Does anyone iron anymore?

Not really an AIBU but posting for traffic. I hate ironing but so it anyway.

Does anyone iron clothes anymore or is it just me?
More and more often I'm hearing and reading about people aghast at the thought of ironing and that they never do any.

If you don't iron, how to you keep your clothes crease free, e g. cotton shirts and blouses?

Nothing. Ever. Liberation

OverByYer · 17/10/2021 19:43

The bare minimum. My children have left school ( and home!) so no more shirts!
I have a few work clothes that need ironing but tend to buy a lot of jersey and viscose so they tend to dry crease free.

Monster2021 · 17/10/2021 19:56

People who don't look scruffy. You can say the drier takes out the creases etc to justify your laziness all you want you can tell.

SylvanasWindrunner · 17/10/2021 19:59

@DeepaBeesKit

I always find it interesting when people say "I love ironing, it gives me the chance to watch tv/listen to radio" etc.

You know you are allowed to just sit down and do those things and do nothing else at all while you do so?

I swear it's a very female curse, men don't have this requirement be doing something useful at all times, they sit watching telly with no guilt whatsoever that they aren't using that time to do housework.

This reminds me of a tea towel my mum has. It's a man and woman both making a cup of tea. Each panel of the man side is him just standing by the kettle waiting for it to boil. Each panel on the woman's side is her wiping the surfaces, putting washing in the machine, etc, while it boils Grin

I iron DDs school blouses and skirt. Also sometimes do DPs work trousers and polo tops.
Very infrequently iron a shirt for my own use.

Blah1881 · 17/10/2021 20:06

Never iron anything, ever. Family of 5.

burblish · 17/10/2021 20:06

I can’t bear to wear clothes out that haven’t been ironed - I feel scruffy and unkempt if I don’t iron them. DH and I also iron the DC’s clothes and school uniform. I don’t, however, iron nightclothes, bed linen, underclothes or tea towels.

DdraigGoch · 17/10/2021 20:06

I iron everything bar synthetic sports stuff. There's nothing like going to bed in freshly-laundered sheets which have been ironed.

VestaTilley · 17/10/2021 20:09

DH irons his own shirts.

I would iron an outfit if needed for a job interview or wedding, but mostly the stuff I own doesn’t need it. So I never do any.

When DS is old enough to have things which need ironing I’ll offer to share doing it with DH, but I expect DH will just do it as he’s doing his anyway.

Now we’ve finally bought a house which we’d like to look nice I’m considering ironing bedding, but that’s about it.

Honestmary · 17/10/2021 20:09

@DeepaBeesKit

I’d love to know how people don’t need to iron

Leggings, casual jeans and teeshirts. If you use a little fabric softener and give teeshirts a thorough shake before drying them flat, they dont need ironing.

Also drapey viscose type tops don't need ironing.

Oh I’m screwed with a lot of this, I don’t wear leggings or viscose tops, the cats would sit on anything laid flat, even if I had anywhere to lay them and we clearly have the wrong type of jeans as no way could we not iron them. I don’t do the washing so no idea what he uses but it smells nice.
teenmumandsowhat · 17/10/2021 20:10

Haven’t owned an iron in almost a decade! Was the one thing I gladly handed over to my ex and never bothered to replace! Grin

These days safety is a valid excuse for me not to iron, due to vision loss.
Also i cba.

My parents iron, my dad has always had to iron his own clothes though as my mum quite sensibly insisted that she didn’t want the stress of getting his work shirts done correctly!

Skysblue · 17/10/2021 20:10

Only shirts

Henrywilldoit · 17/10/2021 20:12

I iron some things but certainly not everything.

There's no denying that generally things are nicer when ironed, but no way am I standing for ages every week.

ISaidDontLickTheBin · 17/10/2021 20:14

@Toottooot

Never but don’t wear shirts or blouses.
Same! For work I wear dresses dried on hangers. And I avoid anything linen like the plague.
Berkeys · 17/10/2021 20:18

Buy a hand clothes steamer - total gamechanger!

furbabymama87 · 17/10/2021 20:19

Yes I iron. If something doesn't need it, I won't. And if something is hung up straight from the dryer it doesn't usually need ironing. But otherwise, yes.

LashesZ · 17/10/2021 20:21

I steam things. I cant iron, something about being left handed makes me get all tangled in the cord.

Notebooksarefabulous · 17/10/2021 20:21

I havent owned an ironing board in years. We air dry our clothes in the garden or on clothes airers indoors - with a dehumidifier they dry within a couple of days. And I only buy clothes that wont need ironing (doable as noone in this house wears shirts etc)

Kb2942 · 17/10/2021 20:25

I iron much less than I used to but yes I still iron - mainly school and work clothes!

Daphnise · 17/10/2021 20:25

I iron but not too much.

As has been said, you're only fooling yourself if you think creased clothes don't make you look like one of Fagin's kids in "Oliver".

MagpieMary · 17/10/2021 20:28

I can’t imagine not ironing. I iron tea towels and pillowcases, linen and shirts. I recently stopped ironing t shirts unless they are mine. I iron trousers and jeans. Some things look awful if they aren’t ironed.

Tea towels? Who cares if they look awful?
Wannabegreenfingers · 17/10/2021 20:30

I do. Each to their own, but personally unironed clothes look scruffy on me and my kids so we all have ironed clothes.

SirVixofVixHall · 17/10/2021 20:42

@antsinyourpanta

I just spent £350 on a new iron… i iron A LOT. Confused I do iron but blimey I could probably think of 350 other things I'd rather spend that much money on!!🤣
Well I do agree , many other things I would rather had bought and I am slightly regretting this purchase, but my previous steam generator iron had died and this one came up very well rated by Which. The previous one lasted about twelve years so hopefully this one will too, although it does have annoying aspects as well as good ones. I am in two minds about whether it was worth the expense.
Justcallmebebes · 17/10/2021 20:57

Yes of course
