To get a fucking huge bed?

I'm about to move to icu and I've been told I'll be doing night permanently for 4 months, 4 nights at once mom-Thursday. That's fine with me it's a bit more money, but we've just moved into a new house and we've got the worst bed ever. It's an 'occasional double' so bloody tiny. I hate it. We stayed in my in-laws spare room recently and it was heavenly. A king size bed from John Ryan by design which honestly felt like sleeping on a cloud.

So coming back to now. I've measured up and it would be doable to put a superking size zip and link bed in our room, but I'd have to lose my bedside table. I'm thinking of saying it could be our Christmas present to each other Blush a night where we don't wake each other up and kick each other repeatedly!

Would you if you could? It would be amazing but Will I miss my table? It has no drawers so I'm not losing storage, it has an Alexa, a lamp and a cup on it 99% of the time and my neom well-being pod. I do have a very low and deep window sill near by too though so maybe I could just put it all there?

I'd absolutely go for it if you could guarantee your other half would stay on their side. Mine wouldn't, no matter how big the bed. I woke up the other night to find him sharing my pillow!

@TuftyMarmoset

What puts me off is the struggle to put on a duvet cover any bigger than a double!
I struggled at first but now it's easy! You lay the quilt out horizontally instead of vertically in front of you. Turn the cover inside out, put your arms inside and grab the two top corners. Grab the furthest away quilt corner and pull the cover down - having someone else to help or using quilt clips is easiest here. Then the quilt is inside, the cover is the right way round, and all you have to do is give it a good shake and fasten it up. It takes me about a minute to put it on if I'm alone, 30 seconds if I have help.

Now you too can have a superking Grin

that's why we have two singles. much easier to change (and wash and dry) than even a double. plus no drafty middle channel. and no duvet hogging.
idontlikealdi · 12/11/2021 09:32

Why on earth have you got an 'occasional double'?! Get the biggest one you can for, it's worth it!

I've not really noticed a difference tbh.

@1stTimeMama

Get it! We have a king sized bed, and are looking at getting a new frame when we redecorate our bedroom. My husband, who I believe took leave of his senses for a moment, suggested we get a SMALLER bed, as wouldn't it be nice and cosy?! I'm sure the look on my face said it all, but i made sure there was no uncertainty by saying absolutely no way will we be doing that. If anything, we should consider a bigger one!
LTB, the mere suggestion Grin

@Tobeornottobe13 I got one of the clearance mattresses, the 1500 artisan one zip and link superking. Should have been 1650 for 800. :)

dontletthemugglesgetyoudownn · 12/11/2021 10:03

I went for zip and link because we live in a tenement flat, not a chance is a super king full size mattress getting up all those stairs 😂. I think the delivery bloke would cry

EstuaryBird · 12/11/2021 10:06

I’ve got a John Ryan superking which is actually 2 x 3 foot mattresses. It’s the best thing I ever did. I don’t even know if DH is in the bed or not 😂.

InconvenientPeg · 12/11/2021 10:11

We have a superking frame, and a zip and link mattress (awkward stairs and I was hoping he'd disturb me less). And a superking duvet each!

We're just about to buy new duvet covers and DH wants to go matchy, but previously we just used what we had.

grapewine · 12/11/2021 10:31

I live alone and have a super king. I won't go back.

TealSapphire · 12/11/2021 10:55

I have one and it's fan-bloody-tastic. Takes up most of my bedroom, was the biggest I could find. Easily fits me and a kid or two, three cats and a dog. Or just me.

TowandaForever · 12/11/2021 11:10

@TheLeadbetterLife

Superking beds are just fantastic. We recently got separate mattresses and linen for ours as well, because my husband is a terrible fidget and I am a terribly light sleeper. Having separate duvets, like the Germans do, makes a big difference.

I can't bear staying at my in-laws, because they have these stingy double beds with uncomfortable mattresses, despite huge bedrooms. I never get a wink of sleep.

Would buying and taking a mattress topper help?
1stTimeMama · 12/11/2021 12:04

Hmmm, LTB, now, a super king just for me?! There's an idea! I
If only the children didn't keep creeping in with me.....

GrrrlPwr · 12/11/2021 13:53

OP most mattresses arrive rolled up!

GrrrlPwr · 12/11/2021 13:55

And yes to bringing your own topper while staying in an uncomfortable bed, it will help.

I think older generations have much lower expectations of beds maybe?

They stayed in hotels less often and didn't know what they were missing maybe?

After all, the 'small double' is only a UK size!

MagentaRocks · 12/11/2021 14:23

We have recently got one. Haven’t slept in it yet as been doing the room up. It is nearly done. I bought a couple of coverless duvets so I don’t have to struggle putting a cover on.

RavingAnnie · 12/11/2021 22:46

@GrrrlPwr

Yay! Definitely the right decision. We have a superking and do have 2 double duvets. I wrap myself up, so DH gets freezing if we share a duvet. We both get much better sleep. Bedside tables are overrated!
How do you make the bed with two double duvets?
lisaandalan · 12/11/2021 22:51

Yes definitely do it. A decent bed is so important.
My grandad always used to tell us always buy a good bed and a good pair of shoes because if you are not in one, you are in the other. X

FindMeInTheSunshine · 12/11/2021 23:01

One tip: if you get easily disturbed by you OH turning over in the night don't bother zipping the mattresses together, much better without in my opinion!

alfagirl73 · 12/11/2021 23:32

I have a super king all to myself and I LOVE it! Quality sleep is so important - get the best bed you can afford - always!

Same When I moved house my dad was all "if your bed fits then.." Me "IF?! You mean when. If I have to wedge it in with an inch gap, it IS fitting" Grin
dontletthemugglesgetyoudownn · 13/11/2021 00:14

@RavingAnnie so they over lap over over the middle but the bed is so big you don't feel the overlap

Hankunamatata · 13/11/2021 00:18

We got slimline CD units next to the bed which we use as bedside units. Mil attached two shelves to the wall
