Has anyone else been watching the snag tights/applicant for social media position debacle? I have no involvement in this but have been watching from the sidelines in utter bafflement and now I don’t know if I’m missing something or if this person is truly reaching in order to take offence

So snag tights were recruiting. This person applied, was asked to do a video interview, said yes and was then not interviewed and when snag came back they said all positions were filled, they’d missed her reply and were but would be back in touch when recruiting again. This person believes it was because snag had looked at their social media and decided they no longer wanted to interview them.

This has erupted on both sides with this person posting on multiple social media sites and snag owner Brie seeming to apologise over and over. Admit a mistake was made and that steps were being put in place to resolve moving forward.

That’s it in a tiny nutshell but there’s so much more now including accusations of doxxing.

Is anyone else been reading? AIBU to think the applicant has taken it too far now and needs to move on?

I don't mind the men in tights ads, but why are they being targeted at women?

What are they really trying to appeal to?

DickMabutt73962 · 07/11/2021 22:44
@PeriChristmas that image is truly hideous.

why oh why would any right thinking woman buy their tights after seeing that? The mind boggles tbh. What hideous marketing
That's a truly hideous comment

SuperDup3r · 07/11/2021 22:53

@DickMabutt73962 is it? I don't think so. What exactly appeals to you about that image and makes you want to buy the tights?

mydogisthebest · 07/11/2021 22:54

@DickMabutt73962 why is it a hideous comment? It's a very true comment for lots of women.

How the hell is that meant to appeal to a woman looking to buy some tights?

Personally if I am going to be buying tights or any article of clothing I want to see it modelled by a woman looking good in said item.

SuperDup3r · 07/11/2021 22:56

It's pure woke theatre. Show me a woman in the tights. Size 8, size 28, I don't care. Black, white, fat or thin. Don't care.

Show me some horrible looking fella with a beard in make up and some weird pants and I feel we are in the realms of fetish

But you do you. You know you're just being woke

DickMabutt73962 · 07/11/2021 23:02

Most of the models on their Instagram are women so I don't see the need to be so disgusted and put off by the way one person looks. I started buying from SNAG because they were the first company that made tights that actually fit fat people like me.

It's funny how them embracing different body types and typical gender-conforming looks can make some people so disgusted that they won't purchase from them. Mumsnet loves to bash on about breaking free from gender norms, except when a man does it in a certain non-approved way.

SuperDup3r · 07/11/2021 23:07

I'm not disgusted by different body types. I'm a chubby size 12 and short with it. You're deliberately missing my point I feel

I am disgusted by horrible looking men in strange pants though. Fetishising women's tights.

I'm surprised you can't see - as a woman - how creepy that marketing is.

SuperDup3r · 07/11/2021 23:09

And the photo montage you've posted there is of larger women in Snag garments. I like that inclusivity. You've left out the photos of the creepy looking men

bestcattoyintheworld · 07/11/2021 23:12

There's no older women on their ads. They all seem to be kwirky 20/30 somethings.

But all of these images are of stereotypically feminine-looking women, all of larger sizes? It's not especially diverse really. There's no gender stereotype destruction at all here - where are the "masc" or butch women? Where are the slimmer women? And yes, fair enough to other posters, men wear tights too!

It just becomes creepy when fetish or overly sexual poses become the main marketing mode. I just want to buy tights.

thebellagio · 08/11/2021 07:44

I bought some tights from there a few weeks ago for the first time. I do love the end product but my first impression on entering the site was that it was a plus size brand only.

It’s fantastic that it’s body diverse but I’m a short, chubby size 12 and I don’t see myself represented in any of their images. it was only really that so many people had advocated for the quality of the products that I made a purchase. If I was looking solely at the site with no prior knowledge I wouldn’t think it was the place for me because all I wanted was some black opaques!

FreeBritnee · 08/11/2021 07:56

It’s the pendulum swing. Everyone needs to feel represented for it to be truly inclusive.

We’ve had the years of heteronormative white dominance. We’re now over correcting that with brands only marketing themselves as being for plus sized LBTQ+ At some point it will hopefully find some middle ground that encompasses everyone successfully.

Absolutely agree. I can’t get too worked up by seeing “me” in the images: after all, I’m not 6ft size zero either so it’s not exactly a shock that I don’t look like a model hahahaha

But as a PP said, surely the core market for any tights company is the “black opaque” market - if I was looking for tights for worn purposes I would immediately log off their site!

But coming back to the main point of the discussion, that lady appears to be a huge drama queen and I REALLY wish I hadn’t looked at her Twitter feed!

@DickMabutt73962 isn't able to articulate what she likes about the bearded man with a hairy chest but - oddly - shaved armpits - wearing make up, a turban of sorts and posing in a err 'coquettish' manner.

Can't think why

I just see no point arguing with you as any non he see confirming man will be a creep or fetishising to you 🤷🏽‍♀️

To address a few issues mentioned:

-They aren’t showing pics of ‘masculine’ men and women because maybe they aren’t interested in wearing tights.

-The selection I showed from their Instagram showed only women to show that you can make it through a block of their feed without seeing a man, though some of you act like it’s littered with photos of men

-I really don’t see a need for them to showcase EVERY body type/gender expression to include typical bodies; every other clothing website already does that, so I’m glad to see a different focus.

But I’ll continue to buy their tights as they fit my body perfectly, and I’m not triggered by a photo of a man in tights.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 08/11/2021 09:38

Who said anyone was “triggered”?

I’ll continue to buy their rights as well, because they offer a good product.

But it won’t stop me being very cynical about how they choose to advertise.

It’s funny how “gender diverse” advertising only seems to work one way- men being used to promote products which are mainly consumed by women.

I don’t see the likes of Calvin Klein tripping over themselves to use a masculine or butch presenting woman to advertise their men’s briefs, or Lynx using Drag Kings to promote their Christmas Box sets.

MrsJamin · 08/11/2021 09:50

I had that facebook post too - it's utterly fetishist and disgusting. I'd never buy from them. It's so disappointing that they can't just be inclusive of all women's sizes without having to appeal to men's fetishes. I have reported the ad as sexually inappropriate. Neither Snag nor the applicant are in the right, here.

no - PeriChristmas posted the image on Sun 07-Nov-21 21:56:59
MrsJamin · 08/11/2021 10:32

Why should tights, that fit around your crotch area, be suitable similarly for men and women anyway? I wouldn't want to buy tights that men said were great - it would make me think they wouldn't fit me as I don't have a penis and bollocks.

DistrustfulDinosaur · 08/11/2021 11:07

I can understand the applicant feeling disappointed/annoyed that Snag went back on their word about giving her an interview. It does seem odd to only check Social Media after sending interview invites out. It literally takes less than an minute and surely saves you much more time as you're not interviewing someone who is a bad fit for your business? But causing a social media shitstorm over it is just ridiculous. Unfortunately people make mistakes, e-mails get missed etc. Some people seem to forget that businesses are run by people and not a single human on the planet is perfect.

She's shown herself to be a poor candidate for the job and generally unpleasant person now though, so I'm not sure what she was hoping to achieve.

It's ridiculous how some people seem to think they have the power to single handedly destroy a business with a few nasty social media posts. I've encountered it a few times over the years with my own small business. In my experience, it's actually encouraged more pleasant, decent customers to use us more and kept the less desirables away. The worst thing you can do is get into an online 'discussion' with this type of person as they'll just twist everything you say to fit their narrative. Offer to discuss in person and if they're not interested, then just delete their comments and block. They're not someone you want to be associated with your business, and you'll never please everyone in life.

I don't dislike that image at all. It shows the tights, the models aren't in a sexual pose, the models are fully clothed (which is how I would normally expect tights wearers to be).

It's the sexual / fetishistic ones I really dislike (whether the models are male or female), while the 'kwerky' ones (which this one isn't) just annoy me and therefore don't attract me as a customer.

CSJobseeker · 08/11/2021 11:12

This is what Snag should have done. A public debate with this woman was never going to go well.
