To be pi**ed off at behaviour of 4x4 driver

Earlier today I pulled out of a side road to park my rather humble ford focus after having a good look. dd asleep in the back, when I got beeped my the driver of a 4x4 BMW monstrosity who'd roared up behind me going at about 40mph (I live on school lane and it's called that for a very valid reason 3 schools within half a mile) in a 20zone.

As I parked he then pulled up beside me and started tapping his head as in "are you mental?" gesture, I shrugged and mouthed "what" at him in response and he went to get out of the car!!?! His passenger stopped him in time tho and he just roared off.

I'm fuming who the f**k do these idiots think they are!?!

And yes, I am ranting against 4x4 drivers, I know I'm making a massive generalisation and before you jump in no, I'm not jealous because I can't afford one!!

here we go again!

Saturn74 · 10/12/2007 16:10

What a horrible confrontation - lucky that your DD was asleep.
Sounds like he'd still be a twat whether in a 4x4 or on a moped.

starfish2 · 10/12/2007 16:10

Peacelily, I agree with the word 'monstrosity' describing those things.
YANBU.

nametaken · 10/12/2007 16:13

And that's about all you can expect from these people.

peacelily · 10/12/2007 16:13

Yes I am going again because I'm so SICK OF IT round here. I live opposite a school and several of the parents drive these things and TBH they're a menace, they hem you in, park on double yellows, give you nasty glares if you don't jump the lights at the end of the road when they're usually about a millimetre behind you.

They're an urban nightmare

Desiderata · 10/12/2007 16:13

They're also very good at totally drenching pedestrians on wet days. It must be because they're higher up and therefore can't see the large volumes of lapping against the pavement.

Desiderata · 10/12/2007 16:14

... of water, that is.

Is it reasonable to speak to the headmaster of the school about the parking issue? It's getting so that I feel I need to do something

A woman did this to me a few years ago after my driving offended her. Followed me. Got out of her car at traffic lights. Opened my driver door and punched me in the face after calling em a few names. She was driving a van though, not a 4x4......

Like humphreycushion said...it was the idiot behind the wheel that was horrible to you. Not the car he was driving.

Desiderata · 10/12/2007 16:19
starfish2 · 10/12/2007 16:21

Yes, you are right PrincessSnowLife. But the percentage of idiots driving Chelsea Tractors seems to be absurdly high when compared to people driving cars.

MrsFogi · 10/12/2007 16:23

Awful behaviour but I don't think it stems from him being a 4x4 driver more a personality problem he would have even if driving a Robin Reliant.

NAB3littlemonkeys · 10/12/2007 16:23

Is the fact he was driving a 4 x 4 relevant or would any driver doing that have annoyed you? I find people don't listen to you when you criticise a car they drive.

peacelily · 10/12/2007 16:29

If anyone had been intimidating and rude I would have been annoyed and trust me in the past I've tried to be open minded on this issue but the hard cold fact is that IME 90% of idiocy and rudeness on the roads is from 4x4 drivers, round here anyway.

He would have still been an idiot if on a moped I'm sure but for me his car is the personification of a nasy, bullying, intimidatory personality.

Right or wrong that's my opinion

OP posts:
PrincessSnowLife · 10/12/2007 16:31

I make an effort not to hate people based on the cars they drive / the brand of clothing they wear / their haircuts / their accents / their eye colour / their nationalities / the shops they buy in / whatever.

That way I don't get carried away with immediately finding fault with anything they do, and using that characteristic to attribute blame. And so, I lead a fairly peaceful life. But that's just me. And I tend to be a bit too smug on the whole. Hey, I probably drive a 4x4 for all you know - that would explain it!

ajandjjmum · 10/12/2007 16:33

And the parents travelling to schools around you are unreasonable too? Were the schools built after you moved in?

StarofBethleCam · 10/12/2007 16:38

bet you keep your door locked now though princesssnowlife

mynameisnic · 10/12/2007 16:40

it would be perfectly acceptable to speak to the head teacher of the school if, as a neighbour of the school, you are experiencing problems due to parents parking or driving their cars in an inconsiderate fashion. The Head Teacher of ds's school regularly sends missives home about just this sort of issue.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 10/12/2007 16:41

So you pulled out of a side road and failed to see a monstrous 4x4 coming up the road you were pulling into?

(yes, I see he was apparently speeding but it is very difficult to estimate speed if you are stationary at the time)

YuleLoveHekateAtSolstice · 10/12/2007 16:47

IME, the worst drivers are those driving subaroos (sp) and those where you've got 10 people crammed into a 15 yr old ford.

Wonder why that is.

paulaplumpbottom · 10/12/2007 16:49

You are making a generalisation and you probably are jealous. What you should have said was this driver pissed me off. If he had been in a focus now you wouldn't be posting. Its 4x4 envy

YuleLoveHekateAtSolstice · 10/12/2007 16:49

And I've just reread op and realised you drive an old ford. This was not a dig at your car. I meant the boy racer types.

DeePancrisPaneven · 10/12/2007 16:52

nice message princess, if you don't mind.

cherryredretrochick · 10/12/2007 16:52

I think 4 x 4 envy is a very common thing, when you live in a city in England and get snow 2 days a year. I know I have it. . do have a 4x4 pram does the same count?
