"To reduce your speed to 20mph to reduce the risk of accidents"

Um... Or perhaps they should thinking about scraping their backsides off the tarmac of a busy motorway during rush hour?!

Here we go again...

Are there some immediate ways to do this, I wonder:

All new housing stock both private and social must be built with full insulation, solar panels and e car charging points

As a condition of a properties sale, it has to be insulated

Reduce council tax in the year that a resident insulates their home to offset the cost

bordersroaming · 28/10/2021 12:14

That still penalises the poorer in society
Those in rented homes
Those who won't be able to afford to sell up

ivykaty44 · 28/10/2021 13:28

bordersroaming

Just look at the I’m alright mentality and there is your answer

bordersroaming · 28/10/2021 13:33

The sort of people who will moan like mad when their wallet or shopping supplies takes the hit

DdraigGoch · 28/10/2021 15:08

@Dojacatpaws

Emma, they haven't alienated everyone, only car drivers I'd imagine, not everyone drives
I don't drive. Quite the opposite, I'm one of those hated cyclists who'd quite like to see the back of motoring (polluting, noisy, makes the place look untidy...). I still say that the methods and messaging are incredibly counterproductive.
Dojacatpaws · 28/10/2021 15:47

I agree their methods are counterproductive, I just get tired of being told we should all be angry, it's generally a car centric point of view

DdraigGoch · 28/10/2021 16:06

When they blockaded that airport used predominantly by private jets, most of the country would have been behind them. A three hour flight in a private jet carries the same carbon footprint as my lifestyle generates in an ENTIRE YEAR. So by all means do everything you can to keep those jets grounded.

TSSDNCOP · 28/10/2021 16:29

alright @bordersroaming and @ivykaty44 what's your plan?

BTW below average pay worker here, just so you know where to aim your insults.

bordersroaming · 28/10/2021 17:05

my plan is for the government to redirect funding from heat pumps for the better off to insulation for the poor

Not sure why that's insulting ?

ivykaty44 · 28/10/2021 19:40

houses being insulated for free for those with a household income of less than £30k
solar power would also be good for those earning less than £30k any surplus taken for general usage

@Sparklingbrook

Do you really believe that their bizarre antics are helping their cause? That glueing themselves to the road and ranting manically on morning TV is going to make a huge difference? confused
It’s just switching people off from whatever the messages is.

Do you really believe people are "switched on" to their cause? The problem has been known for decades and action is way behind where it needs to be. Many posts on here contain insults or accusations of anarchy/conspiracy. People don't care, most people's priority is getting on with their commute/shopping/'normal' life and continue ignoring the the issue.

They might be able to switch people on and get the Government to take them seriously if they stopped their bizarre antics…

@TSSDNCOP

Let's pause for a second and consider that over 100 police officers needed hospital treatment after the London Poll Tax protest, and that arguably the real success of opposition protest was through people simply not paying it in staggering numbers and taking advantage of its administrative burden.

I have no issue with protest, I have protested, and would protest on climate change.

I will not protest with this shit shower who haven't even put their money where their mouths are, can't pull together an articulate credible spokesperson, are sticking themselves to the floor with toxic Loctite Henkel products produced in you guessed it and are stopping ordinary people getting to jobs, school and hospitals.

Christ, your whataboutery knows no bounds.

As I said nobody remembers the jockey or the 100 coppers, the direct action becomes symbolic of the changes that occurred.

Whatabout the toxic superglue? ffs

On Rosa Parks: Let's pause for a second to consider the loss of earnings of the bus companies and effect the decrease in take-home pay must have had on the drivers' families. Arguably the real success came as a result of political instability caused by the Vietnam conflict.

Muhammad Ali: Aligning himself with Islamic groups set the cause back and throwing his gold medal in the river was insulting to the goldsmith's craft, not to mention a waste of a precious metal that could have been used to fund worthy causes. Arguably the real success of opposition came when George Foreman knocked out Joe Frazier in the seventh... etc. and so on

jetadore · 29/10/2021 11:05

Just looking for excuses. People are incredibly apathetic and resistant to change. This has been coming for decades, if the protests are stopping people from switching on, who's been switching us off all that time? Those other arseholes, Gore, Thunberg, Attenborough, right? Insulate Britain, they may be twats, but they're right.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 29/10/2021 11:29

I find it a little bizarre that a group protesting for government help to insulate our inadequately heat retaining housing stock - presumably because they recognise that huge swathes of the population cannot afford to insulate their own homes - are criticised for not 'putting their money where their mouth is' if they haven't personally insulated their own homes. They are asking for government help for a reason, are only people who can afford to pay for their own eco measures allowed to ask the government to step up and help those who can't?

I do agree that their tactics are not winning them support and they should rethink - but this criticism is ludicrous.

Who is looking for excuses? They are indeed twats. And who wants to listen to twats?
WalkingOnTheCracks · 29/10/2021 12:11

@LemonSwan

Honestly what a load of drivel.

Do you know what would happen to me if I ran across the M25 shouting that I want to save the world and my children from impending doom?

I would get sectioned.

Why would that happen to you specifically?
WalkingOnTheCracks · 29/10/2021 12:20

5G, microchips, lizard people, area 51, tin foil, country going to the dogs, foreigners taking out jobs, too much money spent on rehabilitation, throwing money away on overseas aid, policitcal correctness gone mad, aromatherapy, eating crusts give you curly hair

...all very funny. Except the lizard people. That's true. And they're not actually lizards. They're projections from the lower fourth dimension who represent as lizards. Well, as lizards who represent as people. Like the Queen. And Ken Barlow.

David Icke wrote a book on it. He has curly hair, as it happens. Which says it all really. Open and shut case.

jetadore · 29/10/2021 12:26

You are making excuses. The behaviour of IB is being used to excuse and reinforce the complete apathy that has lead to their existence in the first place. The amount of vitriol in this thread is evidence that people are conditioned to maintain the status quo and fight change that doesn't come via "approved" (controlled) channels.

ivykaty44 · 29/10/2021 13:21

It was much the same with protests 100 years ago trying to obtain equality for voting. There were many against the changes and the distruption wasn’t welcome

LemonSwan · 29/10/2021 13:28

WalkingOnTheCracks

Because I would be a danger to myself and others.

Yes we are allowed to make unwise decisions and they might argue they have capacity to endanger themselves and others.

But once they start spouting that the must walk up and down the motorway or lie in the middle in order to save the world from impending doom and mass deaths then it gets pretty borderline. Thats quite disordered thinking.

And yes I have previously had delusions/ psychosis and been sectioned. So I try to keep a grip on what would be disordered thinking/ what not when I am well so I can hopefully recognise it if it ever returns.

If I did that - I would consider it disordered. So I am not going to think they are exempt.

'Approved channels' would be ones that don't involve glueing yourself to the street or preventing ambulances getting to hospitals ,surely? Sounds sensible to me.
You can see the cause but still be raising an eyebrow at their ways of going about it.

The protest group said the decision to stop sitting in the middle of roads had been made following "feedback" from frustrated drivers

Hmm

... the direct action becomes symbolic of the changes that occurred

I'd suggest the key word there is "symbolic" - otherwise known as trying to get the credit for something which actually came about through the efforts of others

Hence the thing about the suffragettes "getting women the vote" when history shows it's their war efforts which did that. It's a shame all those excellent women so often miss out on the credit, but then hard practical work isn't as exciting as locking yourself to things, shouting and having a bit of a dance
