Anyone else feeling depressed about Covid?

295 replies

bluetuesdayy · 19/10/2021 18:38

Cases, deaths and hospitalisations all rising.

Media drip feeding about pressure on the NHS and new variants.

Feel like it's Groundhog Day with this government. Surely they cannot lock us down completely again?

Well, my kids’ school have closed a few classes including my daughter’s due to the sheer numbers of students and staff with covid, and we’re back to the joys of juggling home-schooling and working. And there are so many teachers sick that they can’t even manage to do any teams lessons so my daughter’s working her way through White Rose Maths and joyless powerpoints. It feels very deja-vu and my 10 year old is certainly pretty depressed about it.

@chocolateorangeinhaler

Why is everyone thinking going back to masks will suddenly make covid disappear?

Newsflash - it won't. Ever.

People need to be vaccinated unless there is a valid medical reason as to why they can't. The government had a public consultation on if the vaccine should be mandatory a few months ago. I wonder if the results are now in and our choice will be masks and lockdown or compulsory vaccine.

Exactly. We have them in Scotland. 99.9% of people were wearing them in Aldi an hour ago. Hasn't helped us.
DerAlteMann · 20/10/2021 21:16

No, not really. How will it help the situation?

* No societal responsibility factoring into your thinking evidently.*

Oh I’m done with it.

Going back to masks wont make it disappear but makes a huge difference to transmission, hoping Government bring back compulsory mask wearing and social distancing , should never have been removed so quickly. Its no great hardship is it?

KrispyKale · 21/10/2021 08:44

Society provides vaccination programmes, society ensures ( or is trying!) an adequate vaccine take up, society should be able to come up with safer public places with useful mitigations based on learning accrued on transmission. Society may provide the bed and care when you or a loved one gets pneumonia.
We are rather stuck with being members of society if we want to protect ourselves and our family.

BonnesVacances · 21/10/2021 08:47

I'm more depressed about how it's exposed people's stupidity and inability to assimilate information. And just how binary people can be with no shades of grey.

DoraMaude · 21/10/2021 08:56

I've been very unwell with a cold for several weeks now. More ill than I've been for a long time and it's made me anxious about getting unwell again. Last time I was on the tube only about 20% of people were wearing masks, yet it's supposed to be mandatory on TFL. I feel quite depressed that some people aren't willing to do the small things that make it easier for us all and might help us avoid another lockdown.

Sunset999 · 21/10/2021 09:39

Exactly, because people here are selfish

Jourdain11 · 21/10/2021 09:44

I honestly couldn't care less if someone wears a pointless bit of cloth over their face on the tube or not. If I don't want to sit next to someone without a mask I won't. There is an element of taking personal responsibility also.

So take covid out of the equation

Are you saying you want masks to stop spread of the common cold?

You realise your children and family and friends are all part of society, right? You know when your children go to school or need healthcare - that’s provided by our society?

I think you mean ‘people I don’t know’. But ‘society’ doesn’t mean that.

Oh come on! Planty of people could not get to work if they were going to take this stance. So few people are wearing masks now.
Reallyimeanreally2022 · 21/10/2021 15:56

@julieca

Why couldn’t they get to work? What are you disagreeing with that poster about? I can’t work it out!

MatildaIThink · 22/10/2021 11:04

@AveryGoodlay

I got a BSc in Biomedical Science, followed by a masters, followed by a PhD and a career in research, all from UK universities, where did you get yours? Are UK universities somehow the only universities that can be trusted, in your opinion? What's wrong with universities from outside of the UK?
There are many good universities outside the UK, I have some amazing colleagues who got their degrees or doctorates in them. The reason I mentioned UK is that there quite often on here when people have multiple accusations is that they got them from some dodgy online university in other parts of the world.

The other poster is saying if you don't want to travel next to someone not wearing a mask don't. Where I am hardly anyone is wearing masks, unless elderly, I am. Buses to work are crowded, especially at the moment as there is a lack of bus drivers. So you either get a crowded bus to work with virtually no one wearing a mask, or you don't go to work. The personal responsibility stchickt is the language of privileged people with lots of choices.

Thecurliestwurly · 22/10/2021 14:45

I was worried as it would still be nice to go to the gym (let's face it, it helps reduce obesity, which certainly helps with COVID and every other health issue), but I think they will just start with mandatory mask wearing in shops and limitations on large events first.

Reallyimeanreally2022 · 22/10/2021 15:00

@julieca

What’s to stop them from wearing a mask?

julieca · 22/10/2021 15:07

@Reallyimeanreally2022 Nothing. But if hardly anyone else is wearing a mask, you really arent that protected. You just have to take your chances though.

Syrup6 · 22/10/2021 15:33

I am as I’ve currently got it and I feel absolutely grim. The lax rules around schools have brought this to my door so I would like a tightening of the rules around this for sure.
