Does anyone iron anymore?

Not really an AIBU but posting for traffic. I hate ironing but so it anyway.

Does anyone iron clothes anymore or is it just me?
More and more often I'm hearing and reading about people aghast at the thought of ironing and that they never do any.

If you don't iron, how to you keep your clothes crease free, e g. cotton shirts and blouses?

or they attend an interview and see others around them that look much smarter

Honestly, who isn't capable of distinguishing between a job interview and a random day in primary two?

Ironing the tracksuit bottoms and dinosaur hoodies has absolutely no impact on ones ability to put on an ironed shirt 20 years later.

Peach01 · 18/10/2021 00:31

I usually wear clothes that don't need ironed. If they do I use a steamer. Quicker and easier than the iron/board combo.

As for ironing killing germs... ok.

Why are you raising an eyebrow at that If? If it's linen or cotton with a hot iron, then of course it will kill more germs. It's why boiling is one method of sterilisation, but these days, most things are washed at 30 or 40 degrees rather than a boil wash.

I was advised to iron knickers after a bout of thrush, in case any spores were still around, to avoid reinfection, and a friend was told the same for socks after recurrent athlete's foot.

That doesn't mean everyone has to do it, but whether or not you do, that doesn't change the fact that the application of heat will kill some germs.

Well it may or may not do, but what difference does it make? I've never ironed a tea towel in my life and we are never ill. Are other non ironers plagued with sickness? I doubt it.

Siriisatwat · 18/10/2021 05:29

I honestly don’t wear anything that needs ironing.

And when I worked, I wore scrubs.

lnsufficientFuns · 18/10/2021 05:43

I irons everything! Only stopped doing pants a few years ago!

MagpieMary · 18/10/2021 05:47

My flatmate st Uni used to iron her knickers!!

EnidFrighten · 18/10/2021 06:03

I don't iron anything. I don't buy clothes that need ironing like shirts etc. We air dry clothes which makes them much less crumpled than tumble drying. Life is too short. DH and I work from home and never have to dress up.

As to whether our kids are doomed professionally because they haven't learned about looking smart by the age of three @proudwomansexmatters (why does your ex matter?) That's bonkers. If they're going to progress they'll learn all kinds of new skills, spending 30mins a day scorching cloth in order to impress a boss is just one of them!

yikesanotherbooboo · 18/10/2021 08:18

I iron, shirts, work uniforms, t shirts, dresses, trousers, jeans if needed, bedding and, yes, tea towels.
I don't judge people that don't . I don't have a tumble dryer but do hang things out .I like the feeling of ironed clothes and I find that they are easier to put away.I can't stand non cotton clothing or poly cotton sheets so that may be part of my issue.Luckily for me the number of school shirts has dropped now as I used to find that even the so called non-iron ones looked better for a quick go over..Do I need a hand held steamer? Do they work for sheets and things or just for hanging clothes?

StoneofDestiny · 18/10/2021 08:40

Couldnt imagine wearing in-ironed clothes. Bedding is definitely ironed - but not fitted sheets. Don't like ironing but do it watching TV so never that bad.

StoneofDestiny · 18/10/2021 08:45

I really can't imagine going out for an evening in an un-ironed dress, un-ironed blouses/shirts for work or sending the kids to school in in-ironed uniforms.
But each to their own.

CookPassBabtridge · 18/10/2021 08:51

Don't iron apart from for funerals and weddings, just don't need to otherwise. I remember it being this massive chore for my parents!

GoWalkabout · 18/10/2021 08:52

I think it's one of those tasks that is a lot of effort for minimal difference, so detail focused people who have high standards view it as a worthwhile pay off, while other people gradually give it up.

Rosebel · 18/10/2021 08:56

Up until I had my 3rd baby last year I ironed everything. I don't have the time now.
I iron my DDs school shirts and occasionally I'll iron a shirt for my DH (wedding, funeral, etc) but both me and my husband wear t shirts for work which don't need ironing and everything else is more or less okay.

2lsinllama · 18/10/2021 08:58

I only iron shirts, and bedding if we are having visitors!

SweetPetrichor · 18/10/2021 08:59

I don't iron cause I'm a jeans and tshirts person at home and my work clothes have been selected to not require ironing.
My DP irons his work clothes and will iron my stuff along with it if I have a blouse that needs done, which doesn't crop up too often but it does occasionally.

TuftyMarmoset · 18/10/2021 09:02

I honestly don’t think it does matter @proudwomansexmatters - I have a professional role and don’t iron my work clothes and I get on perfectly fine. I even turned up at my Oxbridge interview in an unironed top and jeans and got in, while other candidates in suits didn’t.
My school had a huge focus on having your uniform correct and it was only because it was a crap school and the only thing they felt they could control. Since then, nothing has happened if I haven’t had my shirt tucked in. In my experience the real world cares more about substance, fortunately.

FeedMeSantiago · 18/10/2021 09:41

I don't iron, we have an iron and board which DH uses to iron shirts for special occasions and that's it.

I don't wear blouses or shirts as they don't suit me. I wear jeans and t shirts or dresses in fabrics which don't need ironing so no need.

I never learned how to iron, I attempted it once aged 8 and ruined an item of clothing so my parents banned me from ever ironing. DH tried to show me but quickly adopted my parents policy. I'm very dyspraxic so this is probably wise!
