought our superking 20 years ago. A 90 cm mattress is a must Imo

Mummyoflittledragon · 12/11/2021 06:11

Oh and one superking duvet. But it’s a pia to change, as are two smaller duvets. You can get slightly wider single duvet covers from IKEA, which are pretty ideal. 150 cm wide rather than 135 cm.

MWNA · 12/11/2021 06:13

I gave up my bedside table to have a super king. I'd hate to be without such a big bed. Can easily do without the table.

ElaineLovesJerry · 12/11/2021 06:19

In ikea I've seen picture , the really narrow ones used as a bedside table.

ElaineLovesJerry · 12/11/2021 06:22

Picture shelves that should say.

Like this.
I'm on the app though so you may only be able to see it if you are on the app.

I brought a king sized bed just for me and some very decent white company bed linen. It's heaven sometimes I just go and lie on my bed and read. I have a storage headboard from IKEA and it's the best thing since sliced bread

EsmeraldaFudge · 12/11/2021 06:27

We have a super king and I couldn't sleep in anything smaller now. If we go away I have to check the size of the bed as anywhere booked with a double has been a nightmare as neither of us can sleep.

purplesequins · 12/11/2021 06:29

do it!

we have a european double (200x190cm) with 2 single matresses. and single bedding each.

it's bliss! well worth it imo.

we got pouches like this instead of bedside tables.

PooWillyNameChange · 12/11/2021 06:29

We recently invested in a superking with hypnos mattress (excuse magnolia and carpets, moved into a probate and haven't renovated!) So much better but already it just seems normal and I wish we'd got an emperor (although sheets would've been a fortune!)

Warblerinwinter · 12/11/2021 06:32

Another bedside table thought…do you have space at bottom of your bed? If so pull head of bed around 15-20 cm from wall and put shelf behind headboard . It works really well as bedside table

SexyNeckbeard · 12/11/2021 06:37

I love my super king! You won't regret it at all.

If you do get one superking duvet when you need to change the cover, lay the quilt out on the bed with the lines going horizontally not vertically like you do with a smaller duvet, then put the cover on. It fits much better in the covers

myheartskippedabeat · 12/11/2021 06:39

@dontletthemugglesgetyoudownn

I hope by the time I type this it's already on order!!!
I'd totally be ordering one!

fluffythedragonslayer · 12/11/2021 06:40

Ooh I love our super king bed. DH and I have seperate duvets, and a pillow wall between us so I barely know he is there 😂

UniversalAunt · 12/11/2021 06:42

Big bed is best.

Upgrading from a small double to a standard king size has brought marital harmony, better sleep & reduction in aches & pains in no time at all. Worth every penny & every grunt/shove to manoeuvre the mattress up the stairs & into the bedroom.

I have lost my bedside table to gain the space & now have an end of bed unit - far away from my toes - which is OK for coffee cup etc & am considering getting one of these:

www.waterstones.com/product/waterstones-navy-felt-bedside-caddy/0612615107557

King size is 150cm wide, do you need super king?
Whatever, just yourselves a bigger bed - worth every penny.

UniversalAunt · 12/11/2021 06:44

@purplesequins Ooh, thanks for the Amazon URL. Looks better & cheaper than Waterstones offer.

maddiemookins16mum · 12/11/2021 06:56

Welcome to the world of a good nights sleep.

I was going to suggest a storage headboard, or shelf next to the bed like Elaine posted or a shelf running above the headboard. A good bed is a life changing thing. I also think John Ryan by design blew my mind when I was looking for a bed 8 or 9 years ago. They cut open a branded mattress to show you how crap it was inside. I found their website invaluable for choosing a mattress.

When we moved to this house we changed our 5ft bed to a superking zip and link bed and have loved this bed. We just have a superking duvet on ours but we have always had a superking duvet even on the 5ft, feels far more generous. We went to a local bed factory and had a mattress custom made to our requirements, ie the right support and not getting too hot, we were really knowledgeable thanks to John Ryan.

@agteacht our friend is 6'7" so yes he has a bed that was custom made to fit his length but had to get custom bedding made, duvet, duvet cover plus sheets. It wasn't as expensive as I thought it would be but was tricky to source 30 years ago. These days it is so much easier to do online. There are companies specifically for big beds that come with mattresses 7' x 7' etc and they sell the bedding too.

UniversalAunt · 12/11/2021 07:00

Have tried two memory mattresses of different grades - just don’t like them, too soft, too hot.

Booked ourselves a day out at a local mattress store, tried out every non-memory mattress on display, took notes as we went along & scored against four criteria:

how it felt as we lay down;
ease of turning over;
ease of getting out of bed;
aware of other one getting in & out of bed.

Had lunch, then went back to double check our preferences.
Placed order in full confidence that we’d got what suited us.
Got a king size non-memory 1400 spring orthopedic mattress from John Lewis on discount.

Worth every penny.

OM82 · 12/11/2021 07:01

A definite yes to two duvets from me. I spent a lot of time living in Europe where it's totally normal. So much better for not disturbing each other in your sleep. We just have two singles as find that's big enough for us, also makes drying and changing them less of a faff! We like different temperatures and I have down, he has synthetic so good to pick your own one.

ThirdElephant · 12/11/2021 07:03

YANBU, OP. I posted a similar thread a few months back and was told to get a super king. I did and it was the best decision! We've got two little rugrats and all four of us can sleep in the super king comfortably.

Roselilly36 · 12/11/2021 07:05

We have a SuperKing bed, on our second now, had SK since DS1, so 20years. Lots of SK bedding available now, we got a lovely Duvet from JL. Bedding from Dunelm, doesn’t break the bank, decent enough quality, however I wouldn’t recommend there fitted sheets Sainsbury’s are better quality and don’t go bobbly like the Dunelm ones. Enjoy.

Tobeornottobe13 · 12/11/2021 07:07

Hi OP! Which model did you go for in the John Ryan range? I am jealous and want one too!! Grin

LeavesOnTreez · 12/11/2021 07:10

Super king will transform your life!

We were given a super king bed frame as our wedding gift from PIL over 20 years ago so only had to choose the right mattress. We’re on our second mattress, but the game changer for us was a dual control heated blanket for the winter along with 800 thread count duvet covers.

Hotel beds just never measure up to our own - but that’s the way it should be as we spend the most time in our homes.

Enjoy!!! Blissful sleep is so valuable!!
