Does anyone iron anymore?

Not really an AIBU but posting for traffic. I hate ironing but so it anyway.

Does anyone iron clothes anymore or is it just me?
More and more often I'm hearing and reading about people aghast at the thought of ironing and that they never do any.

If you don't iron, how to you keep your clothes crease free, e g. cotton shirts and blouses?

We've intentionally chosen clothing based on it not needing ironing (or dry cleaning) and so over the years we've ended up not needing to iron anything - except occasional old stuff from the back of the wardrobe. Haven't had the ironing board out in three years or more.

Isis1981uk · 17/10/2021 16:26

I iron nothing, the creases mostly fall out on the line (I don't have a tumble drier so maybe that helps!) plus life is too short. My partner irons his shirts and naval uniform but that's it in our house!

Justgettingbye · 17/10/2021 16:26

Nope not anymore cba with that along with everything else to do. I will iron the odd item if it's particularly bad

Echofallen · 17/10/2021 16:26

Never, haven't for years unless it was a dress I was wearing to a party which needed some attention. So 2019 maybe?

I once spent half an hour ironing a pile of clothes only to discover that the bloody thing wasn't switched on!

JamesWilbysAbs · 17/10/2021 16:28

Yes I iron. Several times a week. The only things I DONT iron are my gym clothes.
I don't understand how anyone can go round in leggings, jeans or jersey/ T shirts etc which have not been ironed.

Peanutbuttermandms · 17/10/2021 16:29

Nope! I iron nothing. It’s great!!!

Inthemuckheap · 17/10/2021 16:29

Nope. If can't be tumbled, hang to dry. Tumble gets emptied and nicely folded (using the ironing board!) or hung when still warm so not creased.

Would iron a shirt for a wedding or funeral if I had to.

No kids at home anymore so no school uniform to do and no longer work in a job that requires posh clothes. When I did, somebody picked up the ironing on a Monday and brought it back Tuesday all done!

StrongerOrWeaker · 17/10/2021 16:30

Am on a busy train right now. Looking around I wouldn't be able to tell you who ironed their clothes and who didn't.
I guess most clothes don't need ironing. I can only think of a few of mine that will look creased. The rest never does.

BigWoollyJumpers · 17/10/2021 16:30

I pretty much iron everything, but then most of my stuff is natural fibres, cotton and wool. I don't like "modern" non-iron fabrics so I suppose I have metaphorically, and literally, made my own bed to lie in!

I just couldn't not iron bed linen for example, impossible. Shirts, tops, jumpers, jeans, t-shirts, summer dresses, and yes, tea towels. Both teen DD's also iron, inc. DD2 at uni, so it obviously rubs off.

MissAmbrosia · 17/10/2021 16:31

I used to spend many a Sunday afternoon ironing in front of Netflix. Since the first lockdown the iron has been out of the cupboard about 3 times. Most stuff really doesn't seem to need it if folded and hung up correctly. Nobody looks crumpled. When dh starts needing work shirts again, he'll do his own.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/10/2021 16:32

I iron. I don't know how people's clothes don't get creased because mine always are after a wash! They need ironing, I think creased clothes look scruffy.

Babdoc · 17/10/2021 16:35

Haven’t ironed anything since DH died 30 years ago. I live in jeans and t shirts. When the kids were school age, their jumper or blazer hid their shirts and their trousers were crease free material.
I dry clothes and bedding on the radiators, so there isn’t much creasing anyway.

Kim82 · 17/10/2021 16:35

I iron on a Sunday. I only iron school uniforms, my work clothes and the odd item that looks super creased.

I hate ironing with a passion but won’t let the kids to go school in in-ironed clothes as you can definitely tell if uniforms aren’t done - they’re specific skirts with sharp pleats and look awful if you let the pleats drop out.

Other than that I don’t iron anything else. I just walk round creased at the weekends.

caringcarer · 17/10/2021 16:36

Absolutely not. I tumble and shake instead. DH irons his own shirts on days he goes into office.

HalfpastFlea · 17/10/2021 16:37

@Waxonwaxoff0

I iron. I don't know how people's clothes don't get creased because mine always are after a wash! They need ironing, I think creased clothes look scruffy.
Surprisingly though, some of us just don't care if others think we look scruffy. That's your issue with you judging others, not ours.
Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/10/2021 16:38

@HalfpastFlea I'm sure people don't care, I was just stating why I iron.

WorraLiberty · 17/10/2021 16:39

Surprisingly though, some of us just don't care if others think we look scruffy.

It's not surprising but I think if people are honest, most would prefer not to look scruffy if they could be arsed to do something about it.

That said, no all un-ironed clothes look scruffy because not all clothes need ironing.

DappledThings · 17/10/2021 16:39

I iron nearly everything. I don't care how it looks and I don't care how anyone else looks. I just much prefer to put away ironed clothes having folded as they are ironed. Folding and putting away a load straight from the dryer would feel like more of a chore to me.

WorraLiberty · 17/10/2021 16:40

*not

BeaucoupFish · 17/10/2021 16:40

They use lots of electricity as well

MintJulia · 17/10/2021 16:40

Yes, shirts & blouses, cotton chinos and school trousers. Doesn't take long Smile

WorraLiberty · 17/10/2021 16:41

I hardly ever fold clothes either. The majority of mine are hung up.

Yubaba · 17/10/2021 16:41

I only iron school uniforms, my work tunic because it looks shit otherwise and a couple of my tops that really need pressing into shape.
Every thing else just gets folded straight out of the dryer and put away.
DH used to iron his work shirts but he’s still WFH and lives in hoodies and jeans these days.

SylvanasWindrunner · 17/10/2021 16:42

We don't iron and I don't think any of us look creased. We don't buy clothes that need to be ironed, and our washing machine and tumble dryer don't crease things. None of us wear shirts or pleated things. I did iron when I wore suits to an office job a number of years ago and bloody hated it.

nimbuscloud · 17/10/2021 16:42

Iron here too
As do ds and dd.
