Anyone else feeling depressed about Covid?

bluetuesdayy · 19/10/2021 18:38

Cases, deaths and hospitalisations all rising.

Media drip feeding about pressure on the NHS and new variants.

Feel like it's Groundhog Day with this government. Surely they cannot lock us down completely again?

I am feeling decidedly twitchy. I have not felt this way since November last year.

PinkiOcelot · 19/10/2021 18:41

Tbh, no.

bluetuesdayy · 19/10/2021 18:41

@Northernsoullover I hope we can at least get through until the new year without a fullllockdown.

Why get depressed about something you can't control? Just take as many reasonable mitigating measures as you can. It's all you can do.

VladmirsPoutine · 19/10/2021 18:43

I wonder as you say because of the drip drip drip and a record number today if they're actually laying the groundwork to announce a lockdown of sorts. So essentially a lockdown in all but name i.e. 'only essential travel. A mask mandate must surely be on the cards.

bluetuesdayy · 19/10/2021 18:43

@ilovesooty I'm getting married first week of Dec, postponed from last Dec. It's gutting.

I don't think we will be locked down again, but I think masks will become compulsory again.

I was in a DIY store on Sunday and was only one of a handful of people wearing a mask.

DoctorSnortles · 19/10/2021 18:46

How about people wear masks and keep their bloody distance, for starters?

It’s all very well flinging oneself around about lockdowns, but if people wore masks, stopped breathing on each other and stopped pretending that Covid isn’t caught from sitting around chatting in enclosed spaces we might be able to get a handle on it.

Secondary school kids need to be back in masks, too. Case rates are insanely high in my school, thanks to the government guidelines which are basically ‘Pretend Covid doesn’t exist. Open a window, but only if no-one will get too chilly.’

Oh I see where you're coming from now.

I hope it does go ahead for you.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 19/10/2021 18:53

If people would stop wiping down things that haven’t even been touched and open a bloody window instead we might have a chance.

This. I was in mainland Europe last week. Everyone calmly wearing masks, distancing, following rules, keeping to arrows on floors in museums, restaurant tables distances nicely.

Got back to Heathrow and hardly any fucker wearing a mask, most of those who are wearing them under their noses, and getting right up close in queues.

Country of absolute muppets.

Bloody hell, yes. Cover yourself in sanitiser but don’t wear a mask or open a window. That’ll sort it!

I find restrictions more depressing than actual virus

Like many we’ve had it recently, we’ve been pretty good for ages with complying. But yeh people calling out for more restrictions is what I find annoying.

Unanananana · 19/10/2021 18:57

There won't be a full lockdown as the majority of people are vaccinated. The government will not want to fund anymore furlough. Masks and social distancing may reappear.

Covid will not go away but people are refusing to cower in their homes. The media are shit-stirring as always which gives the frothers lots to talk about.

I hope your wedding goes ahead.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 19/10/2021 18:58

I'm not depressed but I certainly am weary of it dragging on.

And every time I see someone say "Case rates are insanely high in my school" I just think "Still?!". Because I've been seeing that so long I wonder how they all haven't got it over with already.

userchange987 · 19/10/2021 18:59

No, I haven't heard or read anything about Covid in weeks, months even. My life is completely back to normal now. I understand being twitchy with your wedding, but try not to let it ruin the run up, we are in a very different place to what we were.

VladmirsPoutine · 19/10/2021 19:00

I really think masks should be mandatory (ofc with appropriate exemptions). They're absolutely brilliant for all manner of reasons not including covid.

Oh, ok. Let’s just pretend everything is fine then. Rightio.

Personally, I find it pretty depressing that loads of people are becoming ill unnecessarily because some people are a bit fed up with wearing a mask and keeping their distance.

bumblingbovine49 · 19/10/2021 19:00

This is the result of the black and white and all or nothing thinking so popular in this country at the moment.

There is no need to lock down but it is also bonkers to think we can just ignore Covid or ' live with it' as the hard of thinking seem to keep spouting

I have family in Italy at the moment and they are still wearing masks, having to show a green pass to go into most venues and although schools are running in person they are still using mitigations. They are not locked down. People can go about their business and continue to do.so but not completely without any precautions

Yes there are some protests and some people are bit fed up of the mitgations in place but the vast majority accept them and follow them . If you haven't been vaccinated you have to test 3 times a week to go to work and this is closely monitored by most employers. My family agree they find it a bit annoying having to give details or show an ID card/ passport everywhere but they are going into winter much much much less likely to be facing an overwhelmed healthcare system than we are as their infection rates are much lower than ours at the moment

Of course we don't need to lock down even if the NHS is overwhelmed this winter in fact we almost certainly won't unless people are are dying on the streets which is highly unlikely I think . Many people won't personally notice if the NHS is overwhelmed anyway as they will stay healthy and not need it but God help those who do need healthcare this winter

MarshaBradyo · 19/10/2021 19:01

Up to you Doctor

You can’t dictate how others feel. As much as you probably want to.

I don't think you would find restrictions more annoying than the virus if you caught it.
MatildaIThink · 19/10/2021 19:02

I can't see there being another lockdown, or even a mask mandate, vaccines have been available for all adults for months now, children are at a risk so low they are more likely to die in a car crash on the way to school than of Covid.

The impact of all the lockdowns is far greater, schooling hugely disrupted, child developmental delays, cancer screenings misses, operations delayed, mental health problems skyrocketing, jobs lost, huge debts.

People die, some more will die of Covid this winter, but the cost of another lockdown will be greater than the cost of staying open.

MarshaBradyo · 19/10/2021 19:03

Did you not read the post where I said we’ve had it in household Confused

You do realise for many it’s mild don’t you. Particularly after double vaccination.

What an odd assumption.

You do understand there are lots of schools in different areas? We have about 15% of our kids out, which is the highest number we’ve had throughout the pandemic.

Of course you also know that you can catch Covid more than once? And that in some parts of the country none of our under 16s have been vaccinated? Rates ARE insanely high in secondary schools. We’re not making it up for a laugh.

Bagelsandbrie · 19/10/2021 19:06

I’m a bit Shock at the deaths etc today and wondering if we’re going down a rabbit hole again. I think everyone ditched the masks and distancing a bit too quickly.
