Inspired by a comment on another thread.

How do you and your family make porridge? I was brought up to boil the oats (rolled oats preferably) with water till thick then spoon into the bowl and add cold milk and sprinkle brown sugar on top.

Put oats and cold water in bowl, microwave for 2 minutes, add desired flavouring (eg syrup, cinnamon)

3dogsnorth · 05/11/2021 13:04

I am not a porridge fan but have found a couple of tips to make it more pleasant!

  1. Toast the oats first, either in a little butter or dry until they become fragrant
  2. Always stir in the same direction as it makes them creamy
  3. I add a little salt and use oat milk and add sugar to taste
EishetChayil · 05/11/2021 13:15

Sachets.

Making it from scratch is an absolute arse-ache. Ain't nobody got time to be scraping porridge off a pan until Maundy Tuesday.

I make in from scratch in no more than 5 minutes (less if I didn't add an apple to it!) with the only washing up being the bowl I made it in.
nannybeach · 05/11/2021 14:12

Oats in saucepan, cold water.couple of minutes, dash of skimmed milk, topping, fruit.

gingercat02 · 05/11/2021 14:13

200mls milk 40g oats. Microwave for 2 mins stir m/w for 1 min. I like a splash of maple syrup on mine. Scottish FiL says only oats water and a pinch of salt!

BryanAdamsLeftAnkle · 05/11/2021 14:55

Pour porridge oats into a pot, pour in water, let it bubble. Put in a bowl once thick and add a tiny splash of milk....

macshoto · 05/11/2021 15:39

30g rolled oats (Mornflake)
10g rolled rye (Swedish from Ocado)
5g oat bran (Mornflake)
250ml semi-skimmed milk
~40-50ml water

Put all ingredients in bowl and leave in fridge overnight to soak.

In the morning put in microwave and microwave on full power for about 2m30s stirring a couple of times.

Go have shower.

Return to microwave, stir again, and microwave for another 1m, stirring as necessary to prevent boiling over.

Serve with fresh strawberries or raspberries (when in season) or a home-made prune and tangerine compote (with minimal added sugar) in winter.

booboo57 · 05/11/2021 15:48

OK Time for me to put my oar in, I can't resist. It depends if you want your oats cooked or not. If you want them cooked, ie smooth and creamy and not floury tasting, you need to boil for a least a minute with stiring like white sauce etc for the starch to burst. Raw oats eg in overnight oats are rank.
1 part any sort of porridge oats, 1 part milk, 2 parts water, pinch of salt (or it will taste of wallpaper paste).
Favourite toppings: Chilled stewed fruit so it slightly melts on the hot porridge. Demerara sugar let it melt a bit so its sweet but still slightl crunchy. stir in some blueberries .

@macshoto your prune and tangerine compote sounds lovely. What quantities do you use?

With water and salt, cook so it's nice and thick. Make a well in the middle and pour over cold milk. AMAZING.

NotMyCat · 05/11/2021 16:10

Own brand individual packet oats
Add milk
Microwave
Add sliced banana and teaspoon peanut butter

macshoto · 05/11/2021 17:35

@JumpLeadsForTwo it's about a 250g pack of prunes to 10/12 tangerine/satsuma (or whatever is in the supermarket). Peel citrus and separate segments (chop some quite roughly), chop prunes into halves/quarters. Simmer in a pan until not too liquid - depending on how juicy the initial components were you might have to start with a small amount of water or orange juice. Taste, add sugar if the citrus component was a bit too acidic (often not necessary). Put in sterilised jars. Keep in fridge once opened.

jetadore · 05/11/2021 18:33

40g oats
300ml water (cold)
Pinch salt
NO milk/butter/cream, you heathens.
In a saucepan, on the hob, stirring, until it reaches your preferred consistency.

Serve with topping of choice (golden syrup for me).

OhLordyWhatNow · 05/11/2021 19:46

@UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme

Not everyone has or wants to use a microwave 😵‍💫

Rice porridge on the hob is probably quicker than oats in a microwave anyway.

Rowgtfc72 · 05/11/2021 19:50

Oats, cold water, nuke in microwave for 2mins. No topping or sugar, just as it comes.

gofg · 05/11/2021 20:06

That's why you use a microwave - couldn't be more simple! Even if you do make it in a saucepan you put cold water in and leave it for a while - it just falls off.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 05/11/2021 20:13

OhLordyWhatNow oats are nutritionally better than rice though, plus most people eat rice at other times, such as with vegetables/ curry but don't eat porridge at other times. I'm not sure why anyone would choose to make a porridge out of rice if they had oats.

TimeToSay · 05/11/2021 20:14

Oats in the pan. Add milk.

Heat on until it's bubbling and then turn down, stirring quite frequently until it looks done.

My daughter has hers with either cinnamon stirred in while cooking.

Or we add a bit of honey or jam once it's done.

Same except Demerara sugar first allow to melt then milk. I don't really understand the packet ones as they take longer than boiling or microwaving the oats. Son likes his with maple syrup mixed in.
milveycrohn · 05/11/2021 20:19

Oats and water, and 2 mins in microwave, Leave to stand. Add some fruit for sweetness

CheapFoodShits · 05/11/2021 20:26

Weigh out 40g Quaker oats, measure 200ml whole milk (I'm on Slimming World 😂), mix it up in a bowl and chuck it in the microwave for 2 minutes. Then I add sweetener and cinnamon.

caringcarer · 05/11/2021 20:31

Scoop of oats pour in milk, place in microwave. Stir in cream before eating.
