To feel so upset by the death of the poor 10 year old boy last night who was killed by a dog in Caerphilly.
My own son was mauled by a dog at 14 months old he has scars but he is here.
I remember the terror and the fear of it when it was happening and i can't help to feel it now knowing that is what that poor little boy went through last night.
His poor family must be going through the worst pain imaginable and i just feel so so sad for them.
I don't know why this case has really hit me but it has.

News update

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-59237518

A 28 year old woman has been arrested and bailed on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury resulting in death, before being released on bail.

Two men were also interviewed voluntarily.

Breed of dog not yet established

Yes, the dog HAS been identified.

And what a shock, it's a pitbull. Hmm

I feel sorry for these dogs tbh. Not their fault, they have feckless, obtuse, useless owners who are using them as a status symbol, and to look 'ard, and who sometimes parade them around in dog fighting contests, and then let them into family homes, where children and babies dwell.

R.I.P Jack Lis. Sad

UpThePodge · 10/11/2021 17:11

There is absolutely no reason I can see to have such a large aggressive dog in a normal family home unless you want to intimidate people
To me that speaks volumes
Throw the book at the owner and the breeder who allowed this to happen, whether he advertised it honestly or not, he should have home checked and vetted them for suitability, or in realality had the dog put to sleep as it was known to be aggressive
That poor boy, a loss of a young life through their irresponsibility
Shame on them

AnguaResurgam · 10/11/2021 17:18

BBC report says

"Gwent Police said work was continuing to identify the breed of the dog, which people locally have claimed was a type of American pit bull"

Abhannmor · 10/11/2021 17:27

Why are we still having this conversation? When our twins were babies we were approaching a guy with a bull terrier on a narrow tow path . My ex turned the buggy so it was facing the fence. It's alright he won't hurt you said its owner. ' But I don't know that ' said my missus. Yes you do cos I just told ya! snarled the cretin. That was the early 90s.

ilovebrie8 · 10/11/2021 17:46

Jeez makes my blood run cold ...a terrifying animal ....why why why was this in a home with kids. An 8 stone beast ...it’s just chilling!! I wouldn’t be responsible for my actions if I was the poor boy’s mother ...

ilovebrie8 · 10/11/2021 17:48

No sane person takes an animal like that in to their home....

Hoppinggreen · 10/11/2021 18:00

The people who bought a Large powerful dog online that was called “Beast” and left 2 boys alone with it should be prosecuted

wolfstarling · 10/11/2021 18:04

Does anyone want to start an online petition to at least have a similar system to Ireland? I am not very good at setting these things up. Ideally these dogs shouldn't be allowed and left with children unattended legally and tougher jail sentences should be handed out.

I just think Jack Lis's life shouldn't be lost without any changes happening to current dangerous dog acts.

Katie2017 · 10/11/2021 18:10

Sounds like the last owner should've had it PTS given it's history or found an extremely experienced owner of this type of dog to take it on with no other pets or children. If new owners only had it a couple weeks shouldn't have been around any one else's child, my guess is the dog was trying to protect the family from what it thought was a threat, extremely tragic.

Not like an adult even being there would've helped, short of having a gun you're not going to be able to stop an attack by one of those dogs.

Nyxly · 10/11/2021 18:16

Knew that dog was going to be rehomed, privately via the Internet.

The original owners should not have rehomed the dog, privately, especially with someone who has kids. If the adults in that house knew, the dog had aggression problems and brought the dog in, they clearly can nor male competent parenting decisions.

Who on earth buys a dog like that off 'some bloke' off the Internet and puts it in a hour with their children.

Bingbong21 · 10/11/2021 18:57

If as a mum I bought a bloke into my home known to be violent who harmed a child I left alone with them my other children would be removed. I hope the child who had to witness this all will get the support they need.

wetotter · 10/11/2021 19:30

There is a heck of a lot of private rehoming going on at the moment, because if the post-pandemic return to work and the cute puppies hitting the terrible dog teens. And people are trying to get back some of the money they spent as prices rocketed.

If you cannot cope with your dog, and especially if it has behavioural problems, then it should always be surrendered to a rescue, not resold. The rescue (if a good one) will then assess the dog and decide what sort of people it can safely be rehomed to (look at the number which specify no children, or only teens and older, or which require experience). The last thing a dog needs is a failed adoption.

The sharp rise in dog ownership is an effect of the pandemic. For most new dog owners, it was the chance to get the long-planned dog whilst they could be at home during the full-on puppy days, with sensible walker/daycare plans for when they return. Others however were acting less responsibly, and dogs aged around 18months with poor behaviour are much more common than ever before.

People who do this, should have their children taken off them, and be forcibly sterilised, and never be allowed to be near a child again.

Yeah, that's what I said. And I mean it. People like this don't deserve to breathe the same air as me.

I rest my case. It's ALWAYS the same type of people who have this same type of dog.

You really can not know that. Believe it or not, some middle class folk like staffies. My neighbours certainly did. They had theirs from a pup.

This.

I knew a retired doctor who had a rescue staffie. The most mild mannered old lady you could imagine.

Funnily enough she'd had a succession of foster dogs and had said she'd take anything except a staffie because of their reputation. One day the rescue told her about a dog who would be just perfect for her, any only mentioned the breed at the end. She took it, and having been converted to the breed, only ever had staffies after that until she eventually went into a nursing home.

lochmaree · 10/11/2021 21:23

@UndertonesOfCake yeah I know someone who owns and runs a horse livery yard, quite middle class, live in the country and built their own house. and she has staffy type dogs. she had two for a while, one of which was a rescue and she said almost went for her a couple of times (I think the dog hadn't expected her to be where she was or something, in her own house) - she also had a tiny baby who obviously turned into a toddler, but didn't seem to see any risk. she then bought a staff type puppy after that one died. I used to keep my horse on that yard and i hated it if that dog was around, it used to growl and snarl at people and was pretty big. other dog owners thought it was a liability.

UndertonesOfCake · 10/11/2021 22:03

The ones the old lady I knew had weren't a liability - they were just lovable old dogs with a tendency to beg for scraps and ask for belly rubs. One was an ex breeding dog that tried to mother any dog smaller than her - like fully grown and thoroughly unimpressed chihuahuas Grin

She did have a foster collie that was a complete liability, but that was adopted by someone who lived rurally (town life really didn't suit it)

If you want a breed that's often a liability - Jack Russells are underrated tbh. Opinionated snappy little things sometimes, though physically relatively easy to overpower.

tallduckandhandsome · 10/11/2021 22:05

@Garfunkle

And in addition to idiots who allow their dog off its lead in public places' don't even get me started on the filthy fuckers who let their dogs SHIT all over public footpaths. Scum they are. Pure scum. Should never be allowed to own a dog

As a dog owner of many years I agree with your statement about filthy dog owners who don’t pick up after their dogs. I feel exactly he same about cat owners who think their cats have a right to crap in other peoples gardens.

I cannot agree that well trained, friendly dogs with excellent recall should not be allowed off lead - ever. What do you regard as “Public spaces”? All dogs should be leashed on main roads. No dogs should be allowed in children’s parks or on sporting fields. I completely agree with that. I see no reason why a well trained, friendly dog with excellent recall should be leashed on a mountain, woodland, forestry, beach or other large green area.

I don’t have a cat or a dog sadly but comparing dogs shitting in the street with cats shitting in people’s gardens is ridiculous. The first is against the rules,, the second isn’t.

Yes, they're all like Princess Anne,

(one of her bull terriers attacked two children in Hyde Park, and another attacked and killed one of the Queen's corgis)

GoIntoTheLight · 10/11/2021 22:31

This is a really distressing story.

I was attacked by a large dog (smaller than that one though) and I'm a strapping, strong person - I was powerless to get away until someone removed it and my injuries were bad enough to need quite a lot of stitches. I can only imagine the horror and fear of that young lad's last moments.

trumpisagit · 10/11/2021 22:37

@wolfstarling
I would definitely sign that petition.
I love (normal) dogs but large dogs are completely unnecessary in residential homes.
They are a danger to children, cats, and (judging by that Wikipedia article) epileptics.
I think the Ireland system sounds good, but what are their stats for people killed by dogs?

trumpisagit · 10/11/2021 22:43

This is the only one I found on Wikipedia for Ireland.
"County Galway, Ireland — Victim had gone to visit her grandchildren and was found face-down in the lane by her daughter-in-law, the dogs' owner. The dogs had a previous history of aggression including puncturing the postman's tyres. A breeding pair of adult dogs, which weighed 43–46 kilograms (95–101 lb), and one of their puppies were involved. Victim sustained broken bones, massive injuries, and died of hemorrhagic shock. The inquest jury endorsed recommendations to add the breed to the list of dangerous or restricted dog breeds, and mandate muzzling, licensing, and training.[35]"
64 year old woman killed by 3 Presa Canario in 2017.
Perhaps the law is effective?

trumpisagit · 10/11/2021 22:46

Or maybe not:

I am so sad about what happened to Jack.
Surely there is more we, as a society, can do to prevent this happening again, and again.
