"To reduce your speed to 20mph to reduce the risk of accidents"

Um... Or perhaps they should thinking about scraping their backsides off the tarmac of a busy motorway during rush hour?!

Here we go again...

@TSSDNCOP

Well, the suffragettes threw themselves under horses to get the right to vote.

A suffragette ran out on the track in front of the King's horse, when the jockey was lucky to escape with concussion.

But what's your point?

If you want things to change you’ve got to take action?

Though in light of your comment, I suppose a better point would be “nobody remembers the jockey”.

Nietzschethehiker · 28/10/2021 00:58

I swear if I believed in conspiracy theories, which I don't on the grounds I don't believe for a second our government is intelligent or capable enough to mastermind and run a successful conspiracy, I would think they were government plants because surely no actual activitist in their right minds think this is doing anything other than hurt their cause and make it so unsupportive and laughable that they have actively made it worse.

I mean think about it, if the government wants a way to undermine activism they are handing it to them on a plate.

They are very effective at making themselves seem ignorant , uninformed, callous and frankly just plain stupid. Do they not listen to themselves talk in interviews? Do they not see how badly they are damaging their own cause?

At this point if they want people to listen they would be best promising they will never leave their own homes and promising to read a book that has more than ten pages and has never been published as an article on buzzfeed.

Tealightsandd · 28/10/2021 00:58

The suffragettes didn't get women the vote. In fact they lost support for the cause (just as the Insulate mob are doing for climate change). It was women's efforts and work in WW1 that got women the vote.

But anyhow that's irrelevant really. I believe at least one of Insulate or their parent group, XR, have admitted their real 'cause' of anarchy and disruption.

Sparklingbrook · 28/10/2021 00:58

I don’t think this lot are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for their cause TBF.
They might be glueing themselves to the road but they know nobody would actually dare run them over. Hmm

Tealightsandd · 28/10/2021 01:00

With sewage disposal in the news, I wonder perhaps whether it might be environmentally friendly to recycle it through a water canon...?

jetadore · 28/10/2021 01:30

“Climate change is terrible, something must be done!”

/does something

“No, not like that.”

Best we all just keep to bleating about it on social media, eh?

WanderleyWagon · 28/10/2021 01:38

I get why people are frustrated with Insulate Britain, but honestly, they are trying to draw attention to an issue which the government and the whole country seem to be trying to pretend doesn't exist.

Sure, the govt. pretends it's aiming for net zero, but it's not walking the walk.

Fair play to them for trying to do something when most of the rest of us are sitting on our arses and not actually doing much to address the problem.

jetadore · 28/10/2021 01:58

Yes they lost support for a cause that had politely been going on and being ignored for decades without any progress (rings a bell). Pure coincidence that suffrage was achieved a few years after shit got real (horses, etc.). Of course I understand it’s entrenched in the British psyche that everything must be attributed to WW1/2.

That’s exactly it. Don’t do it like that. Because they’ll look like loons. Which they do.
BettyBag · 28/10/2021 07:16

We are literally on the verge of apocalypse. We need huge societal change. More power to them. If had less to lose I would sat with them.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 28/10/2021 07:21

I get their cause but the way they're doing it seems to be having the complete opposite effect. Rather then getting people talking about it they're just getting more and more pissed off. Plus they seem to have the worst people to be interviewed.

That and stopping people getting to work..the woman with her mum the other week..someone is going to snap

antsinyourpanta · 28/10/2021 07:31

But how is them sitting in the road actually' doing something for climate change?

If they were investigating or creating cheaper, eco friendly insulation, or providing advice on what grants or schemes were available (im pretty sure the government do, or definitely used to run various initiatives on getting your loft insulated) or advising on the best energy tariffs etc then that would be more productive....but gain them no headlines. But the headlines are that they are causing a disruption, not that anything has happened to improve climate change because of them.

110APiccadilly · 28/10/2021 07:34

@Finknottlesnewt

This is a perfect example of how to take an issue that has broad agreement and support - and completely fuck it up to the degree that it has completely alienated everyone .
They're so good at this, I've found myself wondering if they're a false flag operation. And I'm not normally given to conspiracy theories.

They're probably just self righteous idiots though.

jetadore · 28/10/2021 07:49

If you protest within the limits prescribed by those in power to nothing will change because it’s in their interests for it not to. There are also millions of “I’m alright” Jacks conditioned to not want change and resist it on their behalf.

We’d still be paying the poll tax if people hadn’t kicked off, I wonder what people on here would have made of them had MN been around.

Do you really believe that their bizarre antics are helping their cause? That glueing themselves to the road and ranting manically on morning TV is going to make a huge difference? Confused It’s just switching people off from whatever the messages is.
bordersroaming · 28/10/2021 08:40

It doesn't matter if you get switched off

What matters is that governments know that when a large enough portion of a population is that angry they may lose control of the country and that tends to motivate them

Insulate Britain isn't asking you to do anything , it's asking the government to. So unless you are going to wage counter Demos , your opinion doesn't Matter to the government

Sparklingbrook · 28/10/2021 08:45

It doesn't matter if you get switched off

It does though. They need support presumably they need to recruit more people to carry on the bizarre road glueing shenanigans

CatJumperTwat · 28/10/2021 09:16

Having a child isn't the worst thing you can do

Yes, it is.

I mean follow that logic , the best thing for the planet is for us all to Kill ourselves now

Yes, that's true. But you don't have to take logic to its ultimate extreme, and not creating a new person is much, much more ethical than killing an existing one.

The far better goal is to learn to live within the limits of the planet

Yes. By drastically reducing the population - through having fewer children, not by killing existing people.

3scape · 28/10/2021 09:39

Their actions remind me of Good Omens and humans playing both the good and evil just for money. They seem the sort of organisation that could be just as easily discretely supported by either genuine pro fuel rich bastards or genuine pro environmental rich bastards BUT they are all too damned stupid to even figure it out. Someone is patting them on the head and spoon feeding them.

TSSDNCOP · 28/10/2021 10:28

Let's pause for a second and consider that over 100 police officers needed hospital treatment after the London Poll Tax protest, and that arguably the real success of opposition protest was through people simply not paying it in staggering numbers and taking advantage of its administrative burden.

I have no issue with protest, I have protested, and would protest on climate change.

I will not protest with this shit shower who haven't even put their money where their mouths are, can't pull together an articulate credible spokesperson, are sticking themselves to the floor with toxic Loctite Henkel products produced in you guessed it and are stopping ordinary people getting to jobs, school and hospitals.

That's where I am with this.

In other news there's a Menopause march in Parliament Square tomorrow, which sounds good and no glue involved.

If we're going to talk about ''i'm alright jack''s the biggest of them is right here on this thread Hmm
bordersroaming · 28/10/2021 11:34

I'm going to turn this round

Why are you all not demanding that low cost , low tech , job creating insulation isn't being fitted urgently to the housing stock of people today who this winter will face a choice of heat or eat

?

Cash to support the deployment of heat pumps could insulate many more homes and for heat pumps to work homes must first be insulated

So The cash for heat pump will go to the rich who can afford to live on well insulated homes

Whilst the ill continues to spew out gases from the bulk of its housing stock
