No 2 minutes silence at gym. AIBU

I went to my gym today for a class in the swimming pool. I had totally expected the class to finish just before 11am so that those who wanted to could observe the two minutes silence. By 10.55am it was apparent that this was not going to happen so I just took myself out of the pool and sat in the changing room by myself.
So as to not drip feed, I am from a Forces Family and the wrong side of 50! I found this totally disrespectful of the instructor. He could have, at the very least, mentioned that he had intended to not stop before the class. AIBU to be upset by this?

YABU, it isn't mandatory. If it's so important to you why did you go to a class at that time?

Cosyblankets · 11/11/2021 17:56

If I had been the instructor I would have stopped. But I would have mentioned it at the start

Cosyblankets · 11/11/2021 17:57

Tbf it's probably up to the manager I would think all or nothing in a leisure centre

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 11/11/2021 17:57

Baby’s swimming class today didn’t do it either so I have to say I totally forgot and then felt deeply ashamed and sad later about it. I guess if you’re not at work or in an office/near a church it can be possible to forget! I remembered this morning about it but not at 10.59.

FangsForTheMemory · 11/11/2021 17:58

If you're the wrong side of 50, you'll remember that nobody in this country used to observe two minutes' silence except those attending Armistice Day ceremonies. It should be a personal thing.

Hiphopopotamus · 11/11/2021 17:59

I think YABU - people who wish to observe the silence can but it’s not a 3 line whip. You wanted to observe the silence so you did, and those who choose not to could carry on. There are many places and ways to observe Remembrance Day if you choose to and you could have taken the opportunity of any of these

RedHelenB · 11/11/2021 18:00

You have Sunday to observe the silence, there's been silenced at sporting events too. Yabu.

Lemonsyellow · 11/11/2021 18:00

I wouldn’t expect two minutes silence at the gym. In fact, I’d be surprised if they did so.

CupCalamity · 11/11/2021 18:01

I feel the same OP, and I'm not from a Forces family and the other side of 50 to you. Do we really live in such a self centred world that we can't spend 2 minutes thinking of others? So sad. I always observe it, it's really not hard. It should just be a given. In my workplace we all stopped and joined together in the waiting room for it.

Nearthelooplease · 11/11/2021 18:02

You wanted to follow the 2 minutes silence so you removed yourself from the pool to go and sit somewhere quiet to do so. Anyone else who wanted to observe it could have done the same, so I don’t really see what the issue is?

If I had paid for an hour long class I would expect it to run for an hour. It would have been a fair bit shorter than 60 minutes if he’d stopped early enough for everyone to get out of the pool and get dry/dressed in time for 11am.

Our 3/4 years olds did it in Nursery today and did a great job.

icelolly12 · 11/11/2021 18:02

If you wanted two minutes silence that's upto you to organise rather than join a class at that time Hmm some people just love to complain and moan

StarfishDish · 11/11/2021 18:03

@CupCalamity I agree with everything you said. Very disrespectful!
ThePoisonousMushroom · 11/11/2021 18:03

YABU. You can stop and think about those who gave their lives at any time, it doesn’t have to be at a prescribed time. Your thoughts don’t mean any less if they’re at 11.15.
I was driving at 11 so couldn’t really do much thinking, as I was concentrating on driving. I observed a 2 mins silence alone, later in the day.

WheelieBinPrincess · 11/11/2021 18:04

I actually hate enforced silences, I never think about the thing I’m supposed to be thinking about. When we did at school I’m afraid I was more than likely thinking about what was in my lunchbox. When I was older i was probably thinking about if I should open the wine tonight even though it’s only Wednesday or if I turned my hot brush off.

That does NOT mean I don’t care about fallen soldiers or think about them in lots of other ways. I just think when someone says ‘now think about this thing’ it’s quite hard to do.

I have no problem being quiet during it though.

rookiemere · 11/11/2021 18:04

He probably didn't know , it was down to the gym management to tell him and they obviously didn't. I had an awkward training session starting at 11 - there was no way I could notify the organisers but thankfully most of us sat silently until 11.02, so the message must have got through.
I do think though it's not helped by having silences for other things like the NHS - it would be better IMHO to keep the two minutes silence only for it's original purpose.

LiveatCityHall · 11/11/2021 18:05

I have to agree with you op. I was in tesco today and just before 11am they announced they would be observing the 2 minute silence. When it started I looked around the store and everyone I could see had stopped and bowed their heads. It was very respectful.

Lemonsyellow · 11/11/2021 18:05

Lots of people can’t just stop their jobs for two minutes. The fact that they don’t stop doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not thinking of others. In fact, it usually means they are thinking of others - by doing their job. You’d want your surgeon to stop mid-operation?

TreaslakeandBack · 11/11/2021 18:06

YABU. I was at work today wearing my poppy, so busy I didn’t even know when it was 11am.
Isn’t this why remebrance Sunday is a Sunday?

Suzi888 · 11/11/2021 18:06

YANBU but no one seems to care anymore. Generation ❄️ We wouldn’t win a war these days!

ThePoisonousMushroom · 11/11/2021 18:07

Isn’t this why remebrance Sunday is a Sunday?

Exactly.

GrandTheftWalrus · 11/11/2021 18:08

I was in the pub at 11am (getting coffee and breakfast) and they didn't observe it either.

480Widdio · 11/11/2021 18:08

The David Lloyd Club I attend had a two minute silence.....everything stopped.

Libertaire · 11/11/2021 18:09

YABU.

If you wish to observe two minutes silence, carry on. Nobody is stopping you.

Others are free to ignore such public virtue-signalling if they wish.
