The UK is a wonderful place to live

The sun is shining, the birds are singing, why would anyone want to be anywhere else. In fact the 1000s of migrants arriving everyday are a clear indication of how wonderful the UK is under the stewardship of the wise and entertaining Boris Johnson. Just think how awful it would be if Jeremy Corbyn was PM wearing cardigans and still searching for the magic money tree.
Everything is great, the UK is wonderful.

Yes I'm pretty happy with it, more or less as happy as I've been for all of the 35 years since I arrived. The most annoying thing about it as the whiny vocal minority who think it's the job of politicians to make their life better, instead of relying on themselves.

This 100 percent.

They are coming here because they will almost certainly be tortured to death in their native country, not because this is some sort of holy land. They’re also in for a really terrible time here but it beats persecution. You’re ridiculous.

... and even then a lot want to go back. It says something about the UK when Afghan migrants who have been in the UK for a few weeks would rather go back to Afghanistan. www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2021/oct/09/afghan-refugees-uk-hotels-operation-warm-welcome

I can now report that the crows is no longer circling within my view.

@Pythonista

Should we ask MNHQ for a special 'complain about the UK' topic?
Yes please. It could maybe be merged with the Brexit one.

@Comedycook

There was a post on here years ago where a woman described a friend of hers who was a refugee from Yemen (I think) now living in the UK. She described how to her friend it was absolute paradise to walk down the street without a fear of bombs, to sit in a lovely park while your DC played, to walk into a shop full of delicious food that you can afford to buy. Really changed my outlook actually. I think the UK is easily one of the best countries in the world to live in.
You don’t think that it says something that you have to try to imagine yourself a recently-arrived refugee from war and famine in order to see your own country as a functional society?

Yeah, comparing how lucky we are by using a war torn country literally running out of water as a conparison is setting the bar terminally low. Surely even for the tories.
There are lots of countries in the world with terrible problems for a variety of reasons, but we are meant to be in a developed country.
The problem is the gap between the haves and the have nots is going to get wider and wider; Britain is a rich country and it doesn't sit well with me that there are people who literally have to choose between eating and staying warm in winter.

The ONLY think I disagree with is use of the word “minority”

Ifailed · 10/10/2021 10:58

Sarcasm works when the statement could be considered to correct, but in reality it's intended to relay the opposite.

In this case, there is nothing that could be considered to be factual, so it fails.

arethereanyleftatall · 10/10/2021 11:01

Lol, your post didn't go quite the way you wanted it to, did it op?

Sorry to piss on your parade, but I also, genuinely, love it here.

Life is what you make it.

Yes but if you look round the world there seem to be far more awful countries to live in than good so I thank my lucky stars

tenredthings · 10/10/2021 11:14

It all looks beautiful with my vote Tory get one free, plastic, ( made inChina ) rose tinted specs.

Tories are quick to harvest from the magic money tree when it suits them - look at the way they bribed the DUP (not to mention all their corruption) At least JC would have given some cash to ordinary folk instead of Sir Bufton Tufton
MintJulia · 10/10/2021 11:28

I don't buy into the 'Boris is brilliant' bit but yes, the UK is a fab place to live. I've just come back from a walk in the autumn sunshine. Birds singing, leaves turning. Heavenly.

Penfield · 10/10/2021 11:34

UK used to be a lovely place. The Tories and specifically Boris has run it into the ground.

That’s the aim. They will benefit from it. The rest of us will suffer.

Pythonista · 10/10/2021 11:35

And yet you would think that the utopia that Labour created would have ensured they stayed in power or at least were elected back into power Hmm

I don't vote Tory btw

PersephoneJames · 10/10/2021 11:47

I know this is a sarcastic thread but The UK is a wonder place to live if you have the money for it. The cultural offering (theatre, museums, stately homes) really is amazing, homes with gardens are the norm, there’s loads to do with children on the weekend. The food is varied, the people generally friendly, animals are loved, pubs are like homes from home, the countryside stunning and the TV is fantastic.

For those who struggle financially, no it isn’t great. I spent my children’s early years in Spain where the government pays for nursery and fathers get 16 weeks paternity leave, it was lovely. Moved back at school age and saw how much harder it is here for women building their careers.

Ori3 · 10/10/2021 12:04

I like living in the UK. I like the anonymity of the place; the fact that people can do what they want, be who they want to be etc without too much interference from the state. I lived in France for sometime; so I can compare it to there. You can’t fart without a license in France! It’s rules, rules, rules everywhere you turn.

The countryside in the UK is just so beautiful too. The people have a great sense of dark humour. Very self-deprecating which is fun.

Love the variety of the British isles too, both in terms of culture & landscape. You never could get tired of travelling around this small island!! The seasons are individuals in themselves, each one has it’s own charm here.

Sure there are problems, like anyplace you go but the UK is very desirable as a place to live and be free IMHO

GoingOutOutNEVER · 10/10/2021 12:11

UK is massive, lovely places and shit places..just like any other country

Camomila · 10/10/2021 12:19

Its not perfect but my 5 year old regularly likes to tell me "we are very lucky we live in the safest country"...he is talking about the lack of hurricanes, twisters, volcanoes, earthquakes, killer spiders, crocodiles and lions Grin Tbf it's true though, we are pretty lucky natural disaster and animal wise.
