Does anyone iron anymore?

Not really an AIBU but posting for traffic. I hate ironing but so it anyway.

Does anyone iron clothes anymore or is it just me?
More and more often I'm hearing and reading about people aghast at the thought of ironing and that they never do any.

If you don't iron, how to you keep your clothes crease free, e g. cotton shirts and blouses?

Lots of modern fabrics don't really benefit enough to need ironing
I avoid ones that do
I don't tumble dry but if carefully folded or hung afterwards then tumbled clothes don't need it.
We're lots of us on zoom anyway.
I do iron the odd thing before I put it on
I mean if you wear linen trousers with a cotton shirt, its going to look crap if its unironed, but if you are wearing a cord skirt, a t shirt and a cardigan (as I am now), or a Jersey dress with a jacket, or jeans and hoodie, or a viscose top, there's not a significant difference.

TeenMinusTests · 17/10/2021 16:14

I iron shirts and trousers, I think they look very disheveled without.
And pillowcases & duvet covers occasionally.
We don't have a tumble drier so I don't know if that makes a difference.

I iron Sunday mornings 10-11 ish whilst listening to R4. (tum-te-tum)

SunndyD · 17/10/2021 16:14

I don’t apart from school uniform and DH work shirts….. nothing else is ironed

2Two · 17/10/2021 16:14

I haven't ironed in years. If anything is too creased I give it a quick burst with a steamer.

teenagetantrums · 17/10/2021 16:14

No l don't iron my day to day clothes. hang the clothes up when washed. They are fine...to be fair my work uniform is some horrible man made fiber and never crease and l mainly wear leggings, jeans and jumpers outside work.
Last time l ironed was when l went to a funeral and my cotton shirt was creased so l do have an iron.

WorraLiberty · 17/10/2021 16:15

I must admit I hate seeing primary kids in really crumpled uniforms, because they don't really have a choice in the matter.

Having said that, most of the primaries around here wear polo tops and sweatshirts that don't seem to need ironing.

GrandDuchessRomanov · 17/10/2021 16:16

Nope. I purposely don't buy stuff that needs ironing and DH has ironed his own work shirts since the day we got married almost 30 yrs ago.

TheNewSchmoo · 17/10/2021 16:16

I iron as I don't like to look like a tramp.
Uptight? Maybe...

RandomUsernameHere · 17/10/2021 16:16

I only iron DH's and my work shirts (I only wear 1-2 per week, DH wears 4-5). Everything else looks fine without, including school uniform.

sweatervest · 17/10/2021 16:16

i totally love ironing and i watch telly when i'm doing it (such a multi tasker) and ironing sheets is the nicest thing to do (says me) and i totally love my iron (it's just a normal one)

YearsSinceISawYou · 17/10/2021 16:17

I like things to be ironed because I think they look better but I just don't know how to do it properly.

I can do tea towels!

Oblomov21 · 17/10/2021 16:18

Every weekend. School shirts and shirts for Dh.

WorraLiberty · 17/10/2021 16:18

Its quite the opposite for me, I barely know anyone who irons. I havent had an iron or ironing board in about 10 years, and even then it just gathered dust.

Yes but you have a handheld steamer.

I barely know anyone who stands at the ironing board and does a pile of it, but unlike most Mumsnetters who claim to have thrown their irons away/not replaced broken ones, most people I know do at least own one incase the need to use it arises.

I can't imagine limiting myself to buying only clothes that don't need ironing, rather than having an iron sitting in the back of the cupboard.

Anonymous48 · 17/10/2021 16:19

Nope! Never. Most of our clothes get dried in the tumble dryer so they don't need it.

HalfpastFlea · 17/10/2021 16:19

I don't think either me or dh has touched the iron this year. Ds May have used it a couple of times, I really couldn't care less if people think I looked crumpled.

MajorCarolDanvers · 17/10/2021 16:20

I iron everything. It looks nice and it makes clothes feel nice against your skin.

I hate seeing people in creased clothes. It looks like you can't be bothered. Which is probably the case.

CallMeMabel · 17/10/2021 16:20

MN can be weirdly competitive about not ironing. I don't understand it, if clothes are creased they need a press before wearing otherwise it looks like shit.

ohihateithere · 17/10/2021 16:22

I only iron if it needs it, school uniform and some of the kids cheaper clothes from primark usually need ironing.

JapanJetplane · 17/10/2021 16:23

I don’t even know where our iron is kept, my husband does all of ours.

chelle862 · 17/10/2021 16:23

Everything here is ironed. All baby clothes, bibs and muslins are ironed too. I think crumpled up clothes look really scruffy Blush

Paddingtonthebear · 17/10/2021 16:24

Haven’t ironed anything since pre covid!

BettysGotMoxie · 17/10/2021 16:24

I did throw my iron away years ago but replaced with it a standing steamer thingy. It’s so much quicker and easier somehow less boring. I give mine and the youngest kids clothes a quick going over in the mornings as part of our routine now. The only other things I do with it is the older kids school uniforms but I don’t do everything else.

Butteredtoast55 · 17/10/2021 16:24

Yes and I love a well-ironed stack of laundry, whether I do it or my DH and DC. As others have said, non-ironed clothes look scruffy.

Rainbowheart1 · 17/10/2021 16:25

We have a iron but never use it. I don’t actually know when it was used last, must have been years now.

We have a tumble dryer

I love ironing. I do it on Sunday afternoons, I watch a film (swallows and amazons today) and have a glass of wine. It makes me happy. I do need a hobby, it is true. But I like having things ironed and sorted for the week ahead.
