So sick of the constant stupid fireworks

When will they hurry up and ban fireworks for private sale?
Have 2 dogs shivering under the sofa. Huge bangs outside. What if you have a baby in bed?
Anti social behaviour if you ask me.
Take your kids to a proper display.

I'm also in London and they're not really much louder to me than the constant traffic noise. I can hear them but they're not intrusively loud.

They're not good at all environmentally, I don't buy them myself. But from where I am I can look south over the city and see little colourful sparkles all over, it reminds me of when we used to have a couple in the garden as children. They're pretty and I do enjoy them (whilst also fully accepting how bad they are!).

Babyroobs · 05/11/2021 20:19

I absolutely detest them. Poor dog is a total wreck, clawing at my legs.

mydogisthebest · 05/11/2021 20:19

@sleepycoffeemonster

For every so many people that hate them, there are the same amount that love them. I agree they should only be let off on 5th nov as then people can make arrangements to keep pets in etc but for my family its been a happy family tradition that all generations meet up for every year and the kids love the evening. Its one evening a year (or it should be!).

When we had out lovely dog, we spent time training and desensitising her to the noises when she was young and she got used to it. Nowadays people just seem get pissed off and don't even think about how they could help stop their pets being scared, because its not a quick fix.

IF you had read the thread in full you would have seen my post about how I trained my puppy not to be scared of any noise. Fireworks, hoovers, motorbikes - any noise you can think of I played videos or cd's of and it worked. He wasn't scared of anything.

Until an ignorant arsehole let off a firework at 3pm (yes it was still light) and nowhere near 5th November as we walked past their garden.

I have tried over and over again to de-sensitise him again but to no avail.

Also how exactly are people meant to stop their horses, birds, rabbits etc being scared?

Babyroobs · 05/11/2021 20:20

@stingofthebutterfly

I'm sat in my lounge with the TV on and I honestly can't hear a single firework. I don't know how it's possible that they're affecting dogs and babies so much.
Because here they are constant and like bloody mortar bombs going off in every direction. there is no need for it.
Ghoulette · 05/11/2021 20:20

@PloughedMeadow

Fireworks are no worse than dogs barking and other things that I would rather not have. What about some tolerance - we are all different and need to accept that sometimes we have to put up with things we don't like/would rather not have etc....
Tell that to my terrified and elderly, dementia suffering grandmother! And no, it's not one night, it's months, and it scares her every bloody time.

There are thousands of elderly people like her, and war vets, who will be suffering tonight.

There is a massive difference between a huge loud explosion every 5 seconds and a dog barking in a garden. What the fuck.

MrsKeats · 05/11/2021 20:20

I agree ghoulette
I was just ranting about my situation. Those are other reasons why they should be banned no question.
I teach and have students with ptsd and some refugee students too so some of them will not be enjoying this.

You can't comprehend that other places are different to where you are? This is such a daft comment. Hmm

Maybe not everyone lives where you do? Here we've got old stone walls that are ridiculously thick, double glazing, and I've got headphones on with music and can still hear them incredibly loud round here. Luckily I have no babies, pets or veterans in the house.
Sweettea1 · 05/11/2021 20:21

Some brain boxes from the local councils decided to cancel all displays due to covid how they can blame covid is ridiculous when everything else is back to normal what did they expect to happen.

The fireworks here sound like bombs going off and its not just the odd 1 really loud one but every single 1 is so loud.

Dd is currently crying asking when will they stop were normally ok but they seem alot worse tonight compared to other years.

I can hear them really loudly, well above the traffic. Probably just depends how many people are doing them in your area.

Well lucky you. Where I lived they were so loud even if I had the tv at its absolute loudest I could hear them over it. Lots of them honestly sounded like bombs going off and, yes, I have heard an actual bomb go off.

Maybe no one near you has fireworks or maybe they have ones that are not so noisy

BurntTheFuckOut · 05/11/2021 20:22

2 hours of it here and counting so far. They are so fucking loud, it’s like they’re right outside my bedroom window.

emmaluggs · 05/11/2021 20:22

I must be one of the lucky ones, 2 dogs and 2 children snoring away with bangs very close by

IgnoranceIsStrength · 05/11/2021 20:22

Dog is cowering on the stairs. 2 DC who should be asleep wide awake as neighbour behind shooting them at our house. They have a tiny garden so no space for the size of the fireworks fireworks have going. Saw a muntjac freaking out in the road earlier. DH went for a walk into woods to see view from top of hill and found it tangled in a fence. Poor thing was stressed and exhausted. I'm all for public displays but every 3rd house seems to be on it tonight and it is relentless

MrsKeats · 05/11/2021 20:22

Last time I checked dogs didn't explode and blow people's fingers off ploughed.

YANBU
Two terrified dogs shivering and blank-eyed with fright. One head buried into my armpit and shivering for hours now, the other hiding with her face shoved in tight behind the toilet in the downstairs loo. Both flat like pancakes and panting wildly. I can’t do anything or leave the sofa because if I move I am followed by terrified dogs seeking sanctuary.

We had this for diwali yesterday, guy fawkes now tonight and all weekend. So over this fecking time of year! Angry

MrsKeats · 05/11/2021 20:23

I don't discount your reasoning at all, pets suffering is a huge issue and it's awful when you are the one with the terrified puppy and the baby you can't get to sleep because it sounds like a warzone outside.

I am sorry for your students too. People seem so closed minded in thinking it's just dogs and cats that are affected but the reality is much worse.

That, and people will injure themselves and end up putting pressure on the NHS tonight and wonder why that awful freak accident befell them.... not registering that they are to blame for thinking they can handle live explosives and fire!!

BiteyShark · 05/11/2021 20:24

My dog is terrified and stressed but at least he has me to comfort him. I feel for the wildlife that must be even more scared.

Nyxs · 05/11/2021 20:25

@PloughedMeadow do you realise that most diga only occasionally bark. Or even very rarely bark.

I have never lived anywhere where I can hear a dog barking for hours at a time for several months.

Or thats distressing people as well.

MrsKeats · 05/11/2021 20:25

Yes exactly. It will be busy in A and E tonight. Like they've not got enough to do.

OP posts:
Notahandmaid · 05/11/2021 20:25

If you are sick of them, please please drop your MP a quick email asking them to attend this debate on Monday and to support a ban on the sale of fireworks except for licensed displays only:

committees.parliament.uk/committee/326/petitions-committee/news/158508/mps-to-debate-petition-on-fireworks/

I am typing this at an animal sanctuary where volunteers come and sit with the dogs in the evenings for a week either side of 5th November to calm those who are scared by the fireworks. It's fireworks fortnight now not fireworks night.

stingofthebutterfly · 05/11/2021 20:26

@PinkWaferBiscuit no, it's not a daft comment. If I go outside then it's full on. Here is no different to anywhere else. They're non-stop. I just struggle to believe that dogs and babies are that negatively affected by it if they're kept inside with general household noise going on. Some people will use anything as an excuse to get a bit of fun banned.

MrsKeats · 05/11/2021 20:26

Thanks not
Will totally do this
