Are my vintage tapestry shoes that bad?

I was in the charity shop today and found these I absolutely love them think they are super cute. I know some might find them awful but are they that bad?

They are vintage St Micheals (is that marks and Spencer) and made in England. Haven't got a clue how old they are but they are unworn and we're a bargain.

Slippers.

VitalsStable · 30/10/2021 14:09

Those are slippers. My Nan had those!

newmum0604 · 30/10/2021 14:14

I love them!

category12 · 30/10/2021 16:32

@BertramLacey

Nope, awful. Charity bag them

But that's where the OP got them from. So they're alright for someone else to get from the charity shop but not her? I wouldn't wear them, I think they're dreadful, but if the OP wants and likes them, that's fine.

But a posher version of Nora Batty is somewhere out there being deprived of them by OP's selfishness. Grin

They do look like shoes from the ‘80s, a weird and wonderful time. Some might find them awful, that’s ok!

Weepah · 30/10/2021 17:30

I think they're an absolute thrift score but I live in the States now and nobody here would be able to ID them as St. Michaels Gran slippers.

Silverflute · 30/10/2021 17:32

These are slippers. I and my sister had a pair each and they were very comfortable. You would be seriously undressed if you wore these as ‘cute shoes’.

Maybe not, but they could see they're fugly.

And surely the piping etc gives away the slipper status wherever you live?

Gingerwarthog · 30/10/2021 17:45

@justaweeone

I had a hold-all made from that material from M & S that I bought in the 80's
Me too! Thought I recognised the pattern. Had that hold-all for 25 years until it finally disintegrated.
fleurbelle · 30/10/2021 17:46

Yes they are really bad.
Sorry

FrankButchersDickieBow · 30/10/2021 17:48

I believe Billy Connolly would have referred to these as 'scone shoes' 🤣🤣

GlomOfNit · 30/10/2021 17:49

OP, sorry, I have voter's remorse! I voted YABU but on reflection YANBU, because why the hell should you not rehabilitate these horrors from the 80's or early 90's? Grin I remember tapestry clothing and accessories (jackets, bags etc) and yes I did have a tapestry bag in the early 90's for a while (as a student, so being a bit of an old fogey even then). The tapestry shoes and slippers were definitely a Thing but were quite certainly favoured by older (much older) women. However, if you can make these look cute then why not? I suspect it depends on the aplomb with which you can wear them, and the outfits you pair them with... and if you're about 30 you can probably get away with it. I, at 48, definitely could not! Grin

UltimateBugKilla · 30/10/2021 17:49

They do look more like slippers, the older generation (excuse my generalisation) took a lot more pride in there appearance that some of the newer generations, they remind me of something my lovely nan would have warm, a lovely warm feeling, enjoy them

MollyMinniesMum · 30/10/2021 17:52

Old lady slippers eeew

longwayoff · 30/10/2021 17:54

I carelessly bought a loose fitting dress in the current style from a charity shop a few weeks ago. On closer inspection, it's actually a nightdress. Relieved I didn't wear it out of house where someone might say 'o lovely, I've got the matching pyjamas'.Blush

Bertiebiscuit · 30/10/2021 18:02

Lovely - but definitely slippers 😍

SleepyMathematician · 30/10/2021 18:06

Your feet look great. Wear whatever you like and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!

chesirecat99 · 30/10/2021 18:07

@thereisonlyoneofme

My ercol furniture used to have cushions in this pattern fabric, sorry !
My lovely DGM had both the slippers AND Ercol furniture with tapestry cushions Grin Although by the 80s, it had been relegated to the conservatory as it was out of fashion but the tapestry cushions were new in an attempt to update it. In fact, it cost a small fortune to get rid of it in the late 80s as no one wanted it even for free. Except me, I managed to nab the studio couch for our teenage den and it is still going strong in my study now the fugly tapestry cushions are long gone though.

People will think you've forgot to
put your shoes on.

Happyher · 30/10/2021 18:24

If you like them that’s all that matters- have confidence in your own style. You don’t need validation from the nation

takenforgrantednana · 30/10/2021 18:27

@LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer

Here are the offenders
they arent shoes! they are old ladies slippers, my nana had some similar
MadAntonia · 30/10/2021 18:29

Slippers as shoes - why not?

They’re groovy.

Wear them with pride, OP.

Burgess67A · 30/10/2021 18:29

As long as you like them that’s all that matters

IVbumble · 30/10/2021 18:31

What a super pair of vintage treasures you have found! Lucky you OP.

No need to ask anyone else's view - just wear them wherever you want and know you are truly free because you don't need to care about or even think about what anyone else might be thinking.

Tip for stretching a little is to put two pairs of thicker socks on - squeeze into your shoe and use a hot hairdryer on all the bits that are a little too tight. Keep them on till cool and they should fit a little better.
