To be pi**ed off at behaviour of 4x4 driver

Earlier today I pulled out of a side road to park my rather humble ford focus after having a good look. dd asleep in the back, when I got beeped my the driver of a 4x4 BMW monstrosity who'd roared up behind me going at about 40mph (I live on school lane and it's called that for a very valid reason 3 schools within half a mile) in a 20zone.

As I parked he then pulled up beside me and started tapping his head as in "are you mental?" gesture, I shrugged and mouthed "what" at him in response and he went to get out of the car!!?! His passenger stopped him in time tho and he just roared off.

I'm fuming who the f**k do these idiots think they are!?!

And yes, I am ranting against 4x4 drivers, I know I'm making a massive generalisation and before you jump in no, I'm not jealous because I can't afford one!!

I did for a while, Starofbethlecam! Definitely! Time heals though.

Thanks, DeePancrisPaneven... I think... sorry, but wasn't sure what you meant... was that a 'nice message, you are very witty' (and if so, gee thanks [eyelash flutter]) or 'nice message, be nicer next time'??

peacelily · 10/12/2007 17:11

Hee hee it's so not jealousy, that makes me chuckle! Some people are so deluded. If i wanted a 4x4 or a similarly priced vehicle I'd buy one and cut back money in other areas. Driving a "statement" vehicle is not a priority for me.

I don't mind being beeped if I make a mistake drving, it's what you need to shock you into paying attention, it's NOT neccessary however to follow it up with lairy gestures and intimidating behaviour.

WTF ?????
sorry but am sick and tired of people trying to label all 4x4 drivers the same.how stupid and narrow minded are you ? yes i drive a 4x4, no it's no one else's business and yes i do get pissed off with people toodling along in dinky little cars when i need to get somewhere.

you see notjustmum, it's exactly this sort of angry attitude we're talking about - all you've done is prove us right.

DeePancrisPaneven · 10/12/2007 17:17

oh, flutter away princess!! - I meant I thought it was a nice post, humourous, and with a good message, IMHO

needmorecoffee · 10/12/2007 17:17

did you see Top Gear the other week with Clarkson and co driving 'normal' cars in the African Bush and saying to the camera 'see, you don't need a 4x4 in Essex'
Unless you are a farmer.
And I'll add, just cos I'm feeling hormonal, lots of people with cars don't need cars. Polluting mosntrosities....

needmorecoffee · 10/12/2007 17:19

notjustmum - I get fed up with 4x4 drivers clogging the roads when I'm on a bus and needing to get somewhere. Buses would be a lot quicker if there weren't all those cars in the way, usually with one person in

PrincessSnowLife · 10/12/2007 17:20

phew! glad it hadn't come across as mean, then!

(Btw, if anyone runs out of things to say on this thread and is looking for inspiration, there are 34 other threads along the same lines available if you do a search. And that's just the ones with 4x4 in the title. Plenty of insults to be repeated on the monthly MN '4x4 drivers are t#@ts vs car drivers are t#@ts' debate.)

paulaplumpbottom 'you probably are jealous'... oh come off it. You must be American (or a Clarkson reader perhaps)????

Sooooo...let's all get jealous of a hideous square monstrosity which renders even its own drivers (as well as everyone else who has to 'share' the road with them) unable to travel across London roads, as I witness daily...

I suppose I am slightly jealous of their incredible detachment from reality and ability to discount the impact of their bizarre 'security' consciousness on themselves and others.

Typical 4x4 idiot (middle aged male in huge silver monster) lurching around a corner yesterday on Lordship Lane when I was already crossing the road. The tw*t expected me to stop in the middle of a previously clear road with pram and 4 year old .

Moped/motorbike drivers and drivers of suspiciously battered vehicles are just as bad of course, but they don't add environmental destruction and insufferable smugness to their list of crime.

ajandjjmum · 10/12/2007 18:01

Obviously anyone who needs a 4 x 4 for everyday use, should keep an additional small car for when they visit town.

paulaplumpbottom · 10/12/2007 18:01

And only 4x4 drivers act that way. Oh please. I had a woman be a real bitch to me the other day when I dropped a blanket in the road this afternoon. She was driving a golf. Am I to deduse that all Golf owners are bitches? Of Course not. But then again, I'm not envious of the golf so thats probably the diffrence.

I am an American and I think Clarkson is hysterical.

peacelily · 10/12/2007 18:07

TBH I think it's just plain wierd when people use the "jealousy" angle in this debate.

Please please don't tar us all with your way of thinking, because I for one have got a lot more important things to think about.

I WAS pissed off, feel a bit calmer now. Can't stand 4x4s but for those of you who say it's judgmental to tar all 4x4 drivers with the same brush you're right. I'm being judgmental and prejudiced and in my rational mind I know that.

Its just sometimes you reach saturation point......

Domesticgodlessyoumerrygents · 10/12/2007 18:15

mmmm. So I must also be 'jealous' of all the drivers of pedal cycles who have pissed me off this week?

But by all means stay in that nice little bubble where everyone is 'jealous' of you....lalalala

edam · 10/12/2007 18:21

I wouldn't have a 4x4 even if someone offered me one free - far too dangerous to other road users, especially children. And intimidating and downright selfish. (Well, I wouldn't let dh have one, I don't actually drive, which is why I hate them - ds and I are pedestrians who are far more at risk from these monsters than from ordinary cars.)

Crap driving in an ordinary car is bad enough, in a 4x4 it's far more likely to get someone killed. And 4x4s make the drivers feel safer, hence more likely to take risks.

ajandjjmum · 10/12/2007 18:25

Any car is dangerous in the wrong hands.

Freckle · 10/12/2007 18:28

I hate the blardy things too. I live on a street where there is parking on both sides of the road with occasional passing spaces. Now, most cars take it in turns to stop to let others through but, 99 times out of 100, a 4x4 driver will sail through just expecting everyone else to pull over. Just because they can. They know other cars won't challenge them because they'd come off worse. I've even seen them enter the "single-track" part when another car was already there and then expect the other car to back up.

It's a bit chicken and egg, isn't it? Do the drivers become like that because they are in that type of car or do they buy that type of car because of the way they are?

steady domestic.....

cyclists are the most vulnerable of road users. We risk a lot when we cycle to work/where ever. The VAST MAJORITY of car drivers are very polite and make allowance for our vulnerabilities.

But when I read "oh a cyclist pissed me off today" I just want to gaffaw!! Because one went through on a red light? Or wobbled into your path? Or just got somwhere in heavy traffic quicker then you??
