Does anyone iron anymore?

Not really an AIBU but posting for traffic. I hate ironing but so it anyway.

Does anyone iron clothes anymore or is it just me?
More and more often I'm hearing and reading about people aghast at the thought of ironing and that they never do any.

If you don't iron, how to you keep your clothes crease free, e g. cotton shirts and blouses?

Nope

TheKeatingFive · 17/10/2021 22:33

There's a child in DD class who is always rumpled up of a morning. Looks bloody awful.

Honestly, who cares? It's not a fashion show.

BashfulClam · 17/10/2021 22:34

I have never looked at anyone and rated whether their clothes are creased or not. I have better things to do than iron.

BashfulClam · 17/10/2021 22:36

If something looks like it really needs ironed I boast it with the hairdryer…the creases fall out.

youkiddingme · 17/10/2021 22:41

Only time I get the iron out is to press something for sewing. Everything else gets a wee spin in the tumble dryer then hung straight up.

LucyGrey · 17/10/2021 22:42

Nope. We have a steamy function thing on the washing machine that gets the creases out.

Sinthie · 17/10/2021 22:45

Never. Not even school uniforms. I would never buy clothes for any of us that require ironing. My 7 year old saw an iron in the cupboard and asked what it was 😆

Sinthie · 17/10/2021 22:47

Anyone who thinks everything needs ironing has too much time on their hands…

Davros · 17/10/2021 22:47

Yes

moofolk · 17/10/2021 22:47

Nope. Fold or hang clothes when dry.

bellsbuss · 17/10/2021 22:49

Yes as I think clothes that haven't been ironed make you look scruffy. Bedding doesn't look as nice when not ironed.

DeepaBeesKit · 17/10/2021 22:51

Well yes, you could, but after you’ve finished listening to the radio or watching the television, the ironing would still need to be done

Well no.... not if you dont bother.

Or you can just leave it for the man of the house to do. Men manage to unburden themselves of these responsibilities.

DeepaBeesKit · 17/10/2021 22:53

Everything in this house is ironed. Those who don't think it needs to be are deluded. There's a child in DD class who is always rumpled up of a morning. Looks bloody awful.

That'll be my DS then. Rumpled he might be, although his uniform is non iron.... but he's well behaved, excellent at reading and exceptionally good at maths. I think he'll do just fine in life.

fedup65356 · 17/10/2021 22:57

I wasn't expecting so many replies to my question!

I hate ironing but do iron work clothes e.g. shirts and dresses. Also creased t-shirts. I don't iron things like jeans, underwear and tea cloths.

I would love to never have to iron.

We own an iron and board, it gets used about twice a year.

I still don’t see why it needs it… does this child’s clothes being crumpled stop them from learning? Don’t children’s clothes get crumpled almost immediately after being put on from playing and running about anyway?
MountainDweller · 17/10/2021 23:07

DH always did it because he had to do work shirts. Now he has a new job with a casual dress code and wears jeans and a t-shirt (mostly un ironed, but tumble dried so just about respectable) Sad

We do duvet cases and pillow cases because they feel nicer ironed and I do a few shirts, skirts and trousers. Mostly I live in jersey now!

MountainDweller · 17/10/2021 23:08

Like the sound of a hand steamer though!

Snugglybuggly · 17/10/2021 23:14

Nope

bananaboats · 17/10/2021 23:15

I have an iron but rarely use it. No real need don't wear shirts etc. And have never noticed anyone else looking creased or not creased!

RampantIvy · 17/10/2021 23:15

Yes, but I don't have loads of clothes that need ironing, and I quite enjoy it. I find it satisfying, and love the smell of ironing clothes that have been line dried.

ComeTheFuck0nBridget · 17/10/2021 23:16

I iron if it needs it, so shirts or blouses, if we're going somewhere "nice". It's hardly ever to be honest. Normal day to day stuff doesn't get ironed. I've no kids though.

username49483 · 17/10/2021 23:30

Mainly just school uniform or shirts. I then only iron if it looks creased when I come to wear it.
My mum still irons everything as soon as it comes out the tumble drier including underwear and towels Grin.

proudwomansexmatters · 17/10/2021 23:30

@TuftyMarmoset it's not about them not having the ability to learn if they're wearing non ironed clothes 🙄

By all means, tell yourself that the way a person presents them doesn't matter. You're the one teaching your child that lesson. You might not think people notice but they do. You're teaching your child that how they present themselves doesn't matter. That won't necessarily be the case as they get older and if they want a professional role. These are lessons that are learnt very early on In a Childs home life. They see it Both from how they present themselves and how they see their family present themselves.

So sure, tell your child that how they're turned out doesn't matter. But when they miss out on opportunities later in life or are massively let down because many in society do find smart and un rumpled appearance important, or they attend an interview and see others around them that look much smarter and more presentable and they haven't ever learnt that lesson - because at home it wasn't deemed important.

Sure, there will be people who disagree. Say that they've done just fine in life through never having an ironed piece of clothing in their lives and they may well be right! Or that they never even notice other peoples clothes. Many people do though and personally I think having a smart appearance is a good lesson for kids to learn

nokidshere · 18/10/2021 00:00

I used to iron shirt collar/yolk only because dh and the boys always wore a jumper over the shirt. I have never ironed bedlinen, towels, underwear etc.

We haven't ironed now for about 5yrs. Occasionally one of the boys will use it if they want to be extra smart for something but mostly we buy clothes that don't crease and wash/tumble them and hang immediately.
