Does anyone iron anymore?

Not really an AIBU but posting for traffic. I hate ironing but so it anyway.

Does anyone iron clothes anymore or is it just me?
More and more often I'm hearing and reading about people aghast at the thought of ironing and that they never do any.

If you don't iron, how to you keep your clothes crease free, e g. cotton shirts and blouses?

I just like to have them folded and ironed in a drawer..

ProcrastinationIsMySuperPower · 17/10/2021 21:21

I don't iron anything, I don't need to, DH irons absolutely everything.

mafted · 17/10/2021 21:21

I iron. It's just part of the laundry process to me. I don't like to use much if any fabric softener and line or air dry most things. Ironing helps to soften the clothes and makes them easier to fold. It also helps to get rid of pollen from line dried clothes in hayfever season.

antsinyourpanta · 17/10/2021 21:30

Tea towels? Who cares if they look awful?

They pile up better in the draw if they're ironed (and I think ironing kills more germs)

HintofVintagePink · 17/10/2021 21:39

@DeepaBeesKit

I always find it interesting when people say "I love ironing, it gives me the chance to watch tv/listen to radio" etc.

You know you are allowed to just sit down and do those things and do nothing else at all while you do so?

I swear it's a very female curse, men don't have this requirement be doing something useful at all times, they sit watching telly with no guilt whatsoever that they aren't using that time to do housework.

Well yes, you could, but after you’ve finished listening to the radio or watching the television, the ironing would still need to be done.

@Maskedstranger

No. its an instrument of oppression!
Only if you choose to think that is! I actually like ironing, I find it very relaxing, sadly now it's just me I don't iron much, I have a new dryer for the bad weather and it seems to take out a lot of the creases. The other day I was rushing and put the duvet cover on unironed but next day the iron was out! I've started to put a fitted sheet on the bed then iron it there, works really well.
Chimley · 17/10/2021 21:44

I've just bought a hand held steamer. Will never iron again. Life changer!

DemBonesDemBones · 17/10/2021 21:46

Nope, I can't remember the last time I did! Husband irons shirts when needed but I don't get involved!

MrsToothyBitch · 17/10/2021 21:49

I iron. If something is in a fabric that doesn't need ironing, that's great but fabrics that require ironing look scruffy otherwise. Can't beat pressed sheets. I iron our bedding (but not fitted sheets) my muslin face cloths and my tea towels. They all feel nice and fresher for it, store better for it and don't take too long really.

Clothes wise it boils down to some shirts, a few dresses and a skirt, occasionally some scarves and a kimono gown of mine, and a couple of shirts and a polo shirt of DPs. Occasionally we press his chinos if the wardrobe has been hard on them but they're in quite a hardy fabric! I occasionally do precious things with a hairdryer or mini steamer. One dress that doesn't iron well but looks dishraggy unpressed gets steamed & only worn at home now. Neither of us is supermodelly enough to get away with looking like an unmade bed and since it's usually a couple of items every couple of washes, it's no trouble and no time to do. Plus I like a shit tv sesh whilst doing it!

FangsForTheMemory · 17/10/2021 21:50

I do but I save it up for about a month then do it all at once.

Nsky · 17/10/2021 21:51

I iron what I need to mainly summer stuff, not much tho

MrsToothyBitch · 17/10/2021 21:57

@Nskt my ironing goes down considerably when my linen summer dresses go away for the autumn, too.

imnotacelebritygetmeoutofhere · 17/10/2021 21:59

I didn't iron anything for about ten years, I just hung it all up while it was drying. I can't remember why I started but now I iron everything. I find it a really therapeutic relaxing job to do. I do it all on Sunday evening while I watch tv.

MyMoneyIsAllSpent · 17/10/2021 22:01

Nope.

OhGiveUp · 17/10/2021 22:05

My DH has got an iron. I have no idea where he keeps it, not do I want to.

MrsJBaptiste · 17/10/2021 22:09

Unlike most of MN I iron clothes, as do my friends and family.

Creased clothes look awful and yes, you can tell when tnings haven't been ironed even though all the non-ironers think otherwise.

lazylinguist · 17/10/2021 22:09

I’d love to know how people don’t need to iron

I'd love to know what it is you think would happen if you didn't iron! I only have a few garments that really need ironing, and they are ones I don't wear often. I mostly tumble dry, and if you take things straight out of the dryer and fold/hang them, they aren't creased. I avoid buying things that crease easily. But also I just don't particularly care about my clothes being totally crease-free!

lazylinguist · 17/10/2021 22:12

I think the non-ironers generally don't give a monkey's if you can tell they haven't ironed tbh! I certainly wouldn't. They probably also have a different definition of 'awful'. I've seen plenty of awful clothes, but their awfulness has been nothing to do with ironing!

ballroompink · 17/10/2021 22:17

I still iron and agree that stuff looks scruffy if not ironed. I mostly wear natural fibres and they really do need it. I don't iron tea towels though! Or other things like socks, children's school sweatshirts, joggers etc.

megletthesecond · 17/10/2021 22:20

Never.
Washing machine is on the shirts / blouses low iron cycle.
Dry almost everything on the line. Hang up as soon as its dry.

In the draw? Do you mean in the drawer? I've never had an issue with them not piling up well! As for ironing killing germs... ok. Hmm
GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 17/10/2021 22:29

I hate ironing with a passion so I do as little as possible. I only religiously iron school uniform. I have a couple of dresses that would look crap if not ironed so I do those too. But otherwise unless a rare occasion where I need to wear something smart I don’t bother.

checkoutchick22 · 17/10/2021 22:29

I don't iron a thing.
My child may go into school with a slightly creased school but it is clean and so is she. I just can't justify the time to iron, between working, washing clothes etc
I work with priorities

Everything in this house is ironed. Those who don't think it needs to be are deluded. There's a child in DD class who is always rumpled up of a morning. Looks bloody awful.
