So sick of the constant stupid fireworks

When will they hurry up and ban fireworks for private sale?
Have 2 dogs shivering under the sofa. Huge bangs outside. What if you have a baby in bed?
Anti social behaviour if you ask me.
Take your kids to a proper display.

YANBU.

I’m fine with organised ones, but people have been setting them off for hours now. I actually like fireworks, but I do think it’s a bit much. Doesn’t help that a lot of displays locally have been cancelled. I drove past a massive unofficial bonfire earlier (not yet lit), with pallets and wood, mattresses and other things on. It really is terrible for the environment and I think, in the interests of providing cleaner air etc, it should only be organised displays at most. I’m not asthmatic but my chest is always awful after bonfire night, and I don’t really go out anywhere for it!

I understand they are all part of the UKs contribution to ensuring that Cop26 is a success.

One night or weekend, fair enough but constant bangs going off for weeks. Its anti social and rubbish. Those that don't empathise with others suffering just so they can have their entertainment boil my piss.

Snoozer11 · 05/11/2021 19:39

We've had an hour and a half of it constantly outside. I can't remember them ever being this loud before.

It's ridiculous. I'm so pleased my dogs have never been bothered by them. They'd have been terrified for hours now if they were.

I just don't get it. Once you've seen one firework you've seen them all. I actually think it's really pathetic that people buy them for their own use in their back gardens and I dream that they are banned soon. I think if all the big supermarkets stop selling them things will be different.

mydogisthebest · 05/11/2021 19:39

I used to live in Essex and there would be fireworks night after night after night for a couple of weeks minimum. Thankfully where I live now the people are quite as stupid and selfish although I still hate fireworks.

My dog was never scared of them mainly because I spent ages playing videos on youtube of firework displays and cd's of fireworks and other noises.

Then about 4 years ago some absolute moron let a firework off as we walked past their garden. It was 3pm and nowhere near 5th November (think it was around the 14th). My dog was terrified and just wanted to run home. It was all I could do to hang on to him as he is a pretty big strong dog. If I had not been able to hang on he likely would have run into the busy road.

It's pretty quiet where I am but there are some fireworks going off. Next door have gone out and left their dog alone and the poor thing is barking like crazy

Jaxhog · 05/11/2021 19:40

@usernumberno46273

I can sympathise op. I don't think that they should be totally banned but I do believe that they should only be let off 5th November by the Public and well advertised organised displays!

I am fortunate my dog is fine with them. Ds doesn't like them up close as he has asd but does enjoy them from the distance. Both mine slept through them as babies!

I agree. My elderly cat is currently hiding in the dark, very scared.

They started last night (next door) in our area and will continue until a week tomorrow, judging by previous years.

I8toys · 05/11/2021 19:40

My cats are listening to classic fm. Pet tunes apparently.

Sparklingbrook · 05/11/2021 19:40

It's actually Bonfire Night tonight, the night you would fully expect there to be fireworks so I can't get wound up by them tonight.

hibye123 · 05/11/2021 19:40

Babies sleep through this kind of thing.

You gotta be kidding me😂 I know my DD doesn't speak for all babies across the world but she's currently twisting and turning due to all the loud bangs. She's already woken up twice so looks like we're gonna have a long weekend. Plus she's teething!

The fireworks are being done directly downstairs and sounds like they're lighting up the whole block. I wish I could call the police😂 I just want a good night's rest fgs!

Pascal80 · 05/11/2021 19:41

Outside now there are a bunch of men setting off those massive Chinese ones (that there was a craze for a decade ago - blowing up telephone boxes). It sounds like ordnance. I feel very sad for all animals, babies and people with combat stress. It needs to STOP.

tiredanddangerous · 05/11/2021 19:42

I wouldn't mind if it was just tonight but it's been every night for at least a week so far and will carry on for fuck knows how long. Three terrified cats and an autistic child with a pillow over her head here.

Whinge · 05/11/2021 19:42

It's been the same near me. There must be hundreds of pounds worth being sent up. It's been relentless. It's so antisocial, as there's no escaping the noise and smoke. Angry

I8toys · 05/11/2021 19:42

Why is it always blokey blokes? Is it some rite of passage? Here son light this monster bastard blaster and you'll be a man my son.

insancerre · 05/11/2021 19:42

I hate them
They should be banned

TheChip · 05/11/2021 19:45

I hate them. I wouldnt mind actual displays with set times. But when they go off for hours and hours and hours it's just too much.

Even on diazepam, my dog is still a nervous wreck. I've got my TV blasting and the fan on and booms are still making it through.

There aren't any "proper displays" in Scotland because Queen Nicola is still banging on about Covid and they've all been cancelled.
blairresignationjam · 05/11/2021 19:47

I could scream. Everytime my baby falls asleep.another one goes off. Are they made of plastic? Surely it's also littering.

Pedalpushers · 05/11/2021 19:48

I've got to wonder how quiet your areas must usually be - I'm in London and can count 15 or so houses setting them off from my window and it's barely registering as background noise.

NotMyCat · 05/11/2021 19:51

I don't live in a particularly quiet area but there are two local firework displays plus the ones people are setting off at home Am sat with the cat who is comforting me Blush I've not been the same with them since one got thrown in my window next to me
Flickerflicker · 05/11/2021 19:51

I simply can't believe it's still legal for the public to buy the bastard things. My kids hate them because they've seen how much stress and pain they cause.

I don't know how anyone can defend something that does cause harm to others. How can they be justified? How??

Britneyb · 05/11/2021 19:52

I hate dogs but understand that some people like them so we have to accommodate them. Fireworks are less dangerous than dogs.

chlorineirene · 05/11/2021 19:52

My baby has never woken up because of fireworks. She's 3 now. We recently took her to a public display and she slept through in a pram

Ghoulette · 05/11/2021 19:52

How about worrying about our veterans, people with mental health issues, sensory issues, vulnerable adults, elderly with dementia etc rather than pets?

There are far more reasons (reasons that people may better sympathise with) than then pets and babies waking up (and I say that as someone with two terrified cats).

Would certainly have a bigger impact if people made it about people rather than animals because the general public don't care about pets or even livestock in lot of cases.

PinkWaferBiscuit · 05/11/2021 19:53

I couldn't agree more OP. Another here with a toddler who never got the memo to sleep though this kind of noise.

Also I'm massively intrigued as to how the fuck my neighbours can afford to spend 100s of pounds on them it seems almost every house on our street has had their own display, they are getting louder and longer as the evening goes on. I'm clearly in the wrong job.

alfagirl73 · 05/11/2021 19:53

I don't mind proper displays (although not really my thing) - but they are going off so loud and so close to houses etc... round here. I have two cats currently terrified. Got soothing cat music on the TV which is helping a bit but seeing them so scared is horrible. There was someone in the street outside my house letting them off last night - right in the middle of the road... with cars coming! I'm continuously baffled by the utter stupidity of people.
