Anyone else feeling depressed about Covid?

Cases, deaths and hospitalisations all rising.

Media drip feeding about pressure on the NHS and new variants.

Feel like it's Groundhog Day with this government. Surely they cannot lock us down completely again?

@fashionSOS

It's not the number of cases that I find depressing, it's the people who don't wear masks, who clearly aren't exempt, because they wear them on their chin.

It just feels like another issue that has divided the country in half.

Tories vs non-Tories.

Brexit vs no Brexit.

Masks vs no masks.

I feel increasingly despondent that as a country, we're so divided on everything, all of the time. I think the reason why I feel so sad is because I don't feel the UK has a national identity anymore, let alone me.

Everything is always cleanly down the middle.

Why wear a mask? The reality is that it makes less than a five percent reduction in the transmission of the virus, transmission which in public spaces was already incredibly low anyway. Around 70% of transmission is happening in homes, around 25% in schools, less than five percent is happening in workplaces and public spaces.

The masks vs no masks is a red herring, it is a visible way to feel righteous, but it makes no real difference to the spread of the virus. The issue with Covid appears to be more a split between the terrified and the rational.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 19/10/2021 21:12

I think the rates are so high due to the ridiculous amount of testing going on. It needs to stop. Children should not be tested at all.

Life needs to carry on and no, masks have no place at all in schools.

Getting me down a bit today because ds2 has a positive LFT, is symptomatic and we are all now stuck in waiting PCR results.

I’ve been working since the start with vulnerable older patients, even had covid on the ward at one point and managed not to get it or bring it home but it seems to have snuck in via DS2 and sixth form!

Work is in chaos due to nurses isolating awaiting PCR’s and it just feels relentless.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 19/10/2021 21:14

I haven't worn a mask since beginning of September but l keep my distance and wash my hands. Why isn't everyone doing this? The restrictions are relaxed, not gone.

tiredanddangerous · 19/10/2021 21:18

Yes but then I work in a school. Covid is still having a massive impact on childrens education. We have so many children and staff off sick. Sixth form students are literally being emailed PowerPoints and being told to teach themselves because there isn't anyone there to teach them.

KrispyKale · 19/10/2021 21:27

No I'm not depressed about it.

Just encourage anyone you know who is eligible to go get a vaccine / booster.

KrispyKale · 19/10/2021 21:28

I have heard of a couple of deaths locally of people who refused vaccination. It's sad.

HermioneWeasley · 19/10/2021 21:29

@MatildaIThink stop with your inconvenient facts! People want to hand wring and virtue signal.

We are doing more testing that any other European countries, of course our infection rate appears “higher”.

Sunset999 · 19/10/2021 21:30

Why masks were stopped amazed me , should keep mask wearing and distancing for the full year 2021 at least, it isn't that hard?

Sunset999 · 19/10/2021 21:32

Random one but did anyone like the lockdowns? I did....slower pace of life, quiet roads and got to really appreciate simple things

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 19/10/2021 21:33

No and I will not be wearing masks again either. I'd rather people kept their distance tbh

Sunset999 · 19/10/2021 21:34

Why? Masks are such a simple thing to wear, I really do not understand why people refuse to wear them....

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 19/10/2021 21:35

I hate them and I think wearing a piece of cloth over your mouth does nothing.

Sunset999 · 19/10/2021 21:37

It does make a difference reducing transmission.....................

KrispyKale · 19/10/2021 21:39

The basic medical ones have been shown to help at a community level haven't they? In a study in Bangladesh?
Opening windows is a good idea but it gets less likely in public places as the temperature drops.

Yes, loved it. All my support networks removed. Illegal to use my coping mechanisms. I tried to kill myself during the first lockdown. Yes, great stuff. Can't wait for the next one.
Sunset999 · 19/10/2021 21:41

Your view on it and im sorry you tried to kill yourself in first lockdown, guess it affects us all differently, I really liked it as really slowed down and appreciated life more, now its gone back to the mad mad world..........

MarshaBradyo · 19/10/2021 21:43

Xeno Flowers

I very much hope we don’t go back to it, the damage is huge.

Sunset999 · 19/10/2021 21:44

I agree it is damaging but only as the lockdowns went on, the first one was quite nice, but that's my view so understand not everyone shares it. The later ones not so fun of course but copeable,

Thanks. I hope so too.
rrhuth · 19/10/2021 21:47

Yes it is just frustrating watching the cases rise and services buckle whilst we all are supposed to pretend it isn't happening.

Sunset999 · 19/10/2021 21:48

Sorry to cast doom but be prepared for a shorter lockdown over winter, it may happen if the Nhs is under too much pressure x

bluetuesdayy · 19/10/2021 21:50

@Sunset999 when in winter?

Sunset999 · 19/10/2021 21:51

I dont know as dont work for the Government .....

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/10/2021 21:53

@Mamamia7962

I don't think we will be locked down again, but I think masks will become compulsory again.

I was in a DIY store on Sunday and was only one of a handful of people wearing a mask.

I hope they do! So many people not wearing them on the London tube today - where it is supposed to be compulsory. We need to get way tougher.
