Does anyone iron anymore?

Not really an AIBU but posting for traffic. I hate ironing but so it anyway.

Does anyone iron clothes anymore or is it just me?
More and more often I'm hearing and reading about people aghast at the thought of ironing and that they never do any.

If you don't iron, how to you keep your clothes crease free, e g. cotton shirts and blouses?

Yes we iron....actually my husband does it !

Lynne1Cat · 17/10/2021 17:27

I've always ironed, but only clothes. I know some people iron bedding, but sod that, there's too much ironing to do as it is.

SirenSays · 17/10/2021 17:28

I haven't owned an iron in years. My mother irons everything - bed sheets, tea towels, pj's.. Total waste of time imo

MumOfTwoChildren · 17/10/2021 17:33

I don't iron, I have an iron and a board but couldn't tell you where they are if my life depended on it.
I have a steam mop with a clothing attachment so use that if something needs a quick once over.

jeannie46 · 17/10/2021 17:35

Don't buy clothes that need ironing ie linen on principle. Life's too short. Wash most things 30 degrees, hang outside, put on radiators, hang over bannisters. Few creases - fallout when hung or disappear when wearing. Can't remember the last time I ironed. Might consider it once or twice a year if Queen came to stay.

isthismylifenow · 17/10/2021 17:38

Everything gets ironed here. I do admit to not doing it myself, but to me everything just looks nicer ironed.

Especially bedding. Getting into a a bed with clean ironed cotton bedding is bliss.

Maybe I am just a snob but I think you can spot something that isn't ironed a mile off. I like clothes and to me if I have spent a decent amount on an item, I am going to keep it looking the best as I can.

TuftyMarmoset · 17/10/2021 17:39

I don’t iron anything. I hang my clothes to dry instead of using a tumble dryer and that way they don’t crease. Just reshape/smooth out any major creases when hanging them out.

GrumpyPanda · 17/10/2021 17:42

Shirts washed separately on a very low spin and hung to drip-dry. No ironing except for very formal occasions. Family members who regularly need ultra-smooth shirts just have them dry cleaned.

lilcolibri · 17/10/2021 17:46

Never iron anything.
Excitedly bought my first iron 2 years ago after seeing my MIL's big steamer iron that I thought was very cool. Haven't used the iron once...

I'm in my late 20s for reference.

Honestmary · 17/10/2021 17:52

My husband and I take it in turns to iron. In my line of work appearance is critical so if I turned up to work in anything creased I would be asked to address it immediately (shoes also need to be polished daily). Last week I missed one of the sleeves on my husbands work shirt and when he put it on, it looked shocking, so I’d love to know how people don’t need to iron

VerbenaGirl · 17/10/2021 17:53

I never iron. Work / school / going out stuff gets hung up as soon as they have been washed. We’re all fine with being a bit crumpled when casual. It does fall into my ‘life’s too short’ category. My DM always ironed everything.

BurntO · 17/10/2021 17:54

No ironing here. I avoid buying items that require ironing. I work in an office but it’s pretty casual. Yes sometimes my clothes are creased. I don’t care Smile it be helped massively by how you dry your clothes

Allywill · 17/10/2021 17:54

I iron work shirts. They say no-iron but they look better for a quick run over. I was ironing very little else but since cutting back on using the tumble dryer in an attempt to reduce utility bills, I have found I am ironing more. (Before anyone says DH should iron his own shirts, he does other stuff). I sometimes iron our bedsheets if I am in the right mood. They are a high thread count and feel much better if ironed (plus I read it was good in terms of reducing bed mites) but I can’t always be arsed.

DeepaBeesKit · 17/10/2021 17:55

I don't wear cotton shirts or blouses.

In fact I avoid buying things in fabrics that need ironing.

I have a few things that do, but they are smart items that I only wear rarely.

Nannyamc · 17/10/2021 17:56

I iron everything. 2 hrs on sunday morning. I bought my son and Dil an iron and ironing board when they moved to their new home. They laughed . Waste of money they said now the gd is in school uniform needs to be ironed.

DeepaBeesKit · 17/10/2021 17:58

I’d love to know how people don’t need to iron

Leggings, casual jeans and teeshirts. If you use a little fabric softener and give teeshirts a thorough shake before drying them flat, they dont need ironing.

Also drapey viscose type tops don't need ironing.

ArranMumma · 17/10/2021 17:58

I don’t think I’ve ever ironed an item of my clothing (I’m 27). My mum used to spend hours ironing the whole households clothing every weekend and go crazy if we crumpled anything when pulling out what we wanted to wear from the piles she made. We constantly told her we didn’t even want our clothes ironed. Eventually after years and years she stopped ironing our stuff thinking she would teach us a lesson. No one even noticed! I just give my clothes and shake and hang them up and they look fine! But I don’t really wear crinkly material I guess.

DeepaBeesKit · 17/10/2021 17:59

now the gd is in school uniform needs to be ironed.

Most school uniform now is available in non iron fabrics. My son is in smart trousers, shirt tie etc and none needs ironing.

RandomMess · 17/10/2021 18:02

@OnlyMe don't overfill the machine, lower the spin. Shake and fold and leave in the basket wet for 10-15 mins before hanging out to dry.

DeepaBeesKit · 17/10/2021 18:02

jeans, jumpers, T shirts - all the things you can't tumble dry

You can tumble dry all these things if you do it on a cool setting for a longer time. Heat pump driers are both better for the environment but also better for this. I tumble dry all my teeshirts.

Finknottlesnewt · 17/10/2021 18:02

I. An HONESTLY say I do not know where my iron is - and I work on a police team . ! If there were a funeral (I hope not) then I would seek it out ! Xx

B229 · 17/10/2021 18:05

I haven't ironed clothes in over 10 years, I bought an iron recently but it's a tiny one for craft stuff like perler beads, no intention of using it on clothes!

PaperMonster · 17/10/2021 18:07

Love ironing. Find it so relaxing. We mostly wear fabrics that need ironing so it’s a good job I like it really!

EBearhug · 17/10/2021 18:11

I quite like ironing. I find it quite soothing getting everything smooth and wrinkle-free, and if something is good on TV, it doesn't feel like a chore. I like freshly ironed bed linen, and I am the only person here, so either I do it or it isn't done. Plus a lot of my wardrobe is natural fibres, and silk and linen in particular look bad if unironed.

Oneforthemoneytwo · 17/10/2021 18:20

Jeans are better tumble dried. Keeps their shape!
