Washing teatowels

Sorry for the boring thread.

AIBU to think it's fine to bung teatowels in with the normal washing at 40° if they're not actually soiled?
DH seems to think we should do a separate wash for teatowels and I think that's overkill when they've just been used in a normal fashion to dry stuff for a few days.

@BoredZelda

Everything else goes in together in a 15 minute quick wash.

Said this the other day. If your clothes are clean on a 15 minute wash, they don’t need washed, wear them again.

Agreed
Anycolourwilldo · 06/10/2021 20:42

It's absolutely fine to put tea towels in a normal wash. No one died from not doing so. Do not waste your time thinking this is a thing and you should do it. There is already too much pressure to do completely pointless things. Don't let this be another one.

Lawstudentmumtoone · 06/10/2021 20:43

I chuck mine in with the rest of the washing… but I wash everything at 60 with dettol laundry sanitiser anyway… so doubt anything would survive that!

delilahbucket · 06/10/2021 20:43

They go in with everything else at 40, sometimes in with towels or bedding at 60.

FinallyGotAnIPhone · 06/10/2021 20:44

It would never even occur to me to not just wash them with everything else.

SickAndTiredAgain · 06/10/2021 20:45

@BoredZelda

I wash them separately because they tend to have oil or fat on them and the rest of the washing smells of fat, especially if it goes through the drier. Ever noticed the fatty aroma of hotel towels, that’s because they are washed with the kitchen cloths.
I think some of the different answers come from different uses for tea towels. Mine wouldn’t have fat or oil on them, as they are only used for drying clean stuff. We use reusable wipes for wiping down the surfaces, mopping up spills etc and they get washed in a hotter wash with other household cleaning cloths because they are the things that will have grease etc on them.
luckylavender · 06/10/2021 20:45

I wash towels and tea towels together on a hot wash

Clovacloud · 06/10/2021 20:46

Mine only get used for drying washed hands in the kitchen, so I just throw them in with the rest of the washing. Haven’t killed anyone in 30 years Grin

LubaLuca · 06/10/2021 20:51

In with everything else, 40° with biological powder.

freshcarnation · 06/10/2021 20:52

I only wash at 40. Dark loads and light loads. Don't separate tea towels. Once every few weeks I run the machine at its hottest to blast the pipes through though as my last machine had an early death due to getting gunked up

Why would they have oil or fat on them? What are you using them for? Tea towels are used to dry wet dishes not mop up oil/fat

Sorry to derail slightly but... my DM thinks I am terribly unhygienic for not having a separate hand drying towel in the kitchen!

I point out that it's just being used to dry clean hands and is replaced very frequently. You'd think I was using it to wipe the dogs arse the way she reacts! 🤣

rrhuth · 06/10/2021 21:14

All kitchen linen washed separately on a hot wash, we dry used tea towels and wash when we have a full load, with any place mats etc.

Wineandroses3 · 06/10/2021 21:16

I wash tea towels and fish cloths separate, yea towels don’t get much us as we use a dishwasher, so I normally just put them on a quick wash and add a drop of dettol to the wash. Each to their own but I wouldn’t was tea towels in the same wash and knickers and underpants.

Wazzzzzzzup · 06/10/2021 21:17

I agree. Mine get diry because i keep running out of blue roll😂 I just wipe stuff with whatever is close buy. Which is often tea towel

Wineandroses3 · 06/10/2021 21:17

Fish cloths?! I meant dish cloths 😆

JoborPlay · 06/10/2021 21:18

I sort my washing it to darks and whites. Tea towels, underwear, reusable wipes, towels, bedding and clothes go in together in the appropriate colour group. And usually at 40. No one's died yet!

JoborPlay · 06/10/2021 21:20

dementedpixie my tea towels are used for all sorts. Pretty much anything BUT dry pots as we have a dishwasher.

tempchecked · 06/10/2021 21:24

Move on folks, and maybe try to split the atom or something worthwhile.

Women do make a rod for their own backs sometimes.

I've only got a 1400 spin.

To be fair, men mither over mundane bollocks as well.

But qould you use paper towel or tea towel to wipe the mes left after? Well whatever is left to wipe
JulesJules · 06/10/2021 21:35

I wash them at 60 with towels. (30 or 40 just not hot enough) They get ironed too, they won't fit in the drawer otherwise

Bounce55 · 06/10/2021 21:36

My tea towels/wash cloths/flannels/towels all go in together on a 90 wash

Moraxella · 06/10/2021 21:36

There’s loads of research about what bugs have been grown from tea towels

“Of the 49 samples that tested positive, 36.7 percent grew coliform bacteria, 36.7 percent grew Enterococcus, and 14.3 percent grew Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus).”

🤤🤤🤤… but mine still go in with the other washing

TheKeatingFive · 06/10/2021 21:37

I put them in with everything else.

No one's died yet. Hurray.

But I'm constantly amazed that I'm still around, what with how risky my behaviour is by MN standards.
