Washing teatowels

Sorry for the boring thread.

AIBU to think it's fine to bung teatowels in with the normal washing at 40° if they're not actually soiled?
DH seems to think we should do a separate wash for teatowels and I think that's overkill when they've just been used in a normal fashion to dry stuff for a few days.

I wash mine with the bath towels at 60 degrees - not because I think the tea towels themselves are particularly dirty, but to kill off any bacteria they may acquire during the laundering process (poo particles from the bathtowels etc). Once the tea towels have dried, I iron them before use so I reckon they're virtually sterile by then.

FangsForTheMemory · 06/10/2021 19:08

I do all towelsand bedding at 60 or 90.

BordelDeMerde · 06/10/2021 19:09

@SickAndTiredAgain

I throw them in with other stuff at 30. We have a dishwasher so they are used very occasionally to dry something that has just been washed. How dirty can they be?
Well, that's how I feel. Dh piles all the dirty ones up until there's enough for a load. But then you (we) have a load of dirty teatowels just hanging around and one (I) never know if a particular one is dirty or clean.

If you're using bio powder / pod / liquid and a washing machine that does what it's supposed to, I'm with you.
(I haven't killed anyone, or even made them ill, yet.)

Mol1628 · 06/10/2021 19:10

I just stick them in with anything at 40. I don’t use fabric conditioner anyway.

Everything in the wash is cleaned by the detergent so it never worries me mixing with underwear etc.

mumwon · 06/10/2021 19:12

wash with whatever colour they are & than if its not throwing down dry on line

speakout · 06/10/2021 19:17

I wash at 40 degrees. I use a ton of tea towels- 3 or 4 a day on a heavy cooking day. I use cotton cloths for worktops too- usually 2 or 3 clean ones a day.
They are simpy soiled with food- I can;t see the issue- not used to wipe up dog shit or anything- usually just gravy spills or food stains- so not full of microbes.
But I line dry anyway- wind and UV light kills any bugs.

Thewiseoneincognito · 06/10/2021 19:21

God no they go separately.

HHSchultz · 06/10/2021 19:24

It's not that the tea towels are dirty, it's the rest of the laundry to consider.
Unless you use a biological powder, I don't think liquid or capsules work the same you don't kill bacteria. I think the temperature needs to be above 40 to.

60 degrees with towels or bedding.

Livpool · 06/10/2021 19:27

I throw them in with everything else at 40 degrees

PolytheneRam · 06/10/2021 19:28

Normal wash. And I certainly don't iron them.

SylvanasWindrunner · 06/10/2021 19:29

I just stick them in with everything. I don't separate washing at all, really. It just all gets bunged in!

Livpool · 06/10/2021 19:30

I'm with you - I just separate whites from everything else

If you’re washing at 30 - that’s not hot enough to kill bacteria. If you don’t dry quickly they’ll stink.

They’re line dried outside like everything else.
1forAll74 · 06/10/2021 19:31

Wash with everything else. why would you need to wash separately. One of my cats came in with wet fur the other day, so rubbed him down with a fresh dry tea towel that was handy nearby, then wiped some dishes with it, as forgot to get another tea towel out, the towel will go in the wash soon, with all the other stuff.

purplesequins · 06/10/2021 19:32

so your dh wants to do laundry for the whole family?
let him crack on with it then.

Sunshineandflipflops · 06/10/2021 19:33

On with general other stuff here at 40 degrees. If it’s good enough for my running kit and undies then it’s good enough for tea towels that are only lightly used.

On threads like this I always feel like I have some of the lowest standards, and I stand by them. But even I would draw the line at this Shock

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE DREADED POO PARTICLES? THEY ARE EVERYWHERE. Grin
Chloemol · 06/10/2021 19:37

They go in with everything else, they have been used to dry clean pots and pans!

traintraveller · 06/10/2021 19:39

Mine go in with towels and Cloths at 60
