Does anyone iron anymore?

Not really an AIBU but posting for traffic. I hate ironing but so it anyway.

Does anyone iron clothes anymore or is it just me?
More and more often I'm hearing and reading about people aghast at the thought of ironing and that they never do any.

If you don't iron, how to you keep your clothes crease free, e g. cotton shirts and blouses?

I only iron blouses or cotton clothes. And those only get occasional use because of the ironing requirement.

manywildhorses · 17/10/2021 16:43

I iron and really can’t understand those who don’t iron anything at all, I don’t like looking really creased. I’ve tried but need to iron uniforms, T-shirts, skirts, trousers, etc. I actually enjoy ironing though as I feel like I’m doing something productive but get to just stand there and watch tv Grin

StrongLegs · 17/10/2021 16:45

I iron Scout neckerchiefs.

PartyStory · 17/10/2021 16:45

Apart from using a hotel iron on a single item a couple of times, I haven’t ironed anything since high school. My mother used to make me and my sister get up at 8am to do chores all day using the summer holidays, every day. Ironing the family’s clothes was seen as the best job as you could watch tv at the same time. We quickly realised that of we stopped ironing own our clothes we would finish quicker.

These days I also prefer not to iron to avoid damaging clothes, such as making them shiny, scorches, etc. I just hang up things that wrinkle on a hanger on the bathroom curtain rail after taking them out the washing machine and most of the creases fall out themselves. Most of my fabrics don’t wrinkle or fit in a way that the wrinkles don’t show anyway, though they are natural fibres.

Hemingwayscats · 17/10/2021 16:46

My Mother and Grandmother definitely do. Grandma even irons her bedding and underwear, she absolutely loves ironing. Mum thinks I’m slovenly because I never bother. I just think it’s a waste of my life.

Topseyt · 17/10/2021 16:47

What is ironing?

My iron lives in a cupboard in the utility room (I think, anyway) and hasn't seen the light of day for years.

Tink626 · 17/10/2021 16:47

I just don't understand how people can never iron. I iron all my clothes otherwise they look creased and awful. It takes me 5-10 minutes each morning to iron what we need for the day.

Spoldge45 · 17/10/2021 16:48

I iron but not as much as I used to Mainly only T.shirts really. I find if I stick something on a hanger before putting it out to dry either outside or on the airer it needs little or no ironing.

SirensofTitan · 17/10/2021 16:48

Good to see perennial do you iron threads having a post covid renaissance, so predictable and so nothing new to say Grin

So, some people iron everything, some nothing, some with a tinklely laugh have an iron but have no idea where it is (how is that even possible Confused) etc. No position is superior to the others

Do what suits you people, you don't need to confer with the internet Grin

I iron the children’s uniforms and my husband irons his work shirts but I never really iron much else unless it looks awfully creased.

SylvanasWindrunner · 17/10/2021 16:50

I had an awful washing machine once that made everything so creased, so if I still had that machine I would have to iron everything! It was terrible.

wildthingsinthenight · 17/10/2021 16:50

I started this Summer to implement a system of tumble and shake or peg on the line on a coat hanger. It's working well!
I do iron my ds's school uniform though

DeeCeeCherry · 17/10/2021 16:52

I iron tshirts and blouses. Very occasionally trousers, depending on material.

I have a 12 minute anti-crease option on my tumble dryer, its a lifesaver I only have to iron clothes for a couple of minutes. Thank God

Aurignacian · 17/10/2021 16:52

Our ironing board is permanently set up in the utility room. DH irons his work stuff each evening, I iron as required (not often as I work at home).

LuckyAmy1986 · 17/10/2021 16:53

I don’t iron anything, sometimes steam things if they are really bad

scarpa · 17/10/2021 16:53

I don't iron anything, unless I was going to a fancy event or a funeral (and even then, most of my formal wear is either not allowed to be ironed or is the kind of fabric that doesn't really need it, so it'd only be if it was really creased). DH used to iron when he had a suit-job, but now he works in jeans and a tshirt.

I don't especially care if someone can tell my clothes are ironed. Certainly never notice it or care on someone else.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 17/10/2021 16:54

I iron everything g. I hate looking a mess.

vdbfamily · 17/10/2021 16:56

Husband works from home and if he ever has to travel for work, he does his own ironing.
I take stuff straight out of washing machine, stretch it out and hang out properly and never need ironing. Have not had an ironing board for years and if I have to iron I use the end of our bed.

Piapiano · 17/10/2021 16:59

I only iron school shirts. DH does his work shirts.

fabulousathome · 17/10/2021 17:00

I use the tumble dryer bit of my washer dryer for less than 10 mins per load (taking out the things that don't need to be flat anyway - like socks).

Things come out wet, but hot, and crease free. Immediately they are put on a hanger and dried like that. No ironing needed. I put in a max of 5 things at a time. It really works!

GoodnightGrandma · 17/10/2021 17:00

No.
Shake things as they come out of the dryer and hang or fold nicely.
I can’t see creases on me so don’t care.

antsinyourpanta · 17/10/2021 17:02

@sweatervest

i totally love ironing and i watch telly when i'm doing it (such a multi tasker) and ironing sheets is the nicest thing to do (says me) and i totally love my iron (it's just a normal one)
i beg to differ - ironing fitted sheets is horrendous...but I still do it! lol. Blush
TreXX · 17/10/2021 17:03

I don't iron very often.
Day to day I don't bother and I really don't care if people can tell or not.
I don't examine other people to see if they do or not either. I don't tend to attach value to how flat someone's clothes are.

I do hang carefully to minimise creasing. And tend to buy clothes that don't need ironing.

My husband doesn't bother these days either although he used to before discovering non-iron shirts.

I will say that it's much easier to put things away when they've been ironed so I can see why someone would do it. But it's not for me.

AfterSchoolWorry · 17/10/2021 17:03

I don't iron no, except for a special occasion.

I don't care if I have creases, who's gonna be looking at a fat, over 50 anyway!!!

Oneforthemoneytwo · 17/10/2021 17:03

There are some things which just need ironing including shirts and blouses, my kids chinos and I iron quite a lot of tshirts as I can’t bear the meal lines if they aren’t flat.
