Inspired by a comment on another thread.

How do you and your family make porridge? I was brought up to boil the oats (rolled oats preferably) with water till thick then spoon into the bowl and add cold milk and sprinkle brown sugar on top.

1/3 cup oats, 2/3 cups milk, one diced apple, handful of raisins, shed loads of cinnamon. Cover and microwave for 2-3 minutes.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 05/11/2021 10:09

On the hob, double the amount of water to oats, stir at medium heat until it thickens, add a splash of milk and a good squeeze of honey. Yum!

SoupDragon · 05/11/2021 10:09

Clearly you do, because that's what everyone is talking about 🤷‍♀️

No we aren't, we are talking about porridge. Clearly you're the only one talking about "oatmeal", presumably because you are American.

NotAnotherPylon · 05/11/2021 10:13

Scoop of oats in bowl (my mum gave me a Quaker porridge scoop years ago), milk halfway up bowl, grate some apple in, add a few sultanas and cook in microwave for 2 mins 30 secs. I usually take it out and stir it once or twice. If I have time on my hands and don't mind scraping welded-on porridge afterwards, I throw everything into a pot and cook very slowly on a low heat. I always put in any dried fruit at the start as I don't like it to be chewy or gritty.

Vanillabourbon · 05/11/2021 10:16

Oats & milk in the microwave for 2 minutes, then add blueberries & an extra splash of milk for 30 seconds, top with honey & cinnamon, then mix so all the blueberries squish.

Porridge and oatmeal are not the same. I also tend to use use the UK shorthand conflating porridge and oats but porridge is made from a number of different grains.

Strictly speaking the US term is accurate, the UK term is colloquial shorthand.

And on the subject, I use about a handful of oats (about 30g) with double quantity water and leave them to soak overnight then cook in the microwave. I'm not a big breakfast eater but sometimes have porridge for lunch at home with grated apple, cinnamon and hazelnuts or mixed berries and walnuts. I don't add salt or sugar.

DH thinks this madness.

Bloodypunkrockers · 05/11/2021 10:20

So many lovely ideas here and I'm going to try a lot of them

I had porridge this morning and I think I need to get some new fancy porridge bowls

recededpronunciation · 05/11/2021 10:25

1 part rolled oats to 2 parts water/milk (it all milk if you’re like me and prefer it that way) in a bowl on a trivet in the pressure cooker. Water underneath. Pressure cook about 7 minutes while you get on a do something else. Best porridge I’ve ever had.

CokeZeroAddiction · 05/11/2021 10:30

Half water half milk in the hob, with a peeled and diced apple, sultanas and cinnamon. Top with walnuts and syrup if feeling adventurous.

bumbleymummy · 05/11/2021 10:33

Cook oats in water and add honey when serving. Sometimes a splash of non-dairy milk and cinnamon too.

SingingSands · 05/11/2021 10:36

Me: The Scottish way: make with water, stirred on the hob. Add salt and eat with a sour face.

My kids: make in microwave, use too much milk, zap it until it looks like it's boiling or has boiled over to be sure. Squirt with syrup. Bugger off to school and leave mum to clear up the mess.

ShouldersBackChestOutChinUp · 05/11/2021 10:36

Soak porridge oats overnight in milk and cream and a tiny sprinkle of cinnamon and brown sugar.

Warm through in a pan the next morning. Lots more milk so it's not stiff.

Blackmagicqueen · 05/11/2021 10:40

I love creamy porridge made with milk that isn't runny or too thick.

I put oats in a sauce pan and then add plenty of milk and simmer and stir until cooked and thickened; as it is thickening i add tiny drizzles of cold water and stir(don't know why but this process makes the creaminess nicest porridge we have ever tasted).
When at desired consistency i spoon in to bowls and drizzle with honey or desired toppings! I love it with honey though and sometimes tiny naughty sprinkle of brown sugar!

NotAnotherPylon · 05/11/2021 10:43

Add salt and eat with a sour face.

🤣🤣

HotToddyColdSauvignon · 05/11/2021 10:52

YOU'RE ALL WRONG

Half milk, half double cream. Equal amounts oats and dark muscavado brown sugar. Cook with milk / cream mixture until thick and glorious. Add another tablespoon of muscavado sugar on top before serving, with a tablespoon of a decent single malt whisky.

Disclaimer: I have no idea why people say porridge is healthy. It most definitely is NOT Grin

RobotValkyrie · 05/11/2021 10:56

One pint oats, one pint water, one pint milk (can be almond milk)
Put on hob on hot, till it starts boiling.
Decrease heat and stir occasionally, till consistency looks right.
Serves about 4. Add honey, nuts and/or fruits to taste.

TaraR2020 · 05/11/2021 12:19

Oats and milk heated in a pan on the stove until nicely thickened and oats softened, with spices added- usually ginger and nutmeg.

Splash of cold milk on top and enjoy.

If I'm feeling jndulgent ill top with cream and a little sugar Blush

OneTC · 05/11/2021 12:30

Oatmeal is porridge

Porridge is not necessarily oatmeal

If you're adding anything other than water and salt at cooking stage you're out of your bloody tree

AngelsWithSilverWings · 05/11/2021 12:30

40g oats to 250ml of skimmed milk

Add pinch of salt and stir over heat until it's the consistency you like.

I stir in some maple flavour skinny syrup or regular maple syrup but if I'm feeling in need of some proper comfort food I add double cream and sugar.

minimadgirl · 05/11/2021 12:35

Oats with a mix of soya milk or Oat milk and water. Stick in a pyrex dish with ginger and cinnamon on top, bung in the aga.
Then if I fancy mix in banana , fruit, raisins, syrup, whatever

nousernamehere01 · 05/11/2021 12:55

I only make it for my toddler, so I use all milk.

I just put milk and oats in the pan then stir until hot and thick.

If I'm adding flavours I'll add when it's cold. (Grated apple and a bit of cinnamon is a huge hit)

hamsterchump · 05/11/2021 12:56

1 part oats, 1 part milk, 1 part water, cook on hob for a few minutes until it thickens. I usually have golden syrup on it.

Wimpeyspread · 05/11/2021 12:58

Exactly like you - occasionally cream instead of milk, and soft brown sugar so it melts

TaraR2020 · 05/11/2021 12:59

@OneTC what's the difference? Confused
