So sick of the constant stupid fireworks

When will they hurry up and ban fireworks for private sale?
Have 2 dogs shivering under the sofa. Huge bangs outside. What if you have a baby in bed?
Anti social behaviour if you ask me.
Take your kids to a proper display.

For every so many people that hate them, there are the same amount that love them. I agree they should only be let off on 5th nov as then people can make arrangements to keep pets in etc but for my family its been a happy family tradition that all generations meet up for every year and the kids love the evening. Its one evening a year (or it should be!).

When we had out lovely dog, we spent time training and desensitising her to the noises when she was young and she got used to it. Nowadays people just seem get pissed off and don't even think about how they could help stop their pets being scared, because its not a quick fix.

Iheartmysmart · 05/11/2021 20:09

They’ve been going on for over 3 hours here. Dog absolutely hates any loud noises despite trying all the CD desensitising, thundershirt, adaptil, sedation techniques. We are currently having some success with lavender oil in the burner and a calming playlist but he’s getting stressed now. Just shut the bloody things up please.

cobblers123 · 05/11/2021 20:10

They've been going for a couple of hours now, cat is in kitchen cupboard squashed into the veg basket just like the past couple of nights. He's always hated fireworks and is frightened by the noise.

It will be the same tomorrow and Sunday I expect ...

SleepingStandingUp · 05/11/2021 20:10

We live near the local Temple and a few pubs. Even if they banned private sale, we'd still have babies waking to bangs and there will still be a scared dogs.

elephantoverthehill · 05/11/2021 20:10

I had to buy my Dd ear defenders today. Fireworks really set her tics off. I really love them though.

qualitygirl · 05/11/2021 20:11

YANBU I'm glad I live somewhere they are banned for private use!

So allowed for the ritual burning of guy fawkes but not for Diwali or any other celebration?
DroopyClematis · 05/11/2021 20:12

People have gone mad with fireworks around here. Our dog has slunk off to hide under our bed.

My mum worked in a shop in the 70s and a teenager who'd bought a load of fireworks from her died as a stupid idiot lit one from the lad's pocket and shoved it back into his pocket while he had fireworks in it.

My mum never recovered from that.
At this time of year it's all she can think about.

I attended a public display, when I was 8 , and a firework landed in my hood after skimming my face.
Oh the pain.

SleepingStandingUp · 05/11/2021 20:12

@Drivingish

It's idiotic how loud they are, round here it genuinely sounds like the old broadcasts of Beirut - not exaggerating. There's no need for it, fireworks can be made quiet but still be stunning, that would help babies/animals/peace of mind a great deal.
This is where I think it needs to go. They need to put a limit on the noise. It would still be effective without ear splitting bangs
CMZ2018 · 05/11/2021 20:12

Wish all the dogs would shut up, I’m struggling to hear the fireworks

A580Hojas · 05/11/2021 20:12

It's hard for pet owners but I just think it's better to accept that a lot of people really enjoy them. We all have our bug bears and we all have to rub along with each other somehow.

MLMshouldbeillegal · 05/11/2021 20:12

it's like The Somme outside presently

Fuck me. Have you any idea how inappropriate and offensive this is.

Yes, but not almost every single night for 4-5 months. And that's not an exaggeration. It's been weeks already. That's the reality on the estate I live on.
mydogisthebest · 05/11/2021 20:14

@MyDcAreMarvel

My baby is wrapped up warm in his pram enjoying the fireworks. It’s bonfire night and it’s ok for humans to be the priority rather than animals. There are things you can do to help your dog.
What about wildlife that is terrified? What about fireworks starting fires in barns and injuring animals? What about elderly people who lived through the war and fireworks bring back bad memories?

Some dogs (and other animals) cannot be helped. Quite a few of my friends have dogs who are absolutely terrified. They shake, pant and drool non stop. One dog had a heart attack because of the fear. Another dog has to be sedated because she is so scared. How is it fair to have to sedate a dog night after night after night.

I know someone whose terrified horse ran into a barbed wire fence in fear and not only was injured but also suffered a miscarriage.

But yes humans must have their fireworks

It's not a choice between the noise and enjoying them though, there are quieter ones if people were more considerate in buying them, and then people can enjoy them but others won't be as bothered by them.

And what about those with PTSD, the elderly, war veterans, vulnerable children with major sensory and emotional issues.....

Should we just put up with it for 4 months if the year too so people can have their bangs and pretty lights???

loobylou44 · 05/11/2021 20:16

I don't mind fireworks but why do they have to be so bloody loud, or make any noise at all?
Thankfully my dog isn't too bothered but my uncle really suffers due to ptsd from time in the forces, he's an absolute mess.
My eldest was on her 2nd ever driving lesson yesterday and some little twerp threw a firework at the car. Thankfully the instructor was switched on and managed to get the car out of the way.
Also, where the hell are people getting the money from?!

Nyxs · 05/11/2021 20:16

The twats at the back of us never learn.

Last year they let off ones in their garden. Really loud ones. Shaking our windows.

They had 2 new kittens. Next day they were asking us all to walk the streets trying to find the kittens.

Done the same this year. With even more cats. I have found 2 xowerinf under our decking.

They can fuck off if they think I am spending Saturday, looking for their cats.

The poor cats spend most of their time in winter on our sheltered decking as they don't let them in very often.

Elphame · 05/11/2021 20:17

Older dog is barking at them and the 5 month old puppy is terrified, cowering on my lap.

It's going to be a long weekend. There are at least 2 more displays, one on Saturday and one on Sunday, not to mention the private ones.

Gensola · 05/11/2021 20:17

I hate them too - they are totally antisocial, dangerous and selfish. 100% support a total ban on private use!

MrsKeats · 05/11/2021 20:17

3 hours now and no sign of the noise dying down.
Will sign the petition.
Hope everyone's pets are ok :((

PloughedMeadow · 05/11/2021 20:17

Fireworks are no worse than dogs barking and other things that I would rather not have. What about some tolerance - we are all different and need to accept that sometimes we have to put up with things we don't like/would rather not have etc....

Ghoulette · 05/11/2021 20:17

Also, if people enjoy them that much they can pay to see them at private and regulated displays instead of hurting vulnerable people, animals and the environment so they can have a laugh in their garden.

jgw1 · 05/11/2021 20:18

Luckily the NHS isn't currently about to collapse and there are plenty of spare beds in A+E for morons who let of fireworks into themselves.

stingofthebutterfly · 05/11/2021 20:18

I'm sat in my lounge with the TV on and I honestly can't hear a single firework. I don't know how it's possible that they're affecting dogs and babies so much.
