Does anyone iron anymore?

Not really an AIBU but posting for traffic. I hate ironing but so it anyway.

Does anyone iron clothes anymore or is it just me?
More and more often I'm hearing and reading about people aghast at the thought of ironing and that they never do any.

If you don't iron, how to you keep your clothes crease free, e g. cotton shirts and blouses?

I never iron but DH and I both work from home and everything goes immediately from a hot tumble dryer onto hangers in the wardrobe.

My girls always look tidy.

Lockheart · 17/10/2021 17:06

I'd love to iron more, but living in a shared flat isn't ideal. No room for an ironing board for one, and very limited space to hang clothes properly, so it would be a bit of an exercise in futility. I tend to wear things that don't need ironing and save my smart clothes for special occasions, when I can iron them on a towel on the floor.

ghostyslovesheets · 17/10/2021 17:06

I iron every Sunday - I can't stand bedding that's not ironed - plus jeans, jumpers, T shirts - all the things you can't tumble dry

I don't know how you get away with not ironing and things not being creased - is it magic?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/10/2021 17:07

Some of my things, yes - linen tunic tops that really do need it, and anything else linen or a linen/cotton mix.

I never iron bedding, except perhaps pillowcases if guests are coming to stay.

Cuddlyrottweiler · 17/10/2021 17:07

We only iron creasy clothes on special occasions. Most clothes we own don't really crease and most of the time it really doesn't matter.

Sciurus83 · 17/10/2021 17:07

Rarely. Only silk and cotton shirts or special occasion clothes. Most things tumble dry or hang to dry. Lenor crease release is pretty effective for anything that's still looking a bit scruffy but definitely don't bother with the amount my mum would do. Even if I had the time I definitely do not have the inclination

Don't tumble dry for one, that's a bugger for creases. Hang things up to dry. Dry things flat on the clothes horse.
FourTeaFallOut · 17/10/2021 17:09

Yes, I iron the kid's uniforms and other bits. As much to iron the creases in as to smooth the rest of the garment out. But I like ironing - I find it quite relaxing.

Tobchette · 17/10/2021 17:12

I realized that by ironing I am forced to plan my outfits. So I look in the basket, select the things that will work together, and then iron them and prepare the entire outfit on the hanger. So I only have up to 10 outfits in my wardrobe at a time and the rest is hidden away in a basket in a cupboard. Makes mornings less stressful and if anything stays in the basket too long I know it doesn't work for me anymore and it goes to charity shop. Like others said, i do it while watching tv.

ballsdeep · 17/10/2021 17:13

@luckylavender

I iron. Can't imagine how not to.
Me too!! I've just done a huge pile. I get things straight from the line or dryer and they need ironing. I don't get how people don't iron?!
HintofVintagePink · 17/10/2021 17:16

I do about an hour of ironing twice a week. DH and 2 x DCs have 15 shirts a week between them. I also iron bedding and other clothes but don’t usually do PJs or tea towels unless they are really wrinkly.

I enjoy it. I put something on the iPad and have a quiet time getting it done. I use a lovely scented ironing water and enjoy seeing neat shirts on hangers and tidy piles of clothes at the end. I don’t feel oppressed - I appreciate the luxury of having time and space to do something that other people perhaps dont.

3scape · 17/10/2021 17:16

I iron quite a bit. But then I sew and I can't bear fabric looking all crap and smooshed.

Pottedpalm · 17/10/2021 17:17

Most people are saying ‘I never iron except.. uniforms, shirts, blouses..’ so they do iron. If you have two children in school shirts and then a few for self and DH ( I know on Mumsnet no one irons their DH’s shirts, but I’m talking real world), that’s a fair bit of ironing.
I iron pillowcases and quilt covers, because we like cotton bedding and it looks shit otherwise.

Mummyexpat · 17/10/2021 17:18

I iron school uniforms, my work uniform and pillow cases (don’t like creases on my face! 🤣) I make sure I take washing out of the machine as soon as possible when it finishes, vigorously shake it and hang it. I invested in a really good steam iron (one of those that sits on a big reservoir) when it was on sale and it makes such a difference! Much quicker and easier.

liveforsummer · 17/10/2021 17:18

Not unless I have a job interview or something else similarly formal

LowlandLucky · 17/10/2021 17:18

Why would you go out looking a state in creased clothes ? I Suppose 20 odd years with the Military raises the standards where ironing is concerned.

Suzi888 · 17/10/2021 17:19

I do it, but I hate it. I dream of paying someone to iron my stuff, but I don’t like the thought of my clean clothes being fingered. Sad

Magilix · 17/10/2021 17:20

I iron school shirts and work shirts and clothes for special occasions but nothing else.

Looubylou · 17/10/2021 17:20

Wrong person to ask, I Ron literally everything, even socks, teatowels knickers. My clothes would look rubbish if I didn't iron outerwear.

RandomMess · 17/10/2021 17:21

I wash to minimise and shop carefully to minimise.

DH works from home, I iron my work dresses which are mainly silk or linen but that's pretty much it.

The DC show a vague interest in learning and I keep considering a garment steamer as I loathe ironing so much.

0nlyMe · 17/10/2021 17:21

Question- if you use a tumble dryer and neatly fold /hang onto hangers straight after taking clothes out, do they not have wrinkles? Obviously I dont have one!
I iron everything apart from bedding, pants/socks and tea towels. Oh and I don’t iron dd baby clothes (she’s 6 months). I usually take clothes off the aired and iron soon as I can, but they’re still creased! Do I have a crappy washing machine that creases clothes more than normal?

Osrie · 17/10/2021 17:22

Yes. If ever I’m unable to iron, I cope by wearing jacket or whatever to hide the fact, but otherwise definitely.

solvendie · 17/10/2021 17:22

My husband irons everything for us all - he’s great at it!

Gilly12345 · 17/10/2021 17:22

I iron shirts, blouses, tea towels, jeans, duvet covers/pillowcases.

Do not iron underwear, towels, fitted bed sheets, obviously coats.

Tallisimo · 17/10/2021 17:24

I still iron very occasionally. But only when I have to!
