Would you pay?

I'm so sorry, I'm putting this up again because I'm hoping to get more opinions.

Went to the hairdressers and got a trim and dye. Was asked to leave the cash in the next day, as the card machine was broken. Came home and looked at my hair and it's so patchy! I haven't left the money in yet, but im tempted to just pay for the trim and not the dye. I don't want to ask them to do it again, as I don't trust them and I would feel really uncomfortable sitting there whilst they done it, as I'm quite an anxious person.

AIBU to just pay for the trim?

Would you pay?

Hi op I am a hairdresser and will confirm what you know that is not a good job. I can tell you that most hairdressers do not give money back, they will always say they will fix. Basically this is because people coming have a load of work done then say they do t like it won’t pay. Anyway, you could probably get away with it as you haven’t paid but it’s not a nice move, they have spent time on you that costs money. They didn’t purposefully do a bad job they should have the opportunity to put it right. But I think that maybe you have already made up mind.

@Charlene1971

😊 sure thing hun

Please accept the outcome of the first thread you post about a topic, rather than coming back to post again in future 😊

ifonly4 · 01/11/2021 18:50

I'd contact them and tell them that now you've had the chance to look properly in different light, it's clearly patchy - then see what they say without mentioning the question of paying. If they say they'll put it right, I'd give them a chance but ask for a senior stylist (or a different stylist to correct).

@VaguelyInteresting

I didn't get enough responses from the first one, which is why I came back.

I don't need your permission to post, I'll post as many threads as I like 😂 who do you think you are telling me how many threads I can post? 😂

They only have the one colourist, and he's the one who done my hair 😔 not comfortable going back for him to make it even worse.

@Cam77

Jesus Christ JC yourself! Let them fix it and then pay up, or pay up directly and leave a poor review. If a service has been provided you can't just not pay.
A shit review is usually worse for most businesses than a loss of the product costs I would have thought. I'm with you OP.

You can't just not pay.

You need to go and see them and discuss it.

katieg03 · 01/11/2021 19:04

I wouldn't let anyone have touched my hair without a patch test to start with. I wouldn't pay for that colour either. Thankfully so far I've not had any hair disasters, yet!

I'd pay for the cut and products used.

FreeBritnee · 01/11/2021 19:05

It doesn’t work like that I’m afraid. You have to allow them to rectify the mistake. You can’t just decide not to pay them.

mylovelydd · 01/11/2021 19:13

Well you seem determined to not pay for the haircut and colour nor give them a chance to fix it.
Shame really because they trusted you to come back and pay when their card machine wasn't working.

One has to feel for the hairdresser who wasn't able to work for the better part of two years and then wasted their time and resources and product on a customer who is apparently too timid to speak up yet can snipe at anyone who doesn't agree with her on mumsnet.

Wineandroses3 · 01/11/2021 19:16

People saying you need to give them a chance to rectify - why? She doesn’t need to do anything - they’re clearly rubbish at their job so why would she take the foreseeable risk that they damage her hair any more? That’s ridiculous. I would do it all over the phone - put the ball in their court - just tell them what’s happened - say you are happy with the trim but the colour is awful - then see what they say - if they offer for you to go back then politely decline - which is perfectly reasonable - I would then offer to pay for the trim and say I’m not happy paying for a colour that looks awful - they will probably agree for you to just pay for the cut. You will end up paying more at the next place you go cos they will have to sort it out and try to rectify it.

limitedperiodonly · 01/11/2021 19:19

Oh that old: "the card machine isn't working so we can only take cash" thing. First time that happened at a salon I naturally believed it and trotted off to the cash point on the corner. Six weeks later their cash machine still wasn't working so I did it again but never went back.

I really don't care if they were declaring money to HMRC or not. If I'd had cash I would have paid them without a second thought and if they'd have said they were a cash-only business I would have also complied.

I didn't expect them to recognise me but I was unhappy with the way they obviously thought I was a bit daft and it made me uneasy about going there again. I bet if I looked like I would do a runner they'd have asked for cash when I walked in or their card machine would have been working.

The cut was okay but there are plenty of other hairdressers round here. It's a standing joke - if a shop closes down it's evens whether it with reopen as a hairdresser/nail parlour or an estate agent.

In any case, I can't believe people on MN who insist you should pay for a bad job or let them try to put it right. Your hair looks shiny OP and that's the best I can say. Pay for the cut only.

ilovesooty · 01/11/2021 19:19

The salon might prefer to write off the cost anyway. You've benefited from the card machine not working in the first place, which has enabled you to choose not to pay and you're not even prepared to speak to them in person.

Sofiegiraffe · 01/11/2021 19:20

Exactly what I said.

OhWhyNot · 01/11/2021 19:20

I once had a bad cut I paid then complained next day

They fixed the cut but they didn’t and made it much worse

I went to another hairdressers they at least improved it

If they think that was acceptable why would you want them to fix it. I think that what is expected but I don’t see why l. I would pay for the cut

BobMortimersPetOwl · 01/11/2021 19:22

Sorry if I've missed your answer but I've seen a few people ask whether you had a box dye on your hair beforehand. Did you?

I think your attitude is horrid, incidentally. It seems bizarre that you're too timid for a confrontation about your hair but not too timid for a row about the price you should pay.

Probably brave and stroppy from behind a keyboard but not face to face.

@LittleMG

I get that people think that not paying is a shitty thing to do. But isn't it shitty to mess up my hair and then expect me to pay for it? Surely my bank balance is as important as their bank balance? Yet, I'm not the one who messed up, so why should I be the one out of pocket?

I'm not allowing them to rectify it, as the man who done it is the only colourist there, and he clearly isn't competent enough to do a good job the first time, so why should I let him try again, and damage it even more?

Well yes they trusted me, as I trusted them not to let me walk out of their salon with patchy hair. I guess we're both losers here.

Exactly. It's just basic consumer/service etiquette. The only situation I perhaps wouldn't pay for service received is if i had evidence they were taking the piss - IE purposely doing a substandard job to save themselves time/money. If however they honestly tried to provide a service and it was below average - well that's why we have free market competition and competitors + multiple avenues of reviews/ consumer feedback.

OhWhyNot · 01/11/2021 19:31

So what if the op doesn’t want to go in there I don’t blame her they have already shown that they will discuss anything in front of customers without boundaries

She hasn’t done anything wrong. I was made to feel uncomfortable for complaining about my hair cut I wish I hadn’t given them they chance to correct it but I stupidly did (would never again)

If they were professional they would have noticed the mistake they had made and would have apologised there and then and offered to correct it they were just hoping the op wouldn’t notice or wouldn’t complain

This did occur to me. I wouldn't be surprised if half the people saying I should pay would have done the opposite if it were them 🙄

It is understandable though that someone wouldn't want their hair to be done again by someone clearly incompetent, or pay for someone doing a crap job.
