Does anyone iron anymore?

Not really an AIBU but posting for traffic. I hate ironing but so it anyway.

Does anyone iron clothes anymore or is it just me?
More and more often I'm hearing and reading about people aghast at the thought of ironing and that they never do any.

If you don't iron, how to you keep your clothes crease free, e g. cotton shirts and blouses?

I don't iron about 90% of my clothes as they look fine after they've been hung up to dry, (don't have a tumble dryer). Once clothes are dry they all go in the wardrobe.

For the 10% that crease I have a hand-held steamer that I keep in the wardrobe. If I pick out something to wear that's creased, I hang it up on the back of the door, plug in the steamer which heats up in 30 seconds and then another 30 secs or so to steam out the creases. Can't be doing with having an ironing basket of clothes and the faff of getting the ironing board in and out of the cupboard etc!

I really enjoy ironing. It gives me the opportunity to listen to the radio in peace. I don't iron everything, we've got plenty of clothes that don't need doing but one thing I do iron is the flannels. That's for hygiene, I dry my face on a new, clean flannel every time I wash it as I'm prone to spots. Doing this helps me keep them at bay. I know one woman who irons her gussets - she's tried everything to keep thrush in check and found using the iron to kill any organisms was the remedy!

DoctorSnortles · 17/10/2021 18:34

I iron just about everything. I do sheets and pillowcases and all that. I was exasperated by a work colleague in the summer who was moaning about how hot she was in her outfit. I suggested cotton or linen and she snapped, ‘I’m not fucking ironing.’

In which case, stop moaning about sweating in your horrible polyester!

Shewholovedthethebanhills · 17/10/2021 18:36

I only wear natural fibres and I think they are perhaps more in need of ironing. The bits of the DCs uniforms that are not natural fibres don’t need ironing, I’ve noticed. My SIL boasts about never ironing but always looks like she slept in her clothes so I don’t take her as my model… Also a pile of ironing and catch-up television, possibly with wine, is a mid-week treat here! We fight over who gets to do the tea towels (because you don’t need to look at them while you do it).

SirVixofVixHall · 17/10/2021 18:37

I just spent £350 on a new iron… i iron A LOT.

Shewholovedthethebanhills · 17/10/2021 18:37

But I am also now off to buy a hand-held steamer.

ArabellaScott · 17/10/2021 18:38

No, never.

Newbie8365 · 17/10/2021 18:40

I iron everything! Including the bedding. In my defence, when I was at college I got a right bollocking from the teacher for turning up in a creased top (beauty therapy so its all about appearances) and was made to leave the class and come back when I was presentable. Ever since then it has been drilled into me to iron!

Peanutsandchilli · 17/10/2021 18:49

I do, mostly. I don't iron things like joggers or leggings, bedding or pjs though. I was brought up in a house where pants and socks got ironed. I hate seeing kids in unironed school uniform though. Such lazy parenting and they look so scruffy.

FreedomFaith · 17/10/2021 18:54

I iron clothes for interviews, funerals or weddings. That's it.

I wfh, in IT. Most people were casual clothes and very rarely on camera with anyone who cares, and if they do they don't say anything anyway, plus you can't see most of me.

I don't care if I look a bit scruffy in shops, I usually go food shopping after dealing with my horse so what good is ironing going to do? Grin

Animood · 17/10/2021 18:54

I iron because I do think it makes outfits look more polished and put together than if it's not ironed.

Obv only stuff that needs it- not going to iron pjs or gym kit are you?

MarshaBradyo · 17/10/2021 18:57

Yes esp school uniform - shirts and trousers it bugs me if not

But I don’t wear many shirts, mostly wool / cashmere jumpers which don’t need it

Izzy24 · 17/10/2021 19:03

I iron everything except underwear, towels and anything belonging toDH.

Love getting into a freshly made bed with crisply ironed linen.

Usually iron on a Sunday morning listening to the radio.

antsinyourpanta · 17/10/2021 19:08

I just spent £350 on a new iron… i iron A LOT.

Confused I do iron but blimey I could probably think of 350 other things I'd rather spend that much money on!!🤣
leiaskye · 17/10/2021 19:08

Not personally, no.
I pay my 14 year old daughter to do it 👍🏻😀

DeepaBeesKit · 17/10/2021 19:15

I always find it interesting when people say "I love ironing, it gives me the chance to watch tv/listen to radio" etc.

You know you are allowed to just sit down and do those things and do nothing else at all while you do so?

I swear it's a very female curse, men don't have this requirement be doing something useful at all times, they sit watching telly with no guilt whatsoever that they aren't using that time to do housework.

JackieChiles · 17/10/2021 19:15

@Biscoffee

Everything here is ironed and anyone who thinks no one else can tell they’re clothes haven’t been ironed is kidding themselves on.
Everyone on MN claims they can tell if someone hasn’t ironed, hasn’t showered, is trans, etc. Do you not realize that makes no sense? If you can’t tell you can’t tell . You don’t know you can’t tell, that’s the whole point. Of course with some people it will be obvious but there are plenty of others you never notice because —guess what? You can’t tell.

The more interesting question is why you assume someone with rumpled clothes is trying to pass themselves off as an ironer. There are only so many hours in a day and it takes a lot of them to keep up appearances like that. Am I supposed to be ashamed to spend my time on things I find more important, meaningful, relaxing and fun than smoothing fabric to comport with other people’s arbitrary ideas about how I should look? It makes me sad that so many women are still programmed to waste brain space judging other women on their housekeeping skills.

I’d rather save my sadness for other things.

CoalCraft · 17/10/2021 19:27

Certainly in this house, no one irons!

Cofifeefee · 17/10/2021 19:27

I love ironing!

It is the most enjoyable of all household chores:

I can watch tv/listen to a podcast while doing it
I get peace because it's one task that my toddler isn't able to "help" with
Sense of satisfaction because everything goes into wardrobes clean and tidy and won't be messed up again in 5 minutes unlike when I clean the kitchen
I do it on a Sunday evening and know that everybody has clothes for the week so no mad dash in the morning trying to sort out outfits.

Lucyccfc68 · 17/10/2021 19:32

I shake and hang clothes up as soon as they come out of the washing machine, but they still need ironing. They are still creased and look untidy. But, then I’m lazy and don’t really do much ironing - I pay someone else to do it. It gets picked up on a Monday and delivered back on a Wednesday - all done and I just hang it in the wardrobe.

Disfordarkchocolate · 17/10/2021 19:34

I buy clothes based on their ability to 'wash and wear' if I dry on a hanger.

I occasionally iron the few things I own that don't fit this.

bubblebath62636 · 17/10/2021 19:36

Yes, DH shirts and DDs school clothes. Even 'non iron' shirts end up creased 😂.

Pottedpalm · 17/10/2021 19:40

@DeepaBeesKit

I’d love to know how people don’t need to iron

Leggings, casual jeans and teeshirts. If you use a little fabric softener and give teeshirts a thorough shake before drying them flat, they dont need ironing.

Also drapey viscose type tops don't need ironing.

Where do you find room for drying tshirts flat?
silentpool · 17/10/2021 19:40

I iron work clothes and anything else that needs it. I also iron bedding, tea towels etc as they feel nicer and are easier to store.
